Justine Siegemundin
Justine Siegemund (1636-1705), midwife, was the Google Doodle for today, 28th March 2023.  When young, she was misdiagnosed as pregnant when in fact she had a prolapsed uterus, and her experiences led her to train and practice as a midwife.  She was Court Midwife in Berlin, in which post she delivered royal babies, and was invited to write a training manual for other midwives, the first medical book in German to be written by a woman, published in 1690.  Searches in Cinahl and PubMed with variations of her name (Siegemundin, and different spellings of her first name) find just a handful of arti...

Er marriesTamar, but God kills him because he...

Imaging Technique Reveals Contraction Patterns During Labor
Researchers at the Eunice Kennedy Shriver National Institute of Child Health and Human Development have developed a new imaging technique called electromyometrial imaging (EMMI) which clinicians can use to create 3D maps of uterine contraction patterns during labor. These data are then combined to create 3D maps that reveal how contractions are initiated and spread throughout the uterus. The data will allow researchers to better understand the process of labor and help clinicians to d...

Death in Childbirth
I taught a course last year in global maternal mortality so I have some idea of what I ' m talking about here. Childbirth is dangerous for women because, for one thing, thanks to evolution giving us big brains, the baby ' s head is too big for the birth canal. However, there are other complications of pregnancy that can occur. In Europe in the 19th Century, as it became common for women to give birth in hospitals, infectious disease killed a lot of mothers, thanks to the doctors transferring pathogens on their unwashed hands and unsterile instruments. Many a family was bereaved by maternal death, but it has become rare in ...
