How does transportation work?
Hey ya'll. So I've been living in Manhattan for the past year. I don't have a car. No one does here. Public transit is awesome. Anyway, I will be attending medical school in a suburban/ruralish city where public transit isn't as accessible and you pretty much need a car to get to campus and grocery shop. My question for you all is, if you were in a similar situation, how did you get a car and work things out? Do you rent a car for the first month until you buy one? Do you taxi everywhere... Health Insurance Coverage
Short and to the point: Does HPSP cover medical insurance if required by your school? In my case, the university requires all dental students to either buy into their insurance or have proof of a third party supplier -- either way, you must have it (in other words, you must pay for it). No underserved experiences?
Hi SDN, I am a first-gen in CA who is planning on applying to med school this year. 3.73/3.66 GPA, 515 MCAT, 1000 hrs of research, 900 hrs of scribing, 50 hrs tutoring, 120 hrs volunteering at diabetes center, president of a health organization, 3 great letters of recs The only thing I'm concerned about is my lack of work with the underserved community. I am the first one in my family to pursue a health-related career and I didn't know this was important until I started lurking SDN.... No underserved experiences? (Source: Student Doctor Network)

Listing Depression on school health forms?
Should I list depression on a school health form? I am starting medical school in the fall and my school asks about what medications I am currently on (antidepressants) and several other questions including if I am or have I ever been depressed. My concern is who has access to this. Are teachers/administrators going to see this? Are the doctors I rotate with going to see this? But I am also not sure about the implications of leaving it off the form, i.e. lying (Source: Student Doctor Network)

Moonlighting before PD's okay
I was getting my pre-employment health screening the other day before starting my internship, and was offered some urgent care shifts by the doc running the pre-employment health screening. I told him my program doesn't allow us to moonlight until year-III, and his response was, "everyone does it anyways." My gut inclination is to turn this (and other moonlighting opportunities down), and to play it above board especially as a new intern. What are peoples thoughts on this? Do people... Any advice for my predicament?
I apologize in advance if this is in the wrong place, I am new to SDN/have never posted before. I will be a senior in the fall at a highly ranked public university. My major is a combination of psychology and biology. My first two years at the university, I felt like I didn't belong (I felt stupid) which led to low self esteem, low self confidence and severe depression. Looking back, I also realize I did not know how to study AT ALL. I have tired to greatly improve my study habits, and work... Any advice for my predicament? (Source: Student Doctor Network)

Question regarding "Substituting creative/passionate EC for research"
Hey everyone - new poster here but I just had a couple questions about things I heard about and I wanted to here if anybody here had opinions on it. A couple months ago I went to a Health Professions School fair at my undergrad and I spoke with the Dean of Admissions of a top 15 med school. She was talking about how performing research is important in showing creativity/drive/curiosity and that it is highly regarded, but she also said that if an applicant doesn't have much formal research... New to SDN (sorta) and kinda sinking
Hi! A little bit about my situation. Education: I've completed a total of 39 hours at a community college and will be done with my basics. I've spent a semester at a major public university in Texas and I had to leave due to financial issues. I need to retake two classes there Volunteering: I've had probably a total of MAYBE 100 hours at a local hospital on the Mother and Baby floor. (I have no idea why they didn't rotate me. "Fit" for pre-doctoral internship
So, as I am reviewing APPIC pre-doctoral internship sites I was wondering how "fit" is viewed from those who are reviewing applications. I am specifically looking to work in a medical setting (various specialities) and interested in burn injuries. I have been gaining experiences in medical settings over the summer but wondering if that is enough (with a medical related dissertation, medical background in GI nursing and anesthesia) to be a good fit to some of the Academic Health...
