Prevalence of carpal tunnel syndrome symptoms among dentists working in Riyadh
CONCLUSION:Thirty percent of dentists working in Riyadh had experienced severe or mild symptoms related to CTS. Several risk fac.tors for CTS have been identified. Future research could explore the reasons behind these risk factors to identify and implement prevention measures. LIMITATIONS:Cannot be generalized to the whole of Saudi Arabia, or the region. Larger controlled studies are needed to further identify the risk factors associated with CTS among dentists. In addition, since the BCTQ was used, the self-reporting nature of the study might be affected by external bias.  CONFLICT OF INTEREST: None. ...

Survival after cardiopulmonary arrest in a tertiary care hospital in Turkey
CONCLUSION:Assessing patients at risk in the hospital for comorbid conditions by CCI would be beneficial to prevent deaths related to IHCA. Close monitoring of patients with high CCI scores is advisable, as is making IHCA calls on time.  LIMITATIONS:Retrospective, small sample size, and no evaluation of the neurological condition of the discharged patients.  CONFLICT OF INTEREST:None.   (Source: Annals of Saudi Medicine)

Quality of life among elderly residents in the Gaza Strip: a community-based study
CONCLUSION: More years of education and higher satisfaction with health were associated with a better perception of QoL. Interventions should be focused more on physical and environmental aspects in the life of elderly persons.  LIMITATIONS: Cross-sectional design, use of convenience sample and some possibly important factors not studied. CONFLICT OF INTEREST:None.    (Source: Annals of Saudi Medicine)

Neurological disability among adults following traumatic spinal fractures in Saudi Arabia: a retrospective single-center medical record review
CONCLUSION:A high proportion of neurological disability following TSF was found. Further studies should attempt to improve the docu.mentation rate of seatbelt status in all traumatic cases including mild injuries. This data will increase our understanding of adult TSF and possibly facilitate injury prevention strategies. LIMITATIONS:Single hospital and may not be generalizable. CONFLICT OF INTEREST:None.    (Source: Annals of Saudi Medicine)

Influence of individual and family factors on physical activity among Saudi girls: a cross-sectional study
CONCLUSIONS:The findings reiterate the significance of improving the PA of school girls and the critical role of the family in improving chil.dren’s PA. Multisectoral coordination between schools, health agencies, families, and other concerned agencies to plan and implement interventions should help increase the PA of school girls. LIMITATIONS: The use of self-report may have introduced some levels of social desirability bias. The study was only conducted in a single city. CONFLICT OF INTEREST: None.   (Source: Annals of Saudi Medicine)

Pattern of skin diseases in a university hospital in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia: age and sex distribution
CONCLUSIONS: There are slight differences in the prevalence of dermatological diseases in Jeddah, as shown in this study and other studies from other regions in Saudi Arabia and the Middle East. We recommend initiating awareness campaigns to increase knowledge about skin diseases, particularly in men, and improving dermatology-related training programs for primary health care physicians. A population-based study is warranted to clarify the prevalence of skin diseases in Saudi Arabia.  LIMITATIONS: The inclusion of patients who visited the dermatology clinic only in 2017 and data collection from only registration ...

Survival and metastasis in muscle-invasive bladder cancer patients who present with indeterminate pulmonary nodules before treatment
CONCLUSION:The presence of IPNs, especially nodules>1 cm had a negative effect on disease-free survival. Tailored postoperative follow-up of these patients may impact disease outcomes. LIMITATIONS:The retrospective nature, the lack of standardized preoperative imaging protocols, the lack of a central radiology review and the small number of patients. CONFLICT OF INTEREST: None.    (Source: Annals of Saudi Medicine)

Perceived stress and coping strategies among ICU nurses in government tertiary hospitals in Saudi Arabia: a cross-sectional study
CONCLUSION:The additional knowledge that behavioral disengagement and blaming aggravate stress can serve as the basis in formulating work-related stress reduction strategies among nurses caring for critical patients. LIMITATIONS: The use of self-reports, convenience sampling, and selected demographic factors may have limited the scope and generalizability of the findings and induced social desirability bias. CONFLICT OF INTEREST:None.    (Source: Annals of Saudi Medicine)

D-penicillamine-induced pseudo-pseudoxanthoma elasticum and extensive elastosis perforans serpiginosa with excellent response to acitretin
We report a case of DPA-induced pseudo-PXE with extensive EPS who had an excellent rapid response to acitretin. To the best of our knowledge no such report has been published in the past, even though there is a single report of effectiveness of isotretinoin in elastosis perforans serpiginosa. SIMILAR CASES PUBLISHED: One similar case but with a different medication (reference 13).   (Source: Annals of Saudi Medicine)

Factors associated with perceptions of child sexual abuse and lack of parental knowledge: a community-based cross-sectional study from the Eastern Province of Saudi Arabia
CONCLUSIONS: Risk factors for parental lack of knowledge and poor perception associated with CSA are poverty and low education. Protective factors included the older parent age, size of the family and families with more than one wife. Education should be designed for parents and the community to increase the knowledge and perception of CSA. LIMITATIONS:Single-center study and short study period. CONFLICT OF INTEREST:None.   (Source: Annals of Saudi Medicine)

The Arabic version of the Kogan Attitudes toward Older People Scale among Saudi nursing students: a psychometric analysis

Seroprevalence of Zika virus among asymptomatic pregnant mothers and their newborns in the Najran region of southwest Saudi Arabia
CONCLUSION:Although previous (resolved) ZIKV infection and cross-reactivity of the ELISA method with other flaviviruses cannot be ex.cluded, the study found no confirmed cases of acute ZIKV infection. However, given the presence of the vector in Saudi Arabia, the presence of presumptive positive serology and the ongoing risk of ZIKV entry via a regular influx of travelers from endemic areas, we propose that continuous surveillance be conducted for ZIKV as well for other flaviviruses. Larger-scale nationwide studies are strongly recommended to gain a broader view of the potential threat from ZIKV in the country. LIMITA...

Persistence of hepatitis B surface antibody and immune memory to hepatitis B vaccine among medical college students in Madinah
CONCLUSION: A considerable portion of the participants (about 51%) were at risk of HBV infection since their anti-HBs levels were<10 mIU/mL. Booster doses significantly trigger memory immune response and this ensured their protection against the virus. Pre-booster anti-HBs level are a good predictive of post-booster anti-HBs levels in≥10 mIU/mL group. LIMITATIONS:The sample size was small. Shortage of collaborators. CONFLICT OF INTEREST: None.    (Source: Annals of Saudi Medicine)
