Risk of future stroke increased by hypertension during pregnancy
High blood pressure during pregnancy could dramatically raise a woman's lifetime risk of stroke, according to a study presented at the Canadian Stroke Congress. "We've found that women who had high blood pressure during pregnancy could be at higher risk of stroke, particularly if they had pre-eclampsia, which is a more severe form of high blood pressure," says Dr. Aravind Ganesh, a neurology resident at the University of Calgary. "The elevated risk of stroke could be as high as 40 per cent." Dr. Ganesh, along with Neha Sarna (medical student), Dr... (Source: Health News from Medical News Today)

Pre-eclampsia risk predicted with new test
There is currently no way to predict which first-time moms are at risk for high blood pressure during pregnancy, called pre-eclampsia. But researchers in the UK have discovered blood proteins that could forecast whether a woman in her first pregnancy is at risk for the condition Pre-eclampsia (PE), which accompanies protein in urine, can quickly develop into a life-threatening condition for both mother and baby. Often, the only cure is to deliver the baby prematurely, which carries risks of its own... (Source: Health News from Medical News Today)

A high-fat diet induces preeclampsia-like symptoms in pregnant rats
Preeclampsia is a relatively common pregnancy disorder, characterized by primary hypertension and proteinuria. In patients with severe preeclampsia, eclampsia can develop, causing nervous system symptoms and signs. In the clinic, some patients with preeclampsia suffer from eclampsia even with minimal blood pressure changes. Thus, the pathogenesis of hypertensive encephalopathy cannot fully explain the epilepsy-like attacks in eclampsia patients. We know that changes in neurotransmitter levels in the brain play an important role in epilepsy-like attacks... (Source: Health News from Medical News Today)

Pre-Eclampsia Poses Cerebral Palsy Risk For Premature And Small Babies
Exposure to pre-eclampsia is associated with an increased risk of cerebral palsy (CP) in newborns, if they are preterm or small at birth, suggests a study published today on bmj.com. Pre-eclampsia affects 3-5% of pregnant women and can lead to preterm delivery, prematurity, perinatal morbidity and mortality. Although preterm birth and low birth weight are associated with excess risk of CP, the causes remain largely unknown. Some studies have found an excess risk of CP in children born at term from mothers with pre-eclampsia while others have reported no association... (Source: Health News from Medical News Today)
