Gut microbiota and female health
World J Gastroenterol. 2024 Mar 28;30(12):1655-1662. doi: 10.3748/wjg.v30.i12.1655.ABSTRACTThe gut microbiota is recognized as an endocrine organ with the capacity to influence distant organs and associated biological pathways. Recent advancements underscore the critical role of gut microbial homeostasis in female health; with dysbiosis potentially leading to diseases among women such as polycystic ovarian syndrome, endometriosis, breast cancer, cervical cancer, and ovarian cancer etc. Despite this, there has been limited discussion on the underlying mechanisms. This editorial explores the three potential mechanisms throug...

Myocardial metastasis from ZEB1- and TWIST-positive spindle cell carcinoma of the esophagus: A case report
CONCLUSION: To the best of our knowledge, there have been no prior reports of cardiac metastasis of esophageal SCC. This case highlights our experience with a patient with esophageal SCC who progressed rapidly and died from the disease, with the autopsy examination showing cardiac metastasis.PMID:38617457 | PMC:PMC11008411 | DOI:10.3748/wjg.v30.i11.1636 (Source: World Journal of Gastroenterology : WJG)

Socioeconomic inequalities  in cancer incidence and mortality: An analysis of GLOBOCAN 2022
CONCLUSIONS: Infection- and poverty-related cancer burdens are offset by increased prostate, breast, colorectal, and lung cancer incidence associated with rapid societal and economic transitions. Cancer incidence and mortality patterns in China feature characteristics of developed and developing countries, necessitating tailored, evidence-based, and comprehensive strategies for effective cancer prevention and control.PMID:38616547 | DOI:10.1097/CM9.0000000000003140 (Source: Chinese Medical Journal)

Systemic Therapy Advances for HER2-Positive and Triple Negative Breast Cancer: What the Surgeon Needs to Know
Clin Breast Cancer. 2024 Mar 13:S1526-8209(24)00077-6. doi: 10.1016/j.clbc.2024.03.004. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTNeoadjuvant systemic therapy (NST) was initially reserved for unresectable patients however it has been increasingly used to facilitate breast conservation, downstage the axilla, and inform adjuvant therapy decisions based on response. For patients with HER2+ and triple-negative breast cancer (TNBC), clinical trials have resulted in the ability to individualize treatment regimens. For HER2+ breast cancer, de-escalation of neoadjuvant regimens to minimize cytotoxic chemotherapy and de-escalation or escalatio...

Genetic predisposition in chemotherapy ‐induced cardiomyopathy in a 65‐year‐old female with metastatic breast cancer
We present a case of a 65-year-old woman with breast cancer who developed recurrent CTRCD following low-dose chemotherapy, despite lacking conventional cardiovascular risk factors. Her medical history included anthracycline-associated cardiomyopathy, and her condition deteriorated significantly after treatment with HER2-targeted therapies. Through the use of multimodal imaging, we detected severe left ventricular systolic dysfunction. Further investigation with genetic testing revealed a likely pathogenic variant in theTNNT2 gene, suggesting a genetic predisposition to CTRCD. This case implies the potential role of genetic...

Toxicity evaluation of dose-escalation in hypofractionated regional nodal irradiation for breast cancer: a retrospective study
Regional nodal irradiation (RNI) to the axilla and supraclavicular area presents distinct toxicities, such as lymphedema and shoulder stiffness, compared to whole-breast irradiation. There is insufficient evidence on the safety of dose-escalation in hypofractionated RNI. We aimed to evaluate and compare toxicity rates in patients with breast cancer who received hypofractionated RNI with and without dose-escalation. A historical and palaeopathological perspective on cancer.
Cancer is often wrongly considered to be a modern disease in many popular medical venues. Cancers have been known to mankind since ancient times. In fact, its antiquity can be proved through the application of palaeopathological methodologies. The present perspective piece demonstrates by means of a historical and palaeopathological analysis how oncological manifestations were present long before the emergence anatomically modern humans and addresses the epidemiological transition from ancient times to the contemporary world. The final section of the article is dedicated to the analysis of breast cancer and its identificatio...
