New research implicates immune system in Rett syndrome
The immune system plays an unsuspected and surprising role in the progression of Rett syndrome, a severe neurological disorder affecting children, new research suggests. Rett syndrome is a neurodevelopmental disorder that is caused primarily by mutations in the gene encoding for MeCP2, an important epigenetic regulator. Children with the disorder appear to develop normally but begin to lose acquired cognitive and motor skills at 6 to 18 months of age as symptoms start to show. As they age, patients are unable to acquire verbal skills and suffer from lack of motor control. (Source: ScienceDaily Headlines)

Rett Syndrome Research Trust awards $1.3 million for clinical trial
(Case Western Reserve University) A surgical sedative may hold the key to reversing the devastating symptoms of a neurodevelopmental disorder found almost exclusively in females. Ketamine, used primarily for operative procedures, has shown such promise in mouse models that Case Western Reserve and Cleveland Clinic researchers soon will launch a two-year clinical trial using low doses of the medication in up to 35 individuals with Rett Syndrome. Blue Sky Day: Reaching for the stars with Rett syndrome
By Melinda Lancaster Every mountaintop is within reach if you just keep climbing. —Barry Finlay (award-winning author and mountain climber) On October 11, families and researchers will join together at the steps of Gordon Hall, on the campus of Harvard Medical School, to bring awareness to the struggle of our children with Rett syndrome. As our Blue Sky Girls (and one boy) begin their symbolic climb up the stairs, we are reminded of the effort researchers, parents, caregivers and especially the children themselves make on a daily basis to go onward and upward toward a goal once thought unreachable.
