Under-reporting of vertebral fractures by radiologists: A missed opportunity
(International Osteoporosis Foundation) A new retrospective study by researchers at the University of Oxford has found that within a cohort of hip fracture patients many had previous imaging studies showing incidental vertebral fractures -- but 54 percent of the vertebral fractures were not reported by radiologists. The study puts a spotlight on the under-reporting of osteoporotic vertebral fractures, particularly by radiologists who are not specialized in musculoskeletal imaging. This is a missed opportunity to prevent subsequent, often life-threatening hip fractures. (Source: EurekAlert! - Medicine and Health)

GE Healthcare wins FDA nod for mammography system with patient controlled compression
GE Healthcare (NYSE:GE) said yesterday it won FDA 510(k) clearance for its Senographe Pristina Dueta, which it claims is the 1st patient-assisted mammography device that allows women to control their own compression during the examination. With the system, the woman undergoing the exam can control the application of compression on their breasts to minimize perceived pain and discomfort that is often associated with a mammogram, the company said. “This is a new age in breast imaging. Patients who used the remote control said the exam was more comfortable and they were visibly more relaxed. Any breast radiologist ...

New technique gives a clearer image of immunotherapy results in advanced brain cancer
FINDINGSResearchers led by Robert Prins, a member of the UCLA Jonsson Comprehensive Cancer Center, have developed a new approach for brain imaging that can better distinguish immune responses from tumor growth in both preclinical studies and in people with glioblastoma.BACKGROUNDDespite clinical advances in immunotherapy for cancer, non-invasive monitoring of tumor growth (especially in people with brain tumors) has been a significant problem. When clinicians use traditional medical imaging processes, the inflammation that sometimes results from immunotherapies can resemble neurological decline and tumor growth.METHODPrins...
