Deepc acquires Osimis
Deepc GmbH has acquired the Osimis Platform. The Belgium-based company Osimis was created following the success of Orthanc, an open-source DICOM server for healthcare and medical research, according to its website. Osimis has since become a vendor-neutral AI integration platform for radiology departments. Last year, Osimis announced platform additions that included contextflow for chest CT, Lunit for mammography and chest x-ray, Milvue for scheduled and emergency radiographs, Pixyl for neuroimaging, and Therapixel MammoScreen for mammography screening. In April 2023, Osimis announced an AI in medical imaging (AIMI) ranki...

Radiologists ‘compete’ on chest x-rays reads with and without AI
In a study described as a “competition between radiologists,” participants tasked with identifying abnormal findings on chest x-rays performed better with AI assistance than without AI assistance – though not by much and not in all cases, according to a group in Nanjing, Jiangsu, China. Significantly, however, AI assistance allowed participants to cut reading times by nearly half, noted lead author Lili Guo, MD, of Nanjing Medical University, and colleagues. “This competition demonstrated the value of AI in detecting and localizing many pathologies in chest radiographs by simulating the real work situations of ra...

Automatic caries detection in bitewing radiographs —Part II: experimental comparison
ConclusionsThe automatic method consistently outperformed novices and performed as well as highly experienced dentists.Clinical significanceThe consensus in caries detection between experts is low. An automatic method based on deep learning can improve both the accuracy and repeatability of caries detection, providing a useful second opinion even for very experienced dentists. Is human-AI ‘symbiosis’ the path forward in chest x-ray?
AuntMinnie.com recently spoke with Warren Gefter, MD, of the University of Pennsylvania, lead author of a recent article in Radiology proposing that human-AI symbiosis – rather than totally autonomous AI – should be the current goal for AI in chest radiography. “There are cases where an AI can outperform a human, and vice versa, but, if it’s done right, neither the AI nor the radiologist can outperform a human-AI partnership,” wrote. But what would this look like? Click below to learn more about the authors’ vision. (Source: AuntMinnie.com Headlines)

Is cone-beam computed tomography (CBCT) an alternative to plain radiography in assessments of dental disease? A study of method agreement in a medically compromised patient population
ConclusionsCBCT was an alternative to IO in diagnosing periapical lesions. Both modalities found the same healthy teeth in 93.8%. All modalities were performed equally regarding marginal bone level. In caries diagnosis, artifacts were the major cause of fallout for CBCT.Clinical relevanceIntraoral radiography is the first-hand choice for diagnosing dental disease. For some rare cases where intraoral imaging is not possible, a dedicated panoramic image and/or CBCT examination is an alternative. (Source: Dental Technology Blog)

Decent NHS pay rise is crucial if both the workforce and the economy are to grow, say health unions
Proper investment in NHS staff is essential for both the UK’s economic success and if there’s to be any hope of filling record staff vacancies, health unions say today (Friday). A new report, compiled on behalf of 14 unions representing more than a million health workers in England, makes clear rebuilding the NHS workforce will be impossible without the fair, sustained wage rises central to recruiting and hanging on to staff. The unions also call for action from the government in the 2024/25 pay round to tackle the wage and staffing issues crucial to cutting the treatment backlog and giving patients the qualit...

Music calms patients undergoing imaging procedures
Music can be calming for patients undergoing medical imaging, an article published February 7 in Radiography suggests. A team led by Lina Viera, PhD, from the Lisbon Polytechnic Institute in Portugal found that musical interventions, whether they be classical songs or sounds of nature, can reduce anxiety and heart rate outcomes in patients. This includes imaging procedures such as MRI, mammography, and PET among others. “Musical intervention arises as a painless, reliable, low-cost, and side-effect-free strategy, presenting imaging departments with a practical means to enhance patient comfort and mitigate anxiety and s...

What is the Differential Diagnosis of a Suprarenal Mass?
Discussion Suprarenal masses (SRM) are not that common (incidence of 1.9/1000 in neonates), but are more commonly diagnosed prenatally because of prenatal ultrasound. Masses can be difficult to accurately diagnose even after birth because their features overlap. Radiographically they can be variable in size, cystic/solid or mixed and with or without calcifications. Common signs and symptoms of SRM include anemia, jaundice, scrotal hematoma and abdominal mass. Signs of asphyxia may also occur. Often patients whose diagnosis is not clear are monitored closely for a few weeks to see how the lesion changes with time. This is e...

Using deep learning with CT helps predict hip fractures
A deep-learning model that includes digital x-rays reconstructed from 3D hip CT images shows promise for predicting subsequent fractures in patients with a relatively recent hip break, researchers have found. The findings could improve how clinicians care for their patients, wrote a team led by doctoral candidate Yisak Kim of Seoul National University Graduate School in South Korea. The group's findings were published January 30 in Radiology. "Developing a prediction model for short-term subsequent fracture risk is important because it would identify patients at the highest risk and aid in determining appropriate treatme...

Researchers talk breast cancer disparities with AuntMinnie.com
While evidence abounds when it comes to health disparities facing women seeking breast cancer screening, radiology departments continue to struggle with consistent success when addressing barriers.Bersu Ozcan, MD, and Jessica Porembka, MD, both from the University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center, recently co-authored a comprehensive piece in RadioGraphics outlining the challenges breast radiologists face in this area. They also highlighted opportunities to successfully remove barriers for women. (Source: AuntMinnie.com Headlines)

AI's impact on false-positive mammograms, breast cancer screening performance
Computer-aided detection (CAD) software for mammography has been available for decades but has traditionally been hampered by a high number of false-positive marks. AI software based on deep-learning algorithms is showing promise, however, for helping to improve specificity in screening mammography and other breast imaging modalities. Just over 40.5 million mammograms were performed in the U.S. in 2023, according to Mammography Quality Standards Act (MQSA) national statistics. Although mammogram is the most widely used screening modality, a known problem is that 9.5% of the 10% of women contacted for further testing after...

Is human-AI ‘symbiosis’ the path forward in chest radiography?
Human-AI symbiosis – rather than totally autonomous AI – should be the current goal for AI in chest radiography, according to an editorial published January 23 in Radiology.“In the coming years, radiologists will find themselves working in a reimagined diagnostic cockpit, increasingly interpreting chest radiographs and other imaging studies in symbiotic partnership with AI,” proposed lead author Warren Gefter, MD, of the University of Pennsylvania in Philadelphia, and colleagues. To achieve this vision, radiologists will need to apply the goals of “human-centered AI” and symbiosis to the design and implementatio...
