Patients' perceptions of participating in self-directed activities outside supervised occupational and physiotherapy within inpatient and home-based rehabilitation settings: a qualitative study
CONCLUSIONS: Patients and their carers reported positive experiences of participating in self-directed therapy programs within rehabilitation settings, with programs perceived as beneficial in optimising recovery. Patients reported a range of driving and limiting factors in relation to completing self-directed activities. Understanding these factors, relating to the patient, their environment and other people, is critical for clinicians so that they can modify their delivery accordingly, ensuring uptake and sustained implementation of self-directed activities in rehabilitation care.PMID:38625404 | DOI:10.1080/09638288.2024...

The capability approach in rehabilitation: developing capability care
CONCLUSIONS: We have shown that it is possible to develop a healthcare intervention based on the capability approach. We hope that rehabilitation professionals will be encouraged to use capability care and that other medical professionals will be inspired to develop capability care in their respective fields.REGISTRATION: Registered at trialregister.nl NL8946.PMID:38625146 | DOI:10.1080/09638288.2024.2342494 (Source: Disability and Rehabilitation)

Rehabilitation experiences following major lower limb amputation due to complications of vascular disease: a UK qualitative study
CONCLUSIONS: Findings highlight the importance of fellow patients in supporting rehabilitation following lower limb amputation. Enabling contact with other patients should thus be a key consideration when planning rehabilitation. There is a clear unmet need for realistic information relating to post-amputation recovery, tailored to the needs of individual patients.PMID:38622944 | DOI:10.1080/09638288.2024.2329747 (Source: Disability and Rehabilitation)

A Stage-Wise Residual Attention Generation Adversarial Network for Mandibular Defect Repairing and Reconstruction
Int J Neural Syst. 2024 Apr 13:2450033. doi: 10.1142/S0129065724500333. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTSurgical reconstruction of mandibular defects is a clinical routine manner for the rehabilitation of patients with deformities. The mandible plays a crucial role in maintaining the facial contour and ensuring the speech and mastication functions. The repairing and reconstruction of mandible defects is a significant yet challenging task in oral-maxillofacial surgery. Currently, the mainly available methods are traditional digitalized design methods that suffer from substantial artificial operations, limited applicability an...

The mechanisms of exercise improving cardiovascular function by stimulating Piezo1 and TRP ion channels: a systemic review
Mol Cell Biochem. 2024 Apr 16. doi: 10.1007/s11010-024-05000-5. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTMechanosensitive ion channels are widely distributed in the heart, lung, bladder and other tissues, and plays an important role in exercise-induced cardiovascular function promotion. By reviewing the PubMed databases, the results were summarized using the terms "Exercise/Sport", "Piezo1", "Transient receptor potential (TRP)" and "Cardiovascular" as the keywords, 124-related papers screened were sorted and reviewed. The results showed that: (1) Piezo1 and TRP channels play an important role in regulating blood pressure and the deve...

Unlocking Patient Voices: Advancing Physical Therapist Practice with Discrete Choice Experiments
This article addresses the importance of eliciting patient preferences as part of person-centered care in the value-based space, the challenges faced in preference measurement in physical therapy, and how the discrete choice experiment can alleviate some of those challenges. It also provides examples of the discrete choice experiment in health care and suggests ways in which it can be effectively used in physical therapist practice to improve the delivery of meaningful rehabilitation services to patients. Implementing greater use of the DCE in physical therapy can improve person-centered physical therapist service delivery...

Survey of the Knowledge, Attitudes, and Practices of Neurologists Regarding Exercise in Parkinson's Disease
CONCLUSIONS: Specialists were more confident than general neurologists about the effect of exercise and recommended more-intense activities regardless of the disease stage. These results highlight the need to develop clinical practice guidelines and PD-specialized exercise protocols to provide optimal care for PD patients.PMID:38627229 | DOI:10.3988/jcn.2023.0344 (Source: Journal of Clinical Neurology)

Poststroke Communication Ability Predicts Patient-Informant Discrepancies in Reported Activities and Participation
DISCUSSION: These findings highlight the importance of measuring participation by PROM. The PWA's experience of participation is not related to their level of language impairment and is predictably different from their care partners' perspective. As others have also reported, "mild" aphasia is not so mild to the PWA. Similarly, "severe" may not be so severe to the PWA. Further research is needed to connect these findings with counseling and caregiver education. Research on response processes (e.g., response shift) is also warranted.PMID:38625105 | DOI:10.1044/2024_AJSLP-23-00322 (Source: American Journal of Speech-Language Pathology)
