Collapse of zone 0 landing TEVAR (Najuta) and the development of higher brain dysfunction
J Cardiovasc Surg (Torino). 2024 Apr 15. doi: 10.23736/S0021-9509.24.12982-5. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTAlthough thoracic endovascular repair (TEVAR)-specific complications often develop, stent-graft collapse is a rare, but fatal complication that requires attention. A 62-year-old male underwent TEVAR for a saccular distal arch aortic aneurysm. After the placement of the Gore TAG (W. L. Gore & Associates, Inc., Newark, DE, USA) from zones 2 to 4, a Najuta endograft (Kawasumi Laboratories, Inc., Tokyo, Japan) was deployed from zone 0. Neither intraoperative angiography nor postoperative contrast-enhanced computed to...

Applying exercise capacity and physical activity as single vs. composite endpoints for trials of cardiac rehabilitation interventions: Rationale, use-case, and a blueprint method for sample size calculation
CONCLUSIONS: Trialists may consider the utility of the composite endpoint for future studies in exercise-based cardiac rehabilitation, which could reduce sample size requirements. However, perhaps surprisingly at first, the composite endpoint could also lead to an increased sample size needed, depending on the observed baseline proportions in the trial population and the aim of the intervention.PMID:38621456 | DOI:10.1016/j.apmr.2024.04.004 (Source: Health Physics)

Risk factors associated with a history of iliotibial band syndrome (hITBS) in distance runners: a cross-sectional study in 76 654 race entrants - a SAFER XXXIII study
CONCLUSION: Apart from female sex, younger age, fewer years of running and slower running speed, two novel independent risk factors associated with hITBS in distance runners are an increased number of chronic diseases and a history of allergies. Identifying athletes at higher risk for ITBS can guide healthcare professionals in their prevention and rehabilitation efforts.PMID:38618688 | DOI:10.1080/00913847.2024.2341607 (Source: Health Physics)

Pulmonology: What You May Have Missed in 2023
Ann Intern Med. 2024 Apr 16. doi: 10.7326/M24-0613. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTThe field of pulmonology saw significant advances in 2023. The publications highlighted in this article address advances and changes in practice related to asthma, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), interstitial lung disease, pleural disorders, and sleep-disordered breathing. One article reviews data examining the efficacy of vaccination against respiratory syncytial virus, a respiratory viral illness that has had devastating effects globally. Four studies evaluate the role of various therapies in COPD, including dupilumab, ensifen...

A Systematized Review of Coping Strategies Among Caregivers of Children with Disabilities
This study aims to accumulate the types of coping strategies used by caregivers by using a bibliometric approach. Data for the analysis were retrieved from the widely used Scopus and Web of Science databases, known for their comprehensive coverage of social sciences and humanities literature. Following the PRISMA guidelines, a total of 30 documents relevant to the theme  were included in the study. These articles were then carefully examined and reviewed in depth by the authors. The analysis of the published literature encompassed various coping themes employed by caregivers, such as problem-oriented strategy, emotion-ori...

Prevalence of elevated lipoprotein(a) in cardiac rehabilitation patients — results from a large-scale multicentre registry in Germany
ConclusionsLp(a) had been rarely assessed in acute management of aortic valve stenosis or premature myocardial infarction despite expanding scientific evidence and guideline recommendation. Given the above-average incidence of elevated Lp(a) levels, awareness for Lp(a) has to increase substantially to better identify and manage high-risk patients.Graphical Abstract (Source: Clinical Research in Cardiology)
