Child abuse or non-accidental trauma is a clinical diagnosis. It is the constellation of history, physical examination, radiographic evaluation, laboratory testing and investigation that determines if child abuse has occurred. Irritability caused by fractures or other trauma can be a presenting symptom of abuse. Fractures can be a presentation but they are also common problems not associated with abuse. (CNN) — Nonpowder firearms like BB and paintball guns aren’t typically considered lethal weapons. But as the rate of eye injuries linked to these weapons surges, researchers say it’s time to take these types of guns seriously, too.
Between 1990 and 2016, the overall rate of injuries from nonpowder firearms among children declined more than 54%. But the rate of eye injuries, often severe, jumped more than 30%, according to a new study published in Pediatrics.

3D-printed corneas could save millions ’ vision

British scientists have 3D printed the first human corneas, yielding a potential fix to the worldwide shortage of corneas for implantation.
The Newcastle University researchers created a bio-ink using stem cells from a healthy donor cornea mixed with alginate and collagen. They used a simple, low-cost 3D bio-printer to extrude the bio-ink in concentric circles to form the shape of a human cornea. It took less than 10 minutes to print.
