Adduction induces large optic nerve head deformations in subjects with normal-tension glaucoma
Conclusion We found that NTG subjects experienced higher strains due to adduction than HTG subjects, while HTG subjects experienced higher strain due to IOP elevation than NTG subjects—and that these differences were most pronounced in the LC tissue. (Source: British Journal of Ophthalmology)

Crystalline lens nuclear age prediction as a new biomarker of nucleus degeneration
Background The crystalline lens is a transparent structure of the eye to focus light on the retina. It becomes muddy, hard and dense with increasing age, which makes the crystalline lens gradually lose its function. We aim to develop a nuclear age predictor to reflect the degeneration of the crystalline lens nucleus. Methods First we trained and internally validated the nuclear age predictor with a deep-learning algorithm, using 12 904 anterior segment optical coherence tomography (AS-OCT) images from four diverse Asian and American cohorts: Zhongshan Ophthalmic Center with Machine0 (ZOM0), Tomey Corporation (TOMEY), Univ...

Stargardt macular dystrophy and therapeutic approaches
Stargardt macular dystrophy (Stargardt disease; STGD1; OMIM 248200) is the most prevalent inherited macular dystrophy. STGD1 is an autosomal recessive disorder caused by multiple pathogenic sequence variants in the large ABCA4 gene (OMIM 601691). Major advances in understanding both the clinical and molecular features, as well as the underlying pathophysiology, have culminated in many completed, ongoing and planned human clinical trials of novel therapies. The aims of this concise review are to describe (1) the detailed phenotypic and genotypic characteristics of the disease, multimodal imaging findings, natural history of...

Pan-Indian multicentre retrospective study of 0.01% atropine for myopia control
The recent publication by Rohit et al evaluated the efficacy of 0.01% atropine in controlling myopia progression among Indian children over a 2-year period.1 A total of 732 myopic children aged 6–14 years from 20 centres were included, and all received 0.01% atropine eye-drops once daily. The authors found that, during the first year, there was a relative reduction of 64% in myopia progression, and during the second year, the efficacy was 11% more, as compared with the first year. Furthermore, individual treatment response was found to be associated with age and initial myopia severity, with a weaker effect in younge...

At a glance
Characterisation of ectasia after penetrating keratoplasty in keratoconus eyes using anterior-segment optical coherence tomography (see page 506) Optical coherence tomography can be used to image corneal ectasia which occurs late following penetrating keratoplasty. Corneas with late post-keratoplasty ectasia have a deeper anterior chamber, steeper graft-host interface angle, and lower thickness at the interface Crystalline lens nuclear age prediction as a new biomarker of nucleus degeneration (see page 513) A deep learning algorithm was developed to predict nuclear age, which provides insight into the premature ageing of t...

Self-reported dual sensory impairment and related factors: a European population-based cross-sectional survey
Conclusion There are important differences in terms of prevalence of DSI in Europe, depending on socioeconomic and medical factors. Prevention of DSI does represent an important challenge for maintaining quality of life in elderly population. (Source: British Journal of Ophthalmology)

Incidence of and risk factors for suspected and definitive glaucoma after bilateral congenital cataract surgery: a 5-year follow-up
Conclusions Identifying suspected and definitive glaucoma after bilateral CC surgery can lower the risk of secondary blindness in children. Patients with related risk factors need to pay more attention and thus reach early intervention and treatment during clinical practice. Primary IOL implantation may be a potential protective factor, need more clinical trials to be verified. Trial registration number NCT04342052. (Source: British Journal of Ophthalmology)

Orbital and periocular complications in patients with sinonasal tumours with orbital invasion
Conclusion Majority of patients with sinonasal tumours and secondary orbital invasion were managed with eye-sparing multidisciplinary treatments. Preservation of the eye can lead to reasonably good functional outcome despite expected orbital and periocular complications. (Source: British Journal of Ophthalmology)

Impact of tumour volume and treatment delay on the outcome after linear accelerator-based fractionated stereotactic radiosurgery of uveal melanoma
Conclusion LINAC-based fSRS with static conformal beams combined with dynamic conformal arcs and discrete intensity-modulated radiotherapy results in a high tumour control rate. The tumour volume is the most robust physical prognostic marker for local control and disease progression. Avoiding treatment delay improves outcomes. (Source: British Journal of Ophthalmology)

Correlating somatic copy number alteration in aqueous humour cfDNA with chemotherapy history, eye salvage and pathological features in retinoblastoma
This study determined to probe the potential association between somatic copy number alteration (SCNA) in retinoblastoma (RB) aqueous humour (AH) and pathological high-risk factors, clinical features and previous chemotherapy history. Methods Single-centre retrospective cohort study from including 58 AH samples collected from 58 patients diagnosed. Among them, 41 samples were collected after enucleation and 17 samples were collected before intravitreal chemotherapy. SCNAs were accessed by conducting shallow whole-genome sequencing in cell-free (cf) DNA of AH. HRs and ORs were applied to measure risk factors. Results Canon...
