Increased mortality in acromegaly is due to vascular and respiratory disease and is normalised by control of GH levels-A retrospective analysis from the UK Acromegaly Register 1970-2016
CONCLUSION: Acromegaly is associated with increased incidence of all cancers but not thyroid or colon cancer and no increase in cancer mortality. Excess mortality is due to vascular and respiratory disease. The risk is highest in the first 5 years following diagnosis and is mitigated by normalising GH levels.PMID:38652736 | DOI:10.1111/cen.15060 (Source: Clinical Breast Cancer)

An Unwanted but Long-Known Company: Post-Viral Symptoms in the Context of Past Pandemics in Switzerland (and Beyond)
Conclusion: In the next pandemic, it should not be surprising that post-viral conditions will again play a role, and pandemic plans should reflect this.PMID:38651133 | PMC:PMC11033310 | DOI:10.3389/phrs.2024.1606966 (Source: Public Health Reviews)

Characterization of Ceftriaxone-Resistant < em > Haemophilus influenzae < /em > Among Korean Children
CONCLUSION: The emergence of ceftriaxone-resistant H. influenzae with ceftriaxone MIC values of up to 0.75 mg/L was observed even in children in South Korea, with most associated with S385T and L389F substitutions. The N526K mutation alone does not significantly impact ceftriaxone resistance. Further large-scale studies are essential to investigate changes in antibiotic resistance patterns and factors influencing antibiotic resistance in H. influenzae isolated from pediatric patients in Korea.PMID:38651222 | DOI:10.3346/jkms.2024.39.e136 (Source: Journal of Korean Medical Science)

Rhinovirus infection presenting with symptomatic hyponatremia —Atypical presentation of a common infection
Key Clinical MessageRhinovirus infection has the potential to exhibit unconventional symptoms like symptomatic hyponatremia. Health care professionals should remain vigilant about this potential complication, especially in cases with uncommon presentations. Timely identification and effective management of hyponatremia can mitigate potential complications and enhance patient prognosis.AbstractThe syndrome of inappropriate secretion of antidiuretic hormone (SIADH) is a prominent contributor to low sodium levels. Various factors can contribute to hyponatremia, affecting the diagnosis and treatment of the condition. Of note, ...

Survival and safety analysis of COVID ‐19 vaccine in Chinese patients with non‐small cell lung cancer
ConclusionsCOVID-19 vaccination is safe for Chinese NSCLC patients actively receiving different antitumor treatments without increasing the incidence of adverse reactions, and vaccination does not affect cancer patient survival. (Source: Cancer Medicine)

Establishing breath as a biomarker platform —take home messages from the Breath Biopsy Conference 2023
The annual Breath Biopsy Conference hosted by Owlstone Medical gathers together the leading experts, early career researchers, and physicians working with breath as a biomarker platform for clinical purposes. The current topics in breath research are discussed and presented, and an overarching topical theme is identified and discussed as part of an expert panel to close the conference. The profiling of normal breath composition and the establishment of standards for analyzing breath compared to background signal were two important topics that were major focuses of this conference, as well as important innovative progress t...

Cystic fibrosis newborn screening in Switzerland – evaluation and scenarios for improvement after 11 years of follow-up
Newborn bloodspot screening (NBS) for cystic fibrosis (CF) has become an essential component of early CF diagnosis in many countries [1,2]. The main goal of NBS programmes is to detect infants with a treatable disease early, to initiate treatment, prevent symptoms, and decrease mortality [3]. While CF-NBS programmes have benefits for children with CF, it is important to be aware of possible harmful effects. Every follow-up test, such as a second IRT measurement or sweat test, due to a false-positive CF-NBS result causes distress for the family and burdens the health-care system [4 –6]. Changes in urinary glutathione sulfonamide (GSA) levels between admission and discharge of patients with cystic fibrosis
Data from the Australian Early Respiratory Surveillance Team for Cystic Fibrosis (AREST CF) program suggests that pulmonary inflammation, infection, and structural disease can be present not only in the absence of clinical symptoms, but in patients as young as 3 months of age [1,2]. Furthermore, acute pulmonary exacerbations, particularly those requiring hospitalisation, are significantly correlated with loss of lung function and adverse lung health outcomes [3,4]. Published data suggest that exaggerated neutrophilic inflammation is a primary driver of early CF lung disease progression [1,2,5 –7]. (Source: Journal of Cystic Fibrosis)

Pandemic planning and its relevance to surgeons
This article will briefly discuss pandemic planning and it's relevance to surgeons. It will cover principally the UK response to the severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-Cov-2) although will compare and contrast other diseases, and reference more general principles of major incident planning. Areas that individual surgeons and departments can, and should, influence are discussed. (Source: Surgery (Medicine Publishing))

Veno-venous extracorporeal membrane oxygenation for covid-19 in postpartum patients: 1-year outcome
During the pandemic, a significant number of patients with severe COVID-19 pneumonia required intensive care. Among these, peripartum women were particularly susceptible to severe respiratory symptoms. This complex pathophysiology involves mechanical and hormonal pathways, including the presence of lung restriction 1, modulation of the immune system by pregnancy 2, and increased oxygen demand 3. Additionally, a high level of vaccine hesitancy in this population meant that most pregnant women were not vaccinated during the COVID-19 pandemic 4. Identification and experimental validation of PYCARD as a crucial PANoptosis-related gene for immune response and inflammation in COPD
AbstractChronic inflammatory and immune responses play key roles in the development and progression of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). PANoptosis, as a unique inflammatory cell death modality, is involved in the pathogenesis of many inflammatory diseases. We aim to identify critical PANoptosis-related biomarkers and explore their potential effects on respiratory tract diseases and immune infiltration landscapes in COPD. Total microarray data consisting of peripheral blood and lung tissue datasets associated with COPD were obtained from the GEO database. PANoptosis-associated genes in COPD were identified by i...
