Treatment Planning: comparing techniques and standards
ConclusionsPT shows many dosimetric advantages but emphasizes challenges like range uncertainty. RBE modelling plays a crucial role, and LET-based optimization introduces new possibilities. Addressing uncertainties and embracing innovation are vital for enhancing PT ’s efficacy. (Source: Health and Technology)

Lived experiences of healthcare. Putting the person in person centred care in the medical radiation sciences
Contemporary healthcare models recognise person-centred care (PCC) as a fundamental principle of quality, safe care. While substantial literature exists on PCC in healthcare generally, there is less evidence on how this relates to medical imaging and radiation therapy.Embedding patient-lived experiences of healthcare into healthcare education has promise in enhancing students ’ confidence in delivering PCC. Digital storytelling (DST) of patient-lived experiences can help improve reflection, understanding, critical thinking and empathy. (Source: Radiography)

Current issues in dose-finding designs: A response to the US Food and Drug Adminstrations's oncology center of excellence project optimus
Clin Trials. 2024 Apr 3:17407745241234652. doi: 10.1177/17407745241234652. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTWith the advent of targeted agents and immunological therapies, the medical research community has become increasingly aware that conventional methods for determining the best dose or schedule of a new agent are inadequate. It has been well established that conventional phase I designs cannot reliably identify safe and effective doses. This problem applies, generally, for cytotoxic agents, radiation therapy, targeted agents, and immunotherapies. To address this, the US Food and Drug Administration's Oncology Center of E...

A vocal cord palsy caused by the uterine cancer metastatic tumor in the mediastinum revealed in a patient with a  thyroid lesion: a case report and review of the literature
ConclusionA history of the disease should always be kept in mind when assessing a patient ’s complaints. VCP in case of thyroid pathology and previous secondary malignancy may be caused by metastatic tumor anywhere along the RLN pathway. Such a rare case shows the importance of additional methods of examination which may avoid unnecessary thyroid surgeries. (Source: Journal of Medical Case Reports)

Newly Diagnosed Mental Health Disorders in Patients with Breast Cancer Receiving Radiation Therapy
Patients with a mental health disorder (MHD) have higher age-adjusted mortality compared to the general population. Few reports investigate factors contributing to MHD among breast cancer patients receiving radiotherapy. Here, we report the incidence of acquired MHD after the diagnosis of breast cancer and treatment with radiotherapy. (Source: International Journal of Radiation Oncology * Biology * Physics)

A low-cost phantom design for evaluating spine SABR calculations in the presence of prosthetic vertebral stabilization
We present an initial design for a low-cost phantom to evaluate spine stereotactic ablative radiotherapy (SABR) in the presence of prosthetic vertebral stabilization. The phantom is modular, allowing the prosthetic at the centre of the phantom to be removed by exchanging the central block. It also includes space to insert ion chamber and film. The agreement of the RayStation TPS (v8.0B) collapsed cone convolution (CCC) calculation and measurement was determined for phantom versions with and without prosthetic. There was little to no change in the agreement between the measured and calculated dose when introducing metallic ...

Fibrin glue mediated direct delivery of radiation sensitizers results in enhanced efficacy of radiation treatment
ConclusionNon-degraded RS was released from the FG for up to 72  h. FG-released 5FU greatly increased the efficacy of radiation therapy. (Source: Hormones and Cancer)

Does lower dose pilocarpine have a role in radiation-induced xerostomia in the modern radiotherapy era? A single-center experience based on patient-reported outcome measures
ConclusionPilocarpine may be considered at doses lower for late-term dry mouth. With modern radiotherapy techniques effectively preserving the parotid gland, short-term use may be recommended in these patients. Future studies may enhance the development of a more robust patient selection criteria model. (Source: European Archives of Oto-Rhino-Laryngology)

Comprehensive radiotherapy for pediatric Ewing Sarcoma: Outcomes of a prospective proton study
Patients with Ewing sarcoma (EWS) are treated with combination therapy, which includes radiation therapy (RT) as a treatment option for the primary tumor site (local control). Historically, the best local control (LC) outcomes have been achieved with surgery alone or combination of surgery with adjuvant RT for patients with high risk factors such as positive tumor margins after surgery or poor response to adjuvant/ induction chemotherapy. Definitive RT is often reserved for large tumors in anatomical locations where surgical resection is considered to be too morbid [1 –3]. (Source: Radiotherapy and Oncology)

Cost of Treatment for Brain Metastases Using Data From a National Health Insurance
CONCLUSIONS: Whole-brain radiation therapy was the least costly radiation technique. Similar per-treatment prices for Gamma Knife and linear accelerator SRS support their use in treating BMs. Stereotactic radiation therapy in general was costlier on a per-use basis than SRS, prompting further scrutiny on its frequent use. Hippocampal avoidance intensity modulated radiation therapy was the costliest radiation therapy on a per-use basis by a moderate amount, prompting further discussion about its comparative cost effectiveness against other radiation modalities. This study underscores the importance of multiple consideration...

Proapoptotic effects of ceranib-2 in combination with radiation therapy on human breast cancer cells
CONCLUSIONS: The study results suggest that co-treatment of human breast adenocarcinoma cells with a ceramidase inhibitor, ceranib-2, and a high dose of radiation of 20 Gy exerted cytotoxicity and apoptosis and might be a solid, potent alternative to current therapy strategies.PMID:38567595 | DOI:10.26355/eurrev_202403_35736 (Source: Pharmacological Reviews)

Outcomes of Simultaneous Versus Staged Resection for Stage IV Colorectal Cancer with Synchronous Liver Metastases
CONCLUSIONS: Practice patterns within Southern California KP hospitals favor minor colorectal and liver resections. However, there were no significant differences in demographics, treatment rates, or outcomes between simultaneous and staged resection. While not statistically significant, our findings of a 11.9% higher major liver resection rate and 7.5-month longer median disease-free survival in the staged resection group may benefit from further study with higher power datasets.PMID:38567700 | DOI:10.1177/00031348241244632 (Source: The American Surgeon)
