Radiologists ‘compete’ on chest x-rays reads with and without AI
In a study described as a “competition between radiologists,” participants tasked with identifying abnormal findings on chest x-rays performed better with AI assistance than without AI assistance – though not by much and not in all cases, according to a group in Nanjing, Jiangsu, China. Significantly, however, AI assistance allowed participants to cut reading times by nearly half, noted lead author Lili Guo, MD, of Nanjing Medical University, and colleagues. “This competition demonstrated the value of AI in detecting and localizing many pathologies in chest radiographs by simulating the real work situations of ra...

Functional MRI shows promise for treating chronic severe tinnitus
Real-time functional MRI (fMRI) neurofeedback therapy may be more effective for treating chronic severe tinnitus than cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT), researchers have found. The study results are good news for those who suffer from the condition, wrote a group led by Nicolas Gninenko, PhD, of École Polytechnique Fédérale de Lausanne in Switzerland. "[We found that] real-time fMRI neurofeedback therapy led to a greater reduction in tinnitus distress than the current standard treatment of CBT," the investigators reported. Chronic tinnitus is common, but "no evidence-based universal cure exists and currently availab...

Butterfly Network launches Butterfly iQ3
Butterfly Network has launched its third-generation handheld point-of-care ultrasound (POCUS) system, Butterfly iQ3, which in January received clearance from the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA). Butterfly iQ3 is powered by a semiconductor chip with a data transfer rate that is double that of its predecessor, the company said. It also features a novel “no focus” rubber lens, allowing providers to identify anatomy, observe small structures, and make more confident diagnostic decisions. Launching on Butterfly iQ3 are two new 3D imaging capabilities designed to make image capturing easier: iQ Slice and iQ Fan...

Nanox gets FDA nod for HealthFLD liver attenuation software
Nanox's deep-learning medical imaging analytics subsidiary, Nanox AI, has received 510(k) clearance from the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) for HealthFLD liver attenuation software. HealthFLD provides automated qualitative and quantitative analysis of liver attenuation from routine contrast and non-contrast chest and abdomen CT scans. The company highlighted HealthFLD's performance in a 2023 study of nearly 3,000 patients, which found that the software achieved a sensitivity of 77.8% and specificity of 93.2% at less than 80 HU. This marks the third product in Nanox AI’s suite of population health software pro...

Marion Smits speaks on TikTok, open access and all things ECR
This may come as a surprise given her academic credentials and reputation for high-quality peer-reviewed scientific research, but Dr. Marion Smits, PhD, is a big fan of TikTok. She strongly urges every radiologist to make more use of social media. Less surprising perhaps, she's also a massive supporter of open-access publishing and ECR. Ahead of this month's congress in Vienna, we caught up with Smits, who is chair of the European Society of Radiology (ESR) Research Committee and chief of neuroradiology and chair of the neuroradiology fellowship program at Erasmus MC in Rotterdam, the Netherlands. In a video interview, sh...

Quebec cancer center first in Canada to use Accuray's Radixact system
Montérégie Integrated Cancer Center in Quebec, Canada, part of Charles-LeMoyne Hospital, is the first center in the country to treat cancer patients using Accuray's Radixact radiation therapy delivery system. A second Radixact system is scheduled to be installed at the center later in 2024. The system at the Montérégie center also incorporates the Accuray exclusive ClearRT helical fan-beam kVCT imaging solution and Synchrony motion adaptation technology. Combined, this allows for clinicians to acquire diagnostic-like quality CT images along with tracking, detecting, and correcting for tumor movement in real-time, the ...

PET links impaired sleep in Alzheimer ’s disease patients to tau protein
PET scans have revealed specific brain pathology that may drive sleep disturbances in Alzheimer’s disease patients, according to a study published February 8 in the Journal of the Neurological Sciences. In a large group, abnormal nighttime behaviors were linked with greater baseline tau on F-18 flortaucipir PET scans, with the finding offering a potential new target for delaying cognitive decline, noted lead author Ryan Kim, of Harvard University in Cambridge, MA, and colleagues. “Our results help identify high-risk individuals who could benefit from sleep-related interventions aimed to delay cognitive decline and [A...

Could CEM be suitable alternative for imaging lobular carcinoma?
Contrast-enhanced mammography (CEM) can locally stage lobular breast carcinomas and could serve as an alternative to breast MRI, according to research published February 12 in Clinical Radiology. A team led by Elisabetta Giannotti, MD, from Hospital NHS Foundation Trust in Cambridge, U.K., found that CEM had superior sensitivity compared to standard mammography and that both CEM and MRI overestimate tumor size to a similar degree. "Traditionally, breast MRI has been used in many centers for preoperative staging, but CEM appears to be a suitable alternative,” the Giannotti team wrote. Invasive lobular carcinoma is the ...

LI-RADS'Category S' helps primary care providers better manage incidental LDCT findings
Radiology reports that make use of a standardized "category S" template for incidental findings on low-dose CT (LDCT) for lung cancer screening help primary care providers better manage patient care, researchers have reported. The study results could help support nonradiologists as lung cancer screening becomes "embedded in clinical practice," wrote a team led by Yukiko Kunitomo, MD, of Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore. The research was published February 9 in Chest."Our results suggest that [primary care providers] are not readily familiar with incidental finding management guidelines and frequently rely on radiologis...
