Bright light therapy versus physical exercise to prevent co-occurring depression in adolescents and young adults with attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder: a multicentre, three-arm, randomised controlled, pilot phase-IIa trial
Eur Arch Psychiatry Clin Neurosci. 2024 Apr 16. doi: 10.1007/s00406-024-01784-1. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTDepression is common in attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), but preventive behavioural interventions are lacking. This randomised controlled, pilot phase-IIa trial aimed to study a physical exercise intervention (EI) and bright light therapy (BLT)-both implemented and monitored in an individual, naturalistic setting via a mobile health (m-health) system-for feasibility of trial design and interventions, and to estimate their effects on depressive symptoms in young people with ADHD. Two hundred seven p...

Association between precarious employment and the onset of depressive symptoms in men and women: a 13-year longitudinal analysis in Korea (2009-2022)
CONCLUSIONS: Employment insecurity, inadequate income and lack of rights and protection may contribute to depressive symptoms. Therefore, PE serves as a significant social determinant of mental health among workers in Korea. Active policy efforts are warranted to improve the overall quality of employment in the workforce.PMID:38623756 | DOI:10.1017/S2045796024000258 (Source: Epidemiology and Psychiatric Sciences)

Multimorbidity and the Etiology of Schizophrenia
Curr Psychiatry Rep. 2024 Apr 16. doi: 10.1007/s11920-024-01500-9. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTPURPOSE OF REVIEW: A global study of multimorbidity in schizophrenia, especially of the association with physical conditions, might offer much needed etiological insights.RECENT FINDINGS: Our review suggests that life-style factors and medication related to schizophrenia are only part of the explanation of the increase in risk for cardiovascular, metabolic, pulmonary disorders, and some cancers. Positive associations with autoimmune disorders (with the exception of rheumatoid arthritis) and epilepsy are promising avenues of res...

Impact of COVID-19 restrictions on self-poisoning behaviour with mild analgesics in Danish youth
CONCLUSION: These findings indicate that the restrictions enforced during the second lockdown greatly impacted youth mental health, especially girls, leading to an 85% increase in self-poisonings. We hope for increased awareness of mental health in children and adolescents during possible future lockdowns.PMID:38625374 | DOI:10.1080/08039488.2024.2339433 (Source: Nordic Journal of Psychiatry)

Variation in opinions on coercion use among mental healthcare professionals: a questionnaire study
CONCLUSION: There is a high degree of variation in coercion use. This study suggests that this variation persists despite staff members being confronted with the same standardized situations. There is a need for evidence-based further guidance to minimize coercion in critical mental healthcare situations.PMID:38626028 | DOI:10.1080/08039488.2024.2341928 (Source: Nordic Journal of Psychiatry)

Association Between Cortical Thickness or Surface Area and Divergent Thinking in Patients with Bipolar Disorder
CONCLUSION: The findings indicate that divergent thinking involves cerebral structures for executive control, mental imagery, and visual processing in patients with BD, and the right prefrontal cortex might be the most crucial of these structures.PMID:38623725 | DOI:10.1017/neu.2024.17 (Source: Acta Neuropsychiatrica)

Peripheral HMGB1 is linked to O < sub > 3 < /sub > pathology of disease-associated astrocytes and amyloid
DISCUSSION: Astrocytes and peripheral myeloid cells are critical lung-brain axis interactors. HMGB1 loss in peripheral myeloid cells regulates the O3-induced DAA phenotype. These findings demonstrate a mechanism and potential intervention target for air pollution-induced AD pathobiology.HIGHLIGHTS: Astrocytes are part of the lung-brain axis, regulating how air pollution affects plaque pathology. Ozone (O3) astrocyte effects are associated with increased plaques and modified by plaque localization. O3 uniquely disrupts the astrocyte transcriptomic and proteomic disease-associated astrocyte (DAA) phenotype in plaque associat...

Longitudinal cerebral perfusion in presymptomatic genetic frontotemporal dementia: GENFI results
DISCUSSION: Cerebral perfusion is a potential biomarker for assessing genetic FTD and its genetic subgroups prior to symptom onset.HIGHLIGHTS: Gray matter perfusion declines in at-risk genetic frontotemporal dementia (FTD). Regional perfusion decline differs between at-risk genetic FTD subgroups . Hypoperfusion in the left thalamus is common across all presymptomatic groups. Converters exhibit greater right frontal hypoperfusion than non-converters past their expected conversion date. Cerebral hypoperfusion is a potential early biomarker of genetic FTD.PMID:38623902 | DOI:10.1002/alz.13750 (Source: The Journal of Alzheimers Association)

Anxiety in Alzheimer's disease rats is independent of memory and impacted by genotype, age, sex, and exercise
DISCUSSION: Concluding that while factors such as age, sex, AD genotype, and training status can impact anxiety levels in the TgF344-AD model, anxiety level did not impact memory performance.HIGHLIGHTS: Increased anxiety-like behavior in TgF344-AD rats does not correlate with declines in memory performance. Predictors of higher anxiety-like behaviors in the TgF344-AD rat include age, Alzheimer's disease (AD) genotype, and sex with female AD animals experiencing greater anxiety compared to female wild-type or male AD. Exercise training leads to decreased anxiety-like behaviors in the TgF344-AD rat.PMID:38624069 | DOI:10.100...

Correlates of Impairment and Growth in Families of Young Autistic Children
J Autism Dev Disord. 2024 Apr 16. doi: 10.1007/s10803-024-06339-w. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTThe purpose of this project was to investigate potential correlates of family life impairment in families of young autistic children. This project incorporated measures of specific child and parent challenges in addition to a commonly used unidimensional measure of autism characteristics. In this way, we could assess whether such challenges explain variance in family life impairment, and whether their inclusion diminish associations between autism characteristics and family life impairment. Cross-sectional data were collected f...

Youth adversity and trajectories of depression/anxiety symptoms in adolescence in the context of intersectionality in the United Kingdom
CONCLUSIONS: The detrimental effects of youth adversity pervade across intersectionality profiles. The extent to which these effects are moderated by intersectionality is discussed in terms of operational factors. The current results provide a platform for further research, which is needed to determine the importance of intersectionality as a moderator of youth adversity on the development of depression and anxiety symptoms in adolescence.PMID:38623689 | DOI:10.1017/S0033291724000795 (Source: Psychological Medicine)
