What a pain in the … back: a review of current treatment options with a focus on naproxen sodium
J Pharm Pharm Sci. 2024 Feb 7;27:12384. doi: 10.3389/jpps.2024.12384. eCollection 2024.ABSTRACTNon-specific low back pain (LBP) represents a challenging and prevalent condition that is one of the most common symptoms leading to primary care physician visits. While established guidelines recommend prioritizing non-pharmacological approaches as the primary course of action, pharmacological treatments are advised when non-pharmacological approaches are ineffective or based on patient preference. These guidelines recommend non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) or skeletal muscle relaxers (SMRs) as the first-line pharm...

Gelatin/O-carboxymethyl chitosan injectable self-healing hydrogels for ibuprofen and naproxen dual release
Int J Biol Macromol. 2024 Feb 16:130266. doi: 10.1016/j.ijbiomac.2024.130266. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTRecently, a significantly greater clinical benefit has been reported with a combination of glucosamine sulfate and nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) compared to either treatment alone for the growing osteoarthritis (OA) disease. So, this study introduces hydrogels using O-carboxymethyl chitosan (O-CMC, structurally akin glucosamine glycan), and Gelatin type A (GA) in a 1:2 ratio with β-glycerophosphate (βGPh) at varying percentages (5 %, 12.5 %, and 15 %). We show that hydrogel properties, adaptable for...

Evaluating an integrated nano zero-valent iron column system for emerging contaminants removal from different wastewater matrices - Identification of transformation products
In this study, the performance of a column system consisting of zero-valent iron nanoparticles (nZVI) incorporated into a cationic resin and synthesized from green tea extract with the addition of persulfate for the elimination of selected pharmaceuticals and endocrine disruptors from wastewater is evaluated. Ibuprofen, naproxen, diclofenac and ketoprofen were the target pharmaceuticals from non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs group, while bisphenol A was the target endocrine disruptor. In this context, different real wastewater effluent matrices were investigated: anaerobic membrane bioreactor (AnMBR), upflow anaerobic ...

Using synchrotron high-resolution powder X-ray diffraction for the structure determination of a new cocrystal formed by two active principle ingredients
The crystal structure of a new 1:1 cocrystal of carbamazepine and S-naproxen (C15H12N2O · C14H14O3) was solved from powder X-ray diffraction (PXRD). The PXRD pattern was measured at the high-resolution beamline CRISTAL at synchrotron SOLEIL (France). The structure was solved using Monte Carlo simulated annealing, then refined with Rietveld refinement. The positions of the H atoms were obtained from density functional theory (DFT) ground-state calculations. The symmetry is orthorhombic with the space group P212121 (No. 19) and the following lattice parameters: a = 33.5486   (9), b = 26.4223   (6), c = 5.3651   (10) â...

Molecules, Vol. 29, Pages 380: Dendrimer Coated Silica as a Sorbent for Dispersive Solid-Phase Extraction of Select Non-Steroidal Anti-Inflammatory Drugs from Water
ki Non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) have been recognized as a potentially serious threat to the natural environment. NSAIDs are popular painkillers, and the main pathway for them to reach natural water is via discharge from wastewater and sewage treatment plants. In order to monitor contamination caused by these drugs, as well as their impact on the environment, a new material based on Silica Gel 60, functionalized with a dendrimeric copolymer of methylamine and 1,4-butanediol diglycidyl ether (named MA-BDDE), was prepared. Initial physicochemical characterization of the MA-BDDE material was carried out u...

The effectiveness of interventions in reducing pain related to orthodontic separation: a systematic review and meta-analysis
CONCLUSIONS: The application of LLLT decreased the pain induced by the separation during the first day of teeth separation; the pain reduction showed an increase from 6 h to the end of the 24 h. However, the evidence is weak to moderate. The analgesics reduced the pain compared to placebo; this pain reduction had shown an increase from 6 h to the end of the 24 h. The strength of the evidence is moderate. Naproxen gel effectively reduced the pain compared to placebo; the evidence in this regard is moderate. Naproxen gel effectively reduced the pain compared to placebo, but it was less effective than the oral intake of non-s...

Molecules, Vol. 29, Pages 96: Simultaneous Determination of Steroids and NSAIDs, Using DLLME-SFO Extraction and HPLC Analysis, in Milk and Eggs Collected from Rural Roma Communities in Transylvania, Romania
eldean-Galea This research aims to determine five steroids and four non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs in milk and egg samples collected from rural Roma communities in Transylvania, Romania. Target compounds were extracted from selected matrices by protein precipitation, followed by extract purification by dispersive liquid–liquid microextraction based on solidification of floating organic droplets. The extraction procedure was optimized using a 24 full factorial experimental design. Good enrichment factors (87.64–122.07 milk; 26.97–38.72 eggs), extraction recovery (74.49&am...

Analgesic onset and efficacy of a fast-acting formulation of acetaminophen in a postoperative dental impaction pain model
CONCLUSIONS: Both studies suggested FA-acetaminophen had faster onset of action compared to ES-acetaminophen and LG-Ibuprofen. In light of the difference in TCPR and TMPR results between Study 1 and 2, an additional study is needed to further investigate time to analgesic onset of FA-acetaminophen compared with ES-acetaminophen and LG-Ibuprofen.STUDY REGISTRY NUMBERS: Study 1: NCT02735122; Study 2: NCT03224403.PMID:38124555 | DOI:10.1080/03007995.2023.2294946 (Source: Current Medical Research and Opinion)
