Cost-effectiveness of high-dose influenza vaccination in the Netherlands: Incorporating the impact on both respiratory and cardiovascular hospitalizations
CONCLUSIONS: Implementing HD-QIV for adults aged 60 and over within the existing influenza vaccination campaign is highly cost effective. HD-QIV may support alleviating potential capacity issues in Dutch hospitals in the winter respiratory season.PMID:38631948 | DOI:10.1016/j.vaccine.2024.04.040 (Source: Vaccine)

Modulation of mitochondrial function by extracellular acidosis in tumor cells and normal fibroblasts: Role of signaling pathways
Neoplasia. 2024 Apr 16;52:100999. doi: 10.1016/j.neo.2024.100999. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTIn many tumors pronounced extracellular acidosis resulting from glycolytic metabolism is found. Since several environmental stress factors affect the mitochondrial activity the aim of the study was to analyze the impact of acidosis on cellular oxygen consumption and which signaling pathways may be involved in the regulation. In two tumor cell lines and normal fibroblasts cellular oxygen consumption rate (OCR) and mitochondrial function were measured after 3 h at pH 6.6. Besides the activation of ERK1/2, p38 and PI3K signaling in...

Opioids-Induced Long QT Syndrome: A Challenge to Cardiac Health
Cardiovasc Toxicol. 2024 Apr 17. doi: 10.1007/s12012-024-09853-6. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTThe challenge posed by opioid overdose has become a significant concern for health systems due to the complexities associated with drug prohibition, widespread clinical use, and potential abuse. In response, healthcare professionals have primarily concentrated on mitigating the hallucinogenic and respiratory depressant consequences of opioid overdose to minimize associated risks. However, it is crucial to acknowledge that most opioids possess the capacity to prolong the QT interval, particularly in cases of overdose, thereby pot...

Hydrangea serrata extract attenuates PM-exacerbated airway inflammation in the CARAS model by modulating the IL-33/ST2/NF- κB signaling pathway
This study was conducted to investigate the efficacy of Hydrangea serrata extract (HSE) in airway inflammation in a mouse model of CARAS exacerbated by PM. In the CARAS mouse model worsened by PM, the airway inflammation improvement effect of HSE was evaluated by analyzing allergic nasal symptoms, changes in inflammatory cells, OVA-specific immunoglobulin (Ig) levels, cytokines, mast cell activation, and histopathological findings of both nasal mucosa and lung tissue. HSE effectively reduced OVA-specific IgE and IgG1 and inhibited the production of T helper type 2 (Th2)-related cytokines such as IL-4 and IL-5. Importantly,...

Two novel Fe(III)-reducing bacteria, Geothrix campi sp. nov. and Geothrix mesophila sp. nov., isolated from paddy soils
Antonie Van Leeuwenhoek. 2024 Apr 17;117(1):68. doi: 10.1007/s10482-024-01967-9.ABSTRACTIn this research, two novel Fe(III)-reducing bacteria, SG10T and SG198T of genus Geothrix, were isolated from the rice field of Fujian Agriculture and Forestry University in Fuzhou, Fujian Province, China. Strains SG10T and SG198T were strictly anaerobic, rod-shaped and Gram-stain-negative. The two novel strains exhibited iron reduction ability, utilizing various single organic acid as the elector donor and Fe(III) as a terminal electron acceptor. Strains SG10T and SG198T showed the highest 16S rRNA sequences similarities to the type st...

Ketamine Use for Palliative Care in the Austere Environment: Is Ketamine the Path Forward for Palliative Care
Am J Hosp Palliat Care. 2024 Apr 17:10499091241246520. doi: 10.1177/10499091241246520. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTThe goal of palliative care is to focus on the holistic needs of the patient and their family versus the pathology of the patient's diagnosis to reduce the stress of illness. U.S. servicemembers deployed to austere environments worldwide have significantly less access to palliative care than in military treatment facilities in the U.S. Preparation for future conflicts introduces the concept of prolonged medical management for an environment where urgent casualty evacuation is impossible. Ketamine is currentl...

Int J Syst Evol Microbiol. 2024 Apr;74(4). doi: 10.1099/ijsem.0.006339.ABSTRACTA novel Gram-stain-negative, yellow-pigmented, short rod-shaped bacterial strain, HBC34T, was isolated from a freshwater sample collected from Daechung Reservoir, Republic of Korea. The results of 16S rRNA gene sequence analysis indicated that HBC34T was affiliated with the genus Sphingobium and shared the highest sequence similarity to the type strains of Sphingobium vermicomposti (98.01 %), Sphingobium psychrophilum (97.87 %) and Sphingobium rhizovicinum (97.59 %). The average nucleotide identity (ANI) and digital DNA-DNA hybridisation (dDDH) ...

Early pandemic in-hospital outcomes and mortality risk factors in COVID-19 solid organ transplant patients
CONCLUSION: In this nationally representative sample, SOT patients presenting with COVID-19 experienced similar rates of mortality compared to those without SOT. SOT patients were more likely to develop acute kidney injury. Further research is needed to understand the complex relationship between transplant patient outcomes and COVID-19.PMID:38628349 | PMC:PMC11018036 | DOI:10.1080/08998280.2024.2325310 (Source: Baylor University Medical Center Proceedings)

Sarcoidosis presenting as multiple osseous lesions
Proc (Bayl Univ Med Cent). 2024 Mar 19;37(3):489-492. doi: 10.1080/08998280.2024.2325322. eCollection 2024.ABSTRACTSarcoidosis is a multisystem inflammatory condition presenting with the formation of noncaseating granulomas. These granulomas can be found in nearly every organ of the body, but in 90% of cases the lungs are involved. Osseous manifestations are seen in only 3% to 13% of cases and are typically seen alongside the more common pulmonary manifestations. These lesions can be misdiagnosed as metastatic cancer so biopsy, along with clinical correlation and exclusion of other diseases, is necessary to make the diagno...

Sex differences and determinants of anxiety symptoms in patients with COPD initiating pulmonary rehabilitation
CONCLUSION: Over a third of COPD patients had clinically relevant anxiety symptoms with a higher prevalence in women than men. Anxiety was associated with younger age, female gender, and impaired QoL. Early recognition and treatment of anxiety in patients with COPD is worthy of consideration for those attending PR, especially women.PMID:38631527 | DOI:10.1016/j.rmed.2024.107633 (Source: Respiratory Care)
