An LC-MS/MS-based method for the simultaneous quantification of melatonin, cortisol and cortisone in saliva
Anal Biochem. 2024 Feb 29:115496. doi: 10.1016/j.ab.2024.115496. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTDisturbances in the diurnal pattern are associated with several clinical and psychological conditions, including depression and fatigue. Salivary sampling for melatonin, cortisol and cortisone provides a non-invasive method for frequent sampling and obtaining biochemical insight into the diurnal pattern of individuals. Therefore, a new liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry-based method for the measurement of salivary melatonin, cortisol and cortisone was developed and validated. The method required 250 μl saliva, used i...

The Complications of Corticosteroid for Patients with Community-acquired Pneumonia: A Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis
CONCLUSIONS: Through our analysis, the use of corticosteroids can increase the risk of hyperglycemia for patients with community-acquired pneumonia. Further studies are required to be conducted to confirm the findings due to limited clinical trials.PMID:38430143 (Source: Alternative Therapies in Health and Medicine)

Ozone use in the treatment of subclinical mastitis in dairy cows
J Dairy Res. 2023 Nov;90(4):382-386. doi: 10.1017/S0022029923000808. Epub 2024 Feb 29.ABSTRACTThis research communication paper addresses the hypothesis that the use of therapeutic alternatives for mastitis, such as intramammary ozone, can cure the disease with lower costs and without harmful residues for human consumption and without formation of microbial resistance like the ones caused by indiscriminate use of antibiotics in dairy farms. The study was performed in 36 mammary quarters from 12 dairy cows with subclinical mastitis grade three. The experimental units were randomly assigned into four groups and each group re...

Clinical features and prognosis of systemic lupus erythematosus complicated by active cytomegalovirus infection: a retrospective cohort study
ConclusionIn SLE patients, plasma CMV DNA viral load seemed to have a higher value in the diagnosis of CMV disease; patients with CMV organ involvement, SLE multi-system involvement, and elevated hsCRP might have a higher risk of 3-month all-cause mortality; and patients with CMV organ involvement might have a higher risk of CMV recurrence within 3 months. Azathioprine and hydroxychloroquine overdose in Sj ögren’s syndrome patient with hypocalcemia: a case report
ConclusionHydroxychloroquine and azathioprine toxicity are considered rare, but it is likely to increase in frequency given the prevalence and increase in autoimmune diseases and the increasing usage of these drugs in treating such diseases. We found hypocalcemia as the presentation to this patient, which needs further investigation into the probable mechanism. Clinicians need to consider the unique effects of hydroxychloroquine and azathioprine poisoning and initiate appropriate emergency interventions to improve the outcomes in similar patients. Pattern and Predictors of Infection Among Patients With Rheumatological Disease on Immunosuppressive Medications: A Retrospective Study in a Tertiary Care Hospital in Bangladesh
Conclusion COVID-19 pneumonia, urinary tract infections, fungal infection, tuberculosis, herpes zoster, and community-acquired pneumonia were commonly occurring infections among patients receiving different immunosuppressive medications. Factors like poor nutritional status, presence of anemia, leucopenia, hypoalbuminemia, hyperglycemia, and hypovitaminosis D had a significant association with infection. Moreover, inadequate counseling of steroid side effects and history of daily intake of prednisolone (>10mg/day) were also significant factors associated with infection.PMID:38406079 | PMC:PMC10883793 | DOI:10.7759/cureu...

Severe Left Main Coronary Artery Stenosis and Aortic Regurgitation in a Patient Presenting with Takayasu Arteritis
Intern Med. 2024 Feb 26. doi: 10.2169/internalmedicine.3032-23. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTWe herein report the case of a 46-year-old woman with Takayasu arteritis (TA), severe stenosis in the left main coronary artery (LMCA), and severe aortic regurgitation. Prednisolone and tacrolimus were initiated as TA treatments. Two months after initiating medical therapy, the aortic regurgitation severity improved to a moderate grade, although there was no obvious improvement in LMCA stenosis. Thus, after confirming the resolution of inflammation, we performed coronary artery bypass grafting alone without any aortic valve interv...
