Fibromyalgia: one year in review 2024
This article summarises the main advances in FM during the last year. Even in 2023, research on FM was notably active. From a clinimetric perspective, studies have been conducted to evaluate the possibilities of interchanging the primary indices of disease severity, primarily for studies with substantial case numbers. Regarding FM pathogenesis, ongoing research focuses on small fiber neuropathy: some studies have documented its association with central sensitisation, while others have revealed distinct sensory profiles in patients with FM and small fiber neuropathy compared to those solely with small fiber neuropathy. Dors...

The Joint Vasculitis Registry in German-speaking countries (GeVas): subgroup analysis of 266 AAV-patients
CONCLUSIONS: Demographic characteristics are comparable to those in other European countries. Differences were found regarding ANCA status, frequencies of organ manifestations, and therapeutic regimens. The GeVas registry will allow longitudinal observations and prospective outcome measures in AAV.PMID:38607682 | DOI:10.55563/clinexprheumatol/suxkyq (Source: Clinical and Experimental Rheumatology)

Validation of Qualisex questionnaire to evaluate sexual dysfunction in women affected by fibromyalgia
CONCLUSIONS: This study validated Qualisex questionnaire as a good test for the sexual disorders' evaluation in FM women. Its use allows the assessment of different factors associated with sexual dysfunction, showing an impact of FM on sexuality. Moreover, due to demotivation feelings, sexual dysfunction contributes to worsen patients' quality of life.PMID:38607686 | DOI:10.55563/clinexprheumatol/a00yur (Source: Clinical and Experimental Rheumatology)

Idiopathic intracranial hypertension as the initial presenting manifestation of systemic lupus erythematosus in a child
We report a 12-year-old girl presented with chronic holocranial headache and occasional episodes of projectile vomiting for the last 6 months and then developed blurring of vision for the last month. She fulfilled the criteria for IIH. Subsequent evaluation revealed a diagnosis of SLE. The occurrence of IIH in SLE is not coincidental and is reported in 1%-5.4% of patients with SLE. Though corticosteroids have not been widely used in IIH, underlying SLE warranted administering corticosteroids with subsequent complete resolution of IIH. Pediatricians, neurologists, intensivists, and ophthalmologists should consider SLE as a ...

Sick leave and disability pension following delivery in women with systemic lupus erythematosus
CONCLUSION: SLE mothers more often had work loss in the prenatal year to 3 years postpartum compared to non-SLE mothers. Lower education and sick leave in the year of delivery were associated with a higher odds of work loss in the first year postpartum in SLE.PMID:38607692 | DOI:10.1080/03009742.2024.2321057 (Source: Scandinavian Journal of Rheumatology)

Osteonecrosis of the Knee: The Unintended Consequence of Steroid Abuse
We describe a male, aged 29 years, who presented with dull aching bilateral knee pain of 2-years' duration after a long-term steroid abuse for weight and muscle mass gain. Radiological and magnetic resonance imaging studies confirmed osteonecrosis of femoral and tibial condyles and secondary degenerative arthritis of the knee joint. Prompt suspicion, early diagnosis, and intervention in osteonecrosis of knee joints, and termination of steroids may reverse the pathology and prevent progression of disease.PMID:38609146 | DOI:10.3121/cmr.2024.1855 (Source: Clinical Medicine and Research)

Manhattan Vision Screening and Follow-up Study (NYC-SIGHT): a nested cross-sectional assessment of falls risk within a cluster randomised trial
CONCLUSION: This study detected a significant amount of falls risk in an underserved population. The STEADI Falls Risk screening questions were easy for eye care providers to ask, were highly predictive of falls risk and may be adequate for referral to occupational health and/or physical therapy.PMID:38609163 | DOI:10.1136/bjo-2022-323052 (Source: The British Journal of Ophthalmology)

Heart Failure, the Global Pandemic: A Call to Action Consensus statement from the global presidential conclave at the Platinum Jubilee Conference of Cardiological Society of India 2023
Indian Heart J. 2024 Apr 10:S0019-4832(24)00057-9. doi: 10.1016/j.ihj.2024.04.004. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTHeart failure (HF) is emerging as a major public health problem both in high- and low - income countries. The mortality and morbidity due to HF is substantially higher in low-middle income countries (LMICs). Accessibility, availability and affordability issues affect the guideline directed therapy implementation in HF care in those countries. This call to action urges all those concerned to initiate preventive strategies as early as possible, so that we can reduce HF-related morbidity and mortality. The most imp...
