Association of SIX1-SIX6 polymorphisms with peripapillary retinal nerve fibre layer thickness in children
Conclusions Both rs33912345 and rs10483727 at SIX1-SIX6 were associated with p-RNFL thickness in children, especially at the temporal-inferior sector, with age-dependent and sex-specific effects. SNP rs12436579 was associated with nasal-inferior p-RNFL thickness. Our findings suggested a role of SIX1-SIX6 in RNFL variation during neural retina development in childhood. Human intrinsic choroidal neurons do not alter the expression of intrinsic markers in response to pressure
Conclusion In this functional analysis of human ICN in vitro, higher amounts of VIP and NOS1 mRNA were detected in the temporal choroid, that is, the choroidal site with ICN accumulation. Further, our data indicate that elevated pressure is apparently not able to trigger ICN responses via the investigated markers. Alternative markers and stimuli need to be investigated in upcoming studies in order to unravel ICN function. (Source: British Journal of Ophthalmology)

Abnormal foveal morphology in carriers of oculocutaneous albinism
Conclusion We have, for the first time, identified foveal abnormalities in OCA carriers. This provides clinical value, particularly in cases where limited phenotype data are available. Our findings raise the possibility that previously reported mild cases of foveal hypoplasia or isolated foveal hypoplasia could correspond to OCA carrier status. Utilisation of composite endpoint outcome to assess efficacy of tocilizumab for non-infectious uveitis in the STOP-Uveitis Study
Conclusions Both doses of intravenous TCZ were effective in either improving or maintaining stability in patients using the composite endpoint scoring system. A composite scoring system as used in this study may be a better measure to assess efficacy outcomes as compared with only vitreous haze or other single outcome measures. Incidence, causes and risk factors of vision loss in rural Southern China: 6-year follow-up of the Yangxi Eye Study
Conclusions Substantial work is still required to reduce avoidable vision loss in rural China. Screening outreach and efforts to improve awareness which target the poorer and less educated are urgently needed to reduce the growing unmet need for eye care due to ageing. Barriers to uptake of referral eye care services among the elderly in residential care: the Hyderabad Ocular Morbidity in Elderly Study (HOMES)
Conclusions The uptake of eye care services in the elderly in residential care remains poor despite the provision of services for free. Lack of felt need for services is the main reason for non-compliance to the referral for care. Counselling on the benefit of interventions could potentially improve referral compliance in this population. (Source: British Journal of Ophthalmology)

Prevalence and causes of visual impairment and blindness in Lao Peoples Democratic Republic: the Vientiane Eye Study
Conclusions Visual impairment and blindness remain major public health problems in Lao PDR. There is an ongoing need to fund ophthalmic care resources and community education programmes to improve access to healthcare in this region. (Source: British Journal of Ophthalmology)

Quantitative evaluation of retinal and choroidal vascularity and retrobulbar blood flow in patients with myopic anisometropia by CDI and OCTA
Conclusion Retinal microvascular density, choroidal vascularity and retrobulbar blood flow were simultaneously lower in adult myopic anisomyopes with more myopic eyes and disturbed choroid circulation was related to the severity of myopia. Further longitudinal study was helped to identify the effect of choroidal parameters for myopic progression. (Source: British Journal of Ophthalmology)

Change of peripapillary retinal nerve fiber layer and choroidal thickness during 4-year myopic progress: Boramae Myopia Cohort Study Report 4
Conclusions The peripapillary RNFL and choroidal thicknesses as well as the locations of the RNFL peaks had been preserved, during the 4-year follow-up on myopic children, when traced and measured from the same location. (Source: British Journal of Ophthalmology)

Retinal nerve fibre layer thickness measured with SD-OCT in a population-based study: the Handan Eye Study
Conclusions In non-glaucoma individuals, this difference of RNFL thickness in Chinese population should be noted in making disease diagnoses. Meanwhile, multiple ocular and systemic factors are closely related to the thickness of RNFL. Our findings further emphasise the need to demonstrate ethnic differences in RNFL thickness and the specificity of associated ocular and systemic factors, as well as to develop better normative databases worldwide. Trial registration number HES was registered in Chinese Clinical Trial Registry website, and the registry number was ChiCTR-EOC-17013214. (Source: British Journal of Ophthalmology)

NDP-related retinopathies: clinical phenotype of female carriers
Conclusion Although NDP-related retinopathy is an X-linked recessive disorder, most of the female carriers of NDP exhibited clinical features of FEVR. Thus, timely examinations and lifelong monitoring should be conducted in the NDP female carriers. (Source: British Journal of Ophthalmology)

Disease-specific assessment of Vision Impairment in Low Luminance in age-related macular degeneration - a MACUSTAR study report
Conclusion The VILL is a psychometrically sound patient-reported outcome instrument, and the results further support its reliability and validity across all AMD stages. We recommend the shortened version of the questionnaire with three subscales (VILL-33) for future use. Trial registration number NCT03349801. (Source: British Journal of Ophthalmology)

Validation of DIGIROP models and decision support tool for prediction of treatment for retinopathy of prematurity on a contemporary Swedish cohort
Conclusions DIGIROP-Birth and DIGIROP-Screen showed high predictive ability in a contemporary Swedish cohort. At birth, 50% of the infants born at 24 to <31 weeks of gestation were predicted to have low risk of severe ROP and could potentially be released from ROP screening examinations. All routinely screened treated infants, excluding those screened for clinical indications of severe illness, were correctly flagged as needing ROP screening. Ocular geometry in adults born extremely, very and moderately preterm with and without retinopathy of prematurity: results from the Gutenberg Prematurity Eye Study
Conclusion Our analyses in adults demonstrate that the corneal morphology is influenced by GA and BW percentile, while the anterior chamber depth and lens thickness are affected by ROP treatment, namely laser therapy and cryotherapy. The present study highlights that perinatal factors lead to lifelong sequelae of ocular shape. (Source: British Journal of Ophthalmology)
