Infectious mononucleosis: new concepts in clinical presentation, epidemiology, and host response
Curr Opin Infect Dis. 2024 Mar 27. doi: 10.1097/QCO.0000000000001012. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTPURPOSE OF THE REVIEW: Infectious mononucleosis (IM) is an infectious disease that presents clinically in only a small percentage of individuals despite almost universal infection with the causative agent. Here, we review the latest concepts in the clinical presentation, epidemiology, and host response of this disease.RECENT FINDINGS: Several recently published papers/reviews describe IM as a condition caused by one of several etiologic agents including, cytomegalovirus (HHV-5), Roseola virus (HHV-6) and Toxoplasmosis amongs...

A case of Stevens-Johnson syndrome treated with oral cyclosporine
J Family Med Prim Care. 2023 Dec;12(12):3425-3428. doi: 10.4103/jfmpc.jfmpc_1162_23. Epub 2023 Dec 21.ABSTRACTStevens-Johnson syndrome (SJS) and toxic epidermal necrolysis (TEN) can occur at any age and are commonly caused by adverse drug events. Rapid diagnosis of SJS/TEN is imperative, followed by immediate cessation of offending agent and induction of appropriate treatment. Cyclosporine, a calcineurin inhibitor, has been reported to have a promising therapeutic effect in SJS/TEN patients with few side effects. Diagnosis of SJS/TEN in children is especially challenging as many of the symptoms mimic that of an upper respi...

Clinical and Laboratory Diagnosis of Exanthems Among Japanese Children Younger Than 6 Years Old in the Post-Measles-Rubella Vaccine Era
CONCLUSIONS: The most common causes of pediatric exanthems were noninfectious diseases and viral exanthema. PCR assay was instrumental for etiological diagnosis of nonspecific exanthems.PMID:37963264 | DOI:10.1097/INF.0000000000004175 (Source: Herpes)

Worldwide Evolution of Vaccinable and Nonvaccinable Viral Skin Infections: Google Trends Analysis
CONCLUSIONS: Harnessing data generated by web searches may increase the efficacy of traditional surveillance systems and strengthens the suspicion that the incidence of some vaccinable viral skin infections such as varicella, measles, and rubella may be globally increasing, whereas the incidence of common nonvaccinable skin infections remains stable.PMID:37632891 | DOI:10.2196/35034 (Source: Herpes)

Case report: Acute liver failure in children and the human herpes virus 6-? A factor in the recent epidemic
We report on the historic cases of three female infants who had suspected primary HHV-6B infection, acute hepatitis and rapid progression to acute liver failure (ALF) requiring LT. Appearances of their native liver were identical to those described in children in the recent hepatitis epidemic. Deteriorating clinical trajectories of recurrent graft hepatitis and rejection-like episodes followed and all three succumbed to graft failure with HHV-6B detected posthumously in their liver allografts. Our case series and the serious complications observed with the recent rise in common childhood infections is a reminder that these...

< em > Microvirga roseola < /em > sp. nov. and < em > Microvirga lenta < /em > sp. nov., isolated from Taklamakan Desert soil
Int J Syst Evol Microbiol. 2022 Jun;72(6). doi: 10.1099/ijsem.0.005409.ABSTRACTTwo Gram-negative, rod-shaped, non-spore-forming bacteria, designated SM9T and SM2T, were isolated from Taklamakan Desert soil samples. Phylogenetic analysis based on the 16S rRNA gene sequences showed that strains SM9T and SM2T had the highest sequence similarity to the type strains Microvirga indica BCRC 80972T and Microvirga soli NBRC 112417T with similarity values of 98.2 and 97.7 %, respectively, and Microvirga was among the predominant genera in the desert soil. The draft genomes of these two strains were 4.56 Mbp (SM9T) and 5.08 Mbp (SM2T...
