Unexpected Paternity leave during internship
Hello everyone. I want to first thank you for taking the time to read this thread and to help share your insight/wisdom regarding the matter of paternity leave. I was accepted into an internship placement at a hospital located within NYC. Shortly after being accepted into the position, I found out that my wife was pregnant and that our baby girl's due date is set for the end of September. My internship began at the end of August, which only allowed me around 4 weeks before our baby girl is... Read more (Source: Student Doctor Network)

Calling off sick in Emergency Medicine
Currently an attending and approaching 9 weeks pregnant. The first trimester has been 24/7 nausea and exhaustion. I'm on unisom and b6, but still feel crappy. I've lost 5lbs. I'm struggling to hydrate and keep getting nosebleeds from vomiting. I have a stretch of single coverage night shifts coming up. My "morning" sickness has been mostly at night. During my last stretch of nights, I vomited on the last night (when I was 5 weeks). There is no back up at this place. It's me and 2 nurses... Read more (Source: Student Doctor Network)

Non-trad trying to apply this cycle
Hello I am a non-traditional student trying to apply this cycle, I was originally pre med in college. Life happened, and COVID happened so I really though I didn't want to go into medicine and did a detour with other jobs and interests. But my wife had severe complications during here pregnancy and delivery and it really made me realize that I still long for the idea of becoming a doctor. I am a low income URM (I know this does not matter anymore, but I still thought it was worth mentioning)... Read more (Source: Student Doctor Network)

Options for Emergency Physicians during pregnancy
My husband and I are about to start trying to conceive our first child. I'm worried about continuing to work in emergency medicine due to the stress, night shifts, long hours, potential exposure to diseases, and lack of back up at my single coverage place. Does anyone have advice? I'm considering doing a 911 telehealth job where EMS routes low-acuity complaints to telehealth rather than transporting to the ER. Does anyone have telehealth experience? Is the pay comparable? (Source: Student Doctor Network)

Pregnancy and children in Vet School
Hello, my spouse and I (same-sex couple) have been working on our family planning. Due to our ages and our family's ages, we are really hoping to have our first child within the next few years. I am hoping some people can share their experience having infants in vet school and/or carrying a pregnancy through vet school. Opinions are welcome! Would love to know what you think the best year would be to aim for, tips, etc. (Source: Student Doctor Network)

Do schools offer deferment?
I was just wondering if you guys have seen situations where a school has allowed someone who has been accepted into a program to defer to the next year and what were the reasons. I have been accepted to 2 programs and waitlisted at 2 programs. I would love to go this year however I just learned that my wife and I are pregnant and that the due date is in mid-August (first week of 3 of my programs). This is the best news we have ever gotten however the timing could not have been worst for... Read more (Source: Student Doctor Network)

Female pediatric dentists and pregnancy
In need of some insight. For pediatric female dentists (or general dentists) who are/were pregnant did you continue to administer nitrous to patients all throughout your pregnancies? I’m a GP in a pediatric heavy patient pool office and it will be very hard to avoid all nitrous due to the pediatric patients. We use isovac (dry shield) on all cases and my management is having the scavenging/lines checked. I also wear an N95 with a level 3 over it, but I’m aware the nitrous particles are... How long to take off for maternity leave?
Am currently pregnant & due in the last month of my PGY1 year. Will be a first time mom. My program offers 12 weeks (6wks paid, 6 wks unpaid) of maternity leave. Since I've never had a baby before, I'd love to know how long of a leave do you all suggest? I'm in FM residency. I want to take enough time off to properly take care of my baby & slowly recover. But I'd also like to not be completely rusty & out of touch with medicine when I return... or be really bored at home & regret taking too... Read more (Source: Student Doctor Network)
