AbbVie: The Abbott Spinoff Arrives, But What’s Next?
It is now official – AbbVie exists. For those who may not recall, AbbVie is the so-called research-based pharma that has been spun off by Abbott Laboratories and features a portfolio of existing medicines, such as Humira and Synthroid, along with a pipeline of some 20 compounds in Phase II or Phase III development. One question, though, is what kind of shelf life will AbbVie actually have? On one hand, there is Humira, a biologic that is approved to treat rheumatoid arthritis, psoriasis and Crohn’s disease, where the average treatment penetration rate is below 20 percent, notes Damien Conover, who heads pharma ...

Is argan oil good for hair and skin
Noelle needs to know: I read your post regarding coconut oil penetrating hair. How about argan oil? It seems to be the new cosmetic hype, with several brands launching their “miraculous” argan oil-based hair treatment for 45 dollars or more.. (Ahem) Is there any kind of research providing evidence that argan oil can restore health and shine to the hair? They say that argan oil has been used for centuries by Moroccan women to restore skin, hair and nails. Does this Moroccan oil really work? The Right Brain’s oily answer: Could argan oil be the new coconut oil? Let’s take a look. What is argan oil? Argan oil is produ...

The self-fulfilling psoriasis flares
Writers are always being told “write what you know,” and obviously that is the basic and rather brilliant idea behind HealthTalk blogging. We live with these conditions and therefore are best qualified to write about life with whatever health condition, in my case psoriasis and psoriatic arthritis. The thing is that with chronic conditions we may have periods where nothing much is happening for us and our condition is either reasonably well managed or simply behaving itself, so what do we write about during those times? Usually I look to see what the support groups are talking about, what’s in the news, what ...

Update on OTC creams
Some time ago, I wrote about some OTC cream I bought while we were on holiday in the U.S.A. last year…and I thought it was about time for an update and a verdict. Initially, I didn’t see much by way of improvement to my psoriasis. However, my mother was delighted with the results when she tried it on a very stubborn patch of eczema on her leg that had not been responding to prescribed corticosteroid cream. In light of her success, I decided to persevere and I have to say that the skin is less scaly and less prone to flaking. The positives of this cream, in addition to the above, are the following: (Source: Life with Psoriasis)

I’m not hibernating, I’m just flaring!
I can hardly believe it has been so long since my last blog entry and I feel I should begin by wishing all HealthTalk bloggers and blog readers a belated but very Happy and Healthy New Year! I haven’t been hibernating, although with the weather we’ve had that is quite an appealing option, but fell foul of a very nasty and protracted flare. It seems this was linked to a persistent throat infection and the whole sorry mess pretty much ground my life and productivity to a halt. Throat infections seem to have a real impact on my psoriasis – both on the skin outbreaks and the flares of arthritis too. My skin was sore, cra...

Surveying the changes in psoriatic arthritis
I was surfing the web looking for anything of interest, as you do, and I came across the published results of a survey: “The study of impact of psoriasis/psoriatic arthritis on lifestyle choices” conducted by the PAA (Psoriatic Arthritis Alliance) in 2005. The main conclusions of the survey were that: • Early diagnosis and appropriate interventions remain key to long term positive outcomes • Education on psoriasis of healthcare providers is still perceived to be low • Awareness of psoriasis should be more visible and positive • Many people cope well and do not let the conditions affect their lifestyle choices ...

Psoriasis and your nails
It is wintery here in the U.K., and my hands are really feeling the difference. Not only is my skin generally drier, but my nails are worse too. The ridging is more noticeable, and the splitting is a nightmare. My fingers are sore enough form the arthritis, but the added dryness and the awful nails are enough to make me hide my hands in shame. I did find that using one of those multi nail files helped, you know the kind that is made from some type of poly nylon style covering, usually an oblong block file. Each of the four sides has a different function: filing, removing ridges, buffing and shining. The only problem I have...

Over the counter psoriasis lotions – have you tried them?
While we were in the States I was amazed at the wide range of over the counter products are available there. In one supermarket alone there were aisles of things we can either only get on prescription or can’t get at all. I was really interested to see that there are a number of creams available for sale aimed at psoriasis ‘sufferers.’ I must add here, as an aside, that I don’t actually like the term sufferer, although it probably technically is correct because we do suffer at time with this stuff…but it makes us sound more like victims and I hope that is not the case. But back to the tropic; ...

Does air conditioning make my psoriasis worse?
We travel quite a lot. And living on a small island as we do, that usually involves flying. I’m not sure why but every time we fly my elbows in particular get very sore and extra dry. Now I know this to be the case, and I always use extra moisturizer and or prescription creams prior to flying. What I use and how much/how often depends largely on the state of my skin at the time, but planning a complex trip – or even a simple one – can be quite stressful, and the results are often clear to see. Now I’m not really sure why my elbows should be more affected than the rest of me? I’m not the kind o...

The eyes have it…psoriasis, that is
I have psoriasis in my eyes. It forms on the underside of my eyelids and does its utmost to drive me crazy. Thankfully, it doesn’t itch like the rest of me, but it does feel like I have a whole handful of grit in my eye. This first came to light when I started methotrexate. Aside from all the usual charming side effects, I also experienced blisters in my mouth and eventually in my eyes. These horrid little things would chaff my eyes and would then burst filling my eyes with stinging liquid. They would be sore for an hour or two afterwards and then would clear up…only to return again with the next weekly injection. ...
