Morphological Characteristics of the Lacrimal Apparatus in its Obstruction of Various Genesis
AbstractSecondary acquired lacrimal duct obstruction (SALDO) is one of the complications of radioiodine therapy. The material was obtained during endoscopic dacryocystorhinostomy with revision of Hasner ’s valve in patients with PANDO (n = 7) in the distal segments of the nasolacrimal duct and in patients with SALDO (n = 7) after radioactive iodine therapy. The material was stained with hemotoxylin and eosin, alcyan blue, and by Masson method. Morphological and morphometric analyses were performed in semi-automatic mode. The results of histochemical staining of sections were translated into points taking into acc...

Impact of Age on Prognosis in Papillary Thyroid Carcinoma: How Should Age be Incorporated into the Treatment Strategy?
ConclusionRegardless of age, PTC patients without ETE are candidates for a treatment strategy not using RAI, and more aggressive treatment may be recommended for elderly PTC patients with ETE. (Source: World Journal of Surgery)

Cancers, Vol. 15, Pages 740: Probiotic Bacteria Cannot Mitigate the Adverse Effects of Radioactive Iodine-131 Treatment
mbit Sihver Thyroid carcinoma is the most common cancer of the endocrine system, accounting for 12% of all cancer cases in adolescents in the United States. Radioiodine therapy plays a key role in differentiated thyroid cancer (DTC) treatment. This double-blind, randomized, placebo-controlled clinical trial was aimed at evaluating the effect of probiotics supplementation in reducing the acute side-effects of radioiodine therapy in PTC patients. Fifty-six patients were randomly divided into four groups: one placebo and three intervention groups. The probiotics product used in this study was LactoCare (ZistTakhmir Co., I...

Recombinant or endogenous TSH for radioactive iodine therapy in thyroid cancer: state of knowledge and current controversies
Eur J Endocrinol. 2023 Jan 19:lvad006. doi: 10.1093/ejendo/lvad006. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTFor patients undergoing radioiodine therapy of differentiated thyroid carcinoma (DTC), TSH stimulation prior to radioiodine therapy (RIT) can be achieved using thyroid hormone withdrawal (THW) or administration of recombinant human TSH (rhTSH). As THW can lead to nausea, headaches, vomiting, fatigue and dizziness secondary to transient acute hypothyroidism, rhTSH could be a good alternative. rhTSH has been administered in patients in order to stimulate TSH for RIT since 2005. According to the Martinique criteria formulated by ...

SPECT/CT-based dosimetry of salivary glands and iodine-avid lesions following 131I therapy
ConclusionIt was inferred that dose estimation after RIT with SPECT/CT is feasible to apply, together with good agreement with published124I PET/CT dose estimates. A broad and sub-effective dose range was estimated for thyroid residues and distal lesions. Moreover, the current methodology might be useful for establishing a dose –effect relationship and radiation-induced salivary glands damage after RIT. (Source: Health and Technology)

Aggressive course of differentiated thyroid gland cancer in a patient with insulin resistance: case analysis from practice
Wiad Lek. 2022;75(11 pt 2):2878-2883. doi: 10.36740/WLek202211227.ABSTRACTDifferentiated thyroid cancer (DTC) is usually characterized by a harmless clinical behavior but in some cases it can manifest itself as a metastatic damage to the bone system. The authors reported case from their practice of an aggressive DTC course in a patient with insulin resistance, accompanied by the development of metastases in the bone system. The main goals of the patient's treatment at each stage of radioiodine therapy were to reduce the foci of metastatic bone damage in terms of their number and volume as well as insulin resistance as a ri...

Long-term outcomes and prognostic factors of patients with lung metastases from differentiated thyroid cancer after radioiodine therapy in Japan
This study aimed to investigate the long-term survival and prognostic factors of radioiodine therapy (RIT) in a University Hospital setting. This retrospective study included 62 patients with lung metastases from DTC who received RIT between March 2005 and December 2016. According to the 131I whole-body scan and chest computed tomography results, lung metastases were classified as 131I-avid or non-131I-avid, and miliary, micronodular, or macronodular metastases. The 5- and 10-year overall survival (OS) rates from the initial RIT were calculated by the Kaplan-Meier method, and a proportional hazard fit analysis was performe...

The relationship of the clinicopathological characteristics and treatment results of post-Chornobyl papillary thyroid microcarcinomas with the latency period and radiation exposure
DiscussionIn summary, we did not observe overall worsening of the clinicopathological features or treatment results of radiogenic MPTCs that could be associated with the latency period or POC level, suggesting that radiation history did not strongly affect those in the analyzed MPTC patients. However, the increase in the invasive properties with tumor size indicates the need for individual risk stratification for each MPTC patient, regardless of radiation history, for treatment decision-making. Circumferential Laryngotracheal Resection in Thyroid Cancer: Experience and Outcome in a Single Center
Indian J Otolaryngol Head Neck Surg. 2022 Oct;74(Suppl 2):2629-2635. doi: 10.1007/s12070-020-02339-1. Epub 2021 Jan 7.ABSTRACTThere is limited experience of laryngotracheal resection in patients with differentiated thyroid carcinoma (DTC). The aim of this study was to report our experience of circumferential laryngotracheal resection in DTC and its long-term outcome. In this retrospective study, 10 patients of locally invasive DTC who underwent circumferential laryngotracheal resection between January 2000 and December 2015 were included. Clinicopathologic profile and follow up was noted. Mean age of the cohort was 50.1 ±...
