Antimicrobial and Probiotic Potential of Lactobacilli Associated with Traditional Fermented Beverages
In this study, we investigated the antimicrobial and probiotic potential of lactobacilli isolated from fermented beverages produced traditionally by ethnic groups in Northeast India. Out of thirty Lactobacilli, fifteen exhibited strong antimicrobial activity against Enterococcus faecium, Staphylococcus aureus, Klebsiella pneumoniae, Acinetobacter baumannii, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, and Enterobacter aerogenes with significant anti-biofilm and anti-quorum sensing activity. These isolates also showed characteristics associated with probiotic properties, such as tolerance to low pH and bile salts, survival in the gastric tract,...

Is there a link between appendicitis and the risk of diverticular disease?: a large German cohort study
ConclusionThis large-scale population-based study provides valuable insights into the interaction between appendicitis and diverticular disease. The study underscores the need for further research elucidating the underlying mechanisms linking appendicitis to diverticular disease. Probiotics emerge as a potential therapeutic avenue warranting exploration in the management of both conditions. These findings have important implications for clinical practice, highlighting the importance of considering appendicitis as a potential risk factor for diverticular disease, particularly in men. Further investigation is warranted to va...

Coadministration of doxorubicin with vitamin D3, Lactobacillus acidophilus, and Lactobacillus casei in the 4T1 mouse model of breast cancer: anticancer and enteroprotective effects
Med Oncol. 2024 Apr 9;41(5):111. doi: 10.1007/s12032-024-02346-0.ABSTRACTThe use of doxorubicin (Dox) in the treatment of breast cancer negatively affects the intestines and other tissues. Many studies have proven that probiotics and vitamin D3 have antitumor and intestinal tissue-protecting properties. To achieve effectiveness and minimize side effects, the current study aims to administer Dox together with probiotics (Lactobacillus acidophilus and Lactobacillus casei) and vitamin D3. Forty-two female BALB/c inbred mice were divided into six groups: Group 1 (Control), Group 2 (Dox), Group 3 (Dox and probiotics), Group 4 (...

Effect of Mixed Probiotics on Ovalbumin-Induced Atopic Dermatitis in Juvenile Mice
In this study, we aimed to assess the effectiveness of mixed probiotics as a treatment option for atopic dermatitis induced by ovalbumin. BALB/c juvenile mice were classified and divided into the ovalbumin group, mixed probiotic group (ovalbumin + LK), and control group. Except for the control group, all mice were sensitized with ovalbumin to establish a model of atopic dermatitis. The mixed probiotics were given by gavage for 14 days. Mice body weight, skin lesions, skin inflammation, ovalbumin-specific Ig, the number of Treg and CD103+DC, and the expression level of PD-1/PD-L1 were examined. The results showed that mixed...

Probiotics Pediococcus acidilactici GR-1 promotes the functional strains and remodels gut microbiota to reduce the Cr(VI) toxicity in a dual-chamber simulated intestinal system
Chemosphere. 2024 Apr 7:141927. doi: 10.1016/j.chemosphere.2024.141927. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTNumerous animal studies have demonstrated the toxicity of hexavalent chromium [Cr(VI)] and the bioremediative effects of probiotics on the composition and functions of gut microbiota. Since the precise mechanisms of Cr(VI) detoxification and its interactions with human gut microbiota were unknown, a novel dual-chamber simulated intestinal (DCSI) system was developed to maintain both the stability of the simulated system and the composition of the gut microbiota. Probiotic GR-1 was found to regulate intestinal gut microbiot...

Widely targeted metabolomics-based analysis of the impact of L. plantarum and L. paracasei fermentation on rosa roxburghii Tratt juice
Int J Food Microbiol. 2024 Mar 27;417:110686. doi: 10.1016/j.ijfoodmicro.2024.110686. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTRosa roxburghii Tratt fruits (RRT) exhibit extremely high nutritional and medicinal properties due to its unique phytochemical composition. Probiotic fermentation is a common method of processing fruits. Variations in the non-volatile metabolites and bioactivities of RRT juice caused by different lactobacilli are not well understood. Therefore, we aimed to profile the non-volatile components and investigate the impact of L. plantarum fermentation (LP) and L. paracasei fermentation (LC) on RRT juice (the contr...

Milk and < em > Lacticaseibacillus casei < /em > BL23 effects on intestinal responses in a murine model of colitis
Am J Physiol Gastrointest Liver Physiol. 2024 Apr 9. doi: 10.1152/ajpgi.00259.2023. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTProbiotic-containing fermented dairy foods have the potential to benefit human health, but the importance of the dairy matrix for efficacy remains unclear. We investigated the capacity of Lacticaseibacillus casei BL23 in phosphate-buffered saline (BL23-PBS), BL23-fermented milk (BL23-milk), and milk to modify intestinal and behavioral responses in a Dextran Sodium Sulfate (DSS, 3% w/v) mouse model of colitis. Significant sex-dependent differences were found such that female mice exhibited more severe colitis, g...
