Can resistance training improve throwing performance in handball players? A Systematic review and meta-analysis
ConclusionStrong evidence exists only for the effectiveness of RT using barbells in increasing throwing velocity. In contrast, the remaining RT modalities, while yielding positive results, have limited support due to limited number of studies and the high heterogeneity between studies. Furthermore, there is insufficient evidence to support various forms of RT in increasing throw distance. Finally, medicine ball training and elastic band training demonstrated no benefits in improving throwing accuracy.Trial registrationPROSPERO ID: CRD42023393574. Intensive Care Unit Without Walls
Critical illness is a continuum with different phases and trajectories. The “Intensive Care Unit (ICU) without walls” concept refers to a model whereby care is adjusted in response to the patient’s needs, priorities, and preferences at each stage from detection, escalation, early decision making, treatment and organ support, followed by recovery and rehabilitation, wi thin which all healthcare staff, and the patient are equal partners. The rapid response system incorporates monitoring and alerting tools, a multidisciplinary critical care outreach team and care bundles, supported with education and training, analytica...

Comparison of computational pose estimation models for joint angles with 3D motion capture.
Human pose estimation is a growing technique and of particular benefit to clinicians and researchers working in musculoskeletal biomechanics interested in calculating human movement patterns (Stenum et al 2021). The observation of a patient ’s joint angle during a movement can determine the effectiveness of a rehabilitation programme, risk of injury and other quality of life measures (Dos Santos et al 2016) increasing the value of objectively assessing joint angle and joint range of motion (ROM) for allied health professionals. Acute compartment syndrome and fasciotomy after a viper bite in Italy: a case report
ConclusionsThis case highlights the importance of obtaining a timely assessment of the severity of viper envenomation without delaying the administration of antivenom in most serious cases. The presence of multiple bite marks on the patient is one factor that may help to predict the clinical severity of snakebites and anticipate symptom progression. Sensors, Vol. 24, Pages 2549: Choice of Piezoelectric Element over Accelerometer for an Energy-Autonomous Shoe-Based System
This article proposes two types of strategies (Strategy 1 and Strategy 2) for an energy-autonomous shoe-based system. Strategy 1 uses an accelerometer as a sensor for gait acquisition, which reflects the classical choice. Strategy 2 uses a piezoelectric element for the same, which opens up a new perspective in its implementation. In both strategies, the piezoelectric elements are used to harvest energy from foot activities and operate the system. The article presents a fair comparison between both strategies in terms of power consumption, accuracy, and the extent to which piezoelectric energy harvesters can contribute to o...

Discovering Psychological Well-Being: A Bibliometric Review
AbstractPsychological well-being is among the concepts that have attracted significant attention from researchers in the fields of social life, work life, and health in recent years. We conducted bibliometric mapping and content analysis to reveal current trends in the concept and contribute to the literature. Using VOSviewer, Citespace, Bibliometrix and MS Office Excel programs, we analysed 16,885 academic studies published in the Web of Science database between 1980 and 2022. The research results show a continuous increase in publications and citations, with a notable surge observed after 2016. The United States accounts...

Collapse of zone 0 landing TEVAR (Najuta) and the development of higher brain dysfunction
J Cardiovasc Surg (Torino). 2024 Apr 15. doi: 10.23736/S0021-9509.24.12982-5. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTAlthough thoracic endovascular repair (TEVAR)-specific complications often develop, stent-graft collapse is a rare, but fatal complication that requires attention. A 62-year-old male underwent TEVAR for a saccular distal arch aortic aneurysm. After the placement of the Gore TAG (W. L. Gore & Associates, Inc., Newark, DE, USA) from zones 2 to 4, a Najuta endograft (Kawasumi Laboratories, Inc., Tokyo, Japan) was deployed from zone 0. Neither intraoperative angiography nor postoperative contrast-enhanced computed to...

Risk factors associated with a history of iliotibial band syndrome (hITBS) in distance runners: a cross-sectional study in 76 654 race entrants - a SAFER XXXIII study
CONCLUSION: Apart from female sex, younger age, fewer years of running and slower running speed, two novel independent risk factors associated with hITBS in distance runners are an increased number of chronic diseases and a history of allergies. Identifying athletes at higher risk for ITBS can guide healthcare professionals in their prevention and rehabilitation efforts.PMID:38618688 | DOI:10.1080/00913847.2024.2341607 (Source: The Physician and Sportsmedicine Online)

Pulmonology: What You May Have Missed in 2023
Ann Intern Med. 2024 Apr 16. doi: 10.7326/M24-0613. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTThe field of pulmonology saw significant advances in 2023. The publications highlighted in this article address advances and changes in practice related to asthma, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), interstitial lung disease, pleural disorders, and sleep-disordered breathing. One article reviews data examining the efficacy of vaccination against respiratory syncytial virus, a respiratory viral illness that has had devastating effects globally. Four studies evaluate the role of various therapies in COPD, including dupilumab, ensifen...

Factors affecting upper limb functional recovery after mastectomy with immediate breast reconstruction: a prospective study
CONCLUSION: Postoperative shoulder function was comparable between the two IBR approaches. However, different factors were associated with improved upper limb disability between ABR and IMBR. Acute rehabilitation focused on resolving muscle tightness and pain may help mitigate upper limb disabilities following IBR.Trial registration number: KCT 0006501.PMID:38616681 | DOI:10.1080/09593985.2024.2343043 (Source: Physiotherapy Theory and Practice)
