ASDAS-CRP and ASDAS-ESR cut-offs for disease activity states in axial spondyloarthritis - Are they interchangeable?
CONCLUSION: We estimated the optimal ASDAS-ESR values corresponding to the established ASDAS-CRP cut-off values. However, applying the estimated cut-offs did not increase the level of agreement between ASDAS-ESR and ASDAS-CRP disease activity states to a relevant degree. Our findings did not provide evidence to reject the established cut-off values for ASDAS-ESR.PMID:38621792 | DOI:10.3899/jrheum.2023-1217 (Source: Journal of Rheumatology)

Feasibility of physiotherapist-led rheumatology triage: A randomized study
CONCLUSION: Physiotherapist-led triage was feasible, appeared as reliable as rheumatologist triage of referrals for joint pain, and lead to significantly fewer patients requiring in-clinic visits.PMID:38621798 | DOI:10.3899/jrheum.2023-1071 (Source: Journal of Rheumatology)

Rheumatology: What You May Have Missed in 2023
Ann Intern Med. 2024 Apr 16. doi: 10.7326/M24-0678. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTMany patients with rheumatologic conditions receive care from physicians other than rheumatologists. Here we note key findings from 6 studies in rheumatology published in 2023 that offer valuable insights for internal medicine specialists and subspecialists outside of rheumatology. The first study investigated the effect of low-dose glucocorticoids on patients with rheumatoid arthritis (RA) over 2 years and challenged existing perceptions about the risks of glucocorticoids in this setting. The second study focused on the updated guideline for...

Extracellular mitochondrial components as new biomarkers for lupus nephritis
This study has evaluated extracellular mitochondrial components, including cell-free mitochondria, and cell-free mitochondrial DNA as probable biomarkers of the degree of nephritis. Both showed a significant correlation with proteinuria and protein-creatinine ratio. Our study substantiates their usage as clinical biomarkers of nephritis upon their validation in a larger cohort of lupus nephritis patients and other forms of nephritis. Although the current data suggest using cell-free mitochondria as a biomarker of lupus nephritis is better than the cell-free mitochondrial DNA.PMID:38621786 | DOI:10.1177/09612033241247622 (Source: Lupus)
