Scottish GP workforce faces 'severe difficulties'
Doctors leaders in Scotland have warned that general practice is facing severe workforce problems after a survey revealed that almost 60 per cent of GPs were planning to leave or cut their hours. The survey, carried out by ComRes for the Royal College of General Practitioners (Scotland), found that nearly nine in 10 of those questioned felt that lack of resources was putting patients at risk. Meanwhile, 77 per cent said they worried about missing something serious with a patient because of their workload. The findings were released in the last week of campaigning before the Scottish Parliament elections on 5 May. BMA Scott...

GPs call for fair share of funding
The BMA has launched an action plan to help general practice cope with ever-increasing demand and shrinking resources. The report, Responsive, safe and sustainable: our urgent prescription for general practice, calls for the Government, NHS England and clinical commissioning groups to provide fair and sustainable funding, lower workloads, an expanded workforce and a reduced role for the CQC (Care Quality Commission). It says primary care should have 11 per cent of NHS spending, returning it to the level it received at the end of the last decade. BMA GPs committee chair Chaand Nagpaul, pictured, said: ‘GPs across the ...

Doctors reject abolition of QOF
GPs in Wales have rejected calls to abandon care quality indicators. The Welsh local medical committees conference last weekend turned down suggestions by some representatives to abolish the QOF (quality and outcomes framework). GPs negotiators in England are to explore, among other possibilities, getting rid of the QOF altogether as part of their next annual contract talks. Leading calls to abandon the QOF in Wales, north Wales GP Alison Hill said: ‘[The QOF] has taken the focus away from what matters to patients in a consultation. It has used up the time and energy of healthcare professionals — somethi...

General practice needs long-term rescue plan
Urgent action is needed on a long-term rescue plan for general practice, further to a GP contract deal for England. As a result of annual negotiations between the BMA GPs committee and NHS Employers, a £220m investment for 2016-17 will take into account rising GP practice expenses and is designed to result in a pay uplift of 1 per cent for GPs following years of decline. The GP contract announcement will mean no changes to QOF (quality and outcomes framework) thresholds or the number of points available for 2016-17, minimising unnecessary disruption for practices with a commitment to explore, among other possi...

Link between practice performance and emergency admissions for mental illness
Good-quality primary care has the potential to reduce emergency hospital admissions, but also to increase elective admissions if physical health problems are identified by regular health screening of people with SMIs. A new study aimed to test whether or not better-quality primary care, as assessed by the SMI quality indicators measured routinely in the quality and outcomes framework, is associated with lower rates of emergency hospital admissions for people with SMIs. The research also looked at the pattern for physical illness. (Source: NHS Networks)
