Is Charlotte Tilbury Multi-miracle cream really worth it? Jo asks…I love Charlotte Tilbury’s Multi-Miracle Glow product but I’m afraid I spent too much and I worry that it really provides any benefits. Can you tell me if it has any special properties and if not is there a more budget conscious version? Thanks for the question, Jo. It sounds like you’re really torn about using this product so let’s see if we can help. First of all, don’t be confused if you decide to look for this product because in addition to Mult-miracle glow she also sells a “Magic Cream.” Apparently Charlotte went to the “Harry Po...

Can I use clay to shampoo my hair? Episode 136
Can I use clay to shampoo my hair?  Joneen says…I have a question about rhassoul clay. I’ve heard great things about using it as a shampoo. My concern, though, is mineral buildup. This is one of the results of hard water that has a negative impact on hair, and something I am currently experiencing and want to avoid in the future. I know rhassoul is largely silica and aluminum, but it does have some calcium and magnesium in it, the very same minerals that hard water contains that are so problematic. So it seems to stand to reason that these would also get deposited on the hair from using rhassoul. Is there a scient...

The Itch Lab — The California Sunday Magazine
The rash, which has spread from the crook of my elbow to the base of my wrist, is starting to sprout puffy, crimson welts. It's been three minutes since I rubbed a mound of coarse blond fibers onto my forearm, and what began as a mild prickling sensation has escalated into a throbbing itch. Diana Bautista doesn't seem concerned. "Will scratching make it worse?" I ask. She nods. "Yes, but it will feel really good while you're doing it." This unsanctioned self-experiment is taking place in the kitchenette of Bautista's University of California, Berkeley, lab. The source of my discomfort is...

Julia from Germany asks…I have very dry skin so I use hand cream a lot. I read an article that said if you use too much hand cream the skin on your hands can not regenerate properly anymore because it becomes dependent on the hand cream. Is this true? I wish Julia had included a link to the article so we could get more details but without further information we have to say this sounds like a misunderstand. There’s nothing about the chemistry of h...

Is rose hip oil good for anti-aging?
This study was done on masectomy patients. It was also done with 10 panelists but they used a control group so I’m assuming that means they had five test subjects and five control subjects which is a very very small base size. They had the patients apply a 26% solution of Rosehip oil for next 8 weeks and noticed increased skin growth in the sutured areas. My concern with the study other than the small base size, is that it really only measures scar prevention that has nothing to do with getting rid of existing scars. Also, I couldn’t find out how the control group was treated. If the control group received no t...

Yalmeh Aloe Super Youth Eye Cream – Look at the label
This Yalmeh eye cream is one of the top selling beauty products on Amazon this week. I would love to look at the label and tell you all about the ingredients but I can’t find a complete ingredient list ANYWHERE on the web. This is one of my pet peeves – companies that don’t disclose the ingredients in their products. Or rather, companies that only tell you about the ingredients that they WANT you to know about. According to every website I found here’s the scoop on what makes this product tick: “The ingredients in this product are primarily plant based. They contain organic and natural oils an...

Can the body absorb vitamins from topical products?
Christina’s question…Can the body absorb (beyond the skin) the vitamins from topically applied creams & oils? I have an eye condition called Stargardt’s, which basically means my eyes don’t process vitamin A the right way. There’s no treatment but my doctor recommends that I avoid vitamin A as much as possible. I’ve stopped using my retinol cream, but I would really like to be able to keep using a face oil made of (among other things) rosehip oil and apricot oil, which both contain vitamin A. I’m just wondering how much would really be absorbed from my skin and into my body, es...

How to save money on hair care products by reading the ingredients
GrayTemples says…I have samples of 3 Rare Elements products and like them very much.  I am awaiting samples of Phylia de M to try.   Please help me interpret their ingredient lists.  Do you think I can get the same benefits from a cheaper brand?  If so, which ones? The Beauty Brains respond: Unless the ingredients match exactly it’s difficult to reproduce the exact look and feel of a product. But by looking at the active ingredients that really deliver the benefit, we should be able to identify products that perform similarly. Rare El’ements Replenishing Essential Conditioner Cost $44 for 6.5 ounces (...

Nuvosa Skin Care: In the Beauty Brains Bathroom
Can I tell you how sick and tired I am of hearing anti-aging claims from companies that don’t provide ANY data to back up what they say?
