Plant as superhero during nuclear power plant accidents
(Iwate University, Japan) A collaborative study by a group of scientists from Iwate University, The University of Tokyo and Shimane University, Japan demonstrated for the first time that two ATP binding cassette proteins ABCG33 and ABCG37 function as potassium-independent cesium uptake carriers. Lithium pollution of a white dwarf records the accretion of an extrasolar planetesimal
We report the detection of lithium, sodium, potassium, and calcium in the atmosphere of the white dwarf Gaia DR2 4353607450860305024, which we ascribe to the accretion of a planetesimal. Using model atmospheres, we determine abundance ratios of these elements, and, with the exception of lithium, they are consistent with meteoritic values in the Solar System. We compare the measured lithium abundance with measurements in old stars and with expectations from Big Bang nucleosynthesis. (Source: ScienceNOW)

Extraction with an electric motor-driven handpiece may still cause subcutaneous emphysema - A case report
This article reported a case of SE around the paraorbital and submandibular regions through extractions of teeth 28 and 38. This 20-year-old man came to the emergency room at night with the major complaint of pain and discomfort during swallowing. Sudden swelling at his left face during extractions of teeth 28 and 38 three hours ago was mentioned. The original surgeon who performed the odontectomy was aware of the SE after removing the surgical drape and specific post-operation instructions were given as follows: immediate hospital care may be needed if the patient encountered difficulties in swallowing or any worsen compl...

" Platelets as a prognostic marker for sepsis: A cohort study from the MIMIC-III database. "
During sepsis, platelets dysfunction contributes to organ dysfunction. Studies on platelets dysfunction in the long-term prognosis of sepsis are lacking. The aim of this study was to assess the role of platelets in the long-term prognosis of sepsis patients.A total of 4576 sepsis patients were extracted from MIMIC III Database. Survival was analyzed by the Kaplan-Meier method. Univariate and multivariate cox analyses were performed to identify prognostic factors. Significant prognostic factors were combined to build a nomogram to predict 1 year overall survival (OS). The discriminative ability and predictive accuracy of th...

Resonant collisional shielding of reactive molecules using electric fields
Full control of molecular interactions, including reactive losses, would open new frontiers in quantum science. We demonstrate extreme tunability of ultracold chemical reaction rates by inducing resonant dipolar interactions by means of an external electric field. We prepared fermionic potassium-rubidium molecules in their first excited rotational state and observed a modulation of the chemical reaction rate by three orders of magnitude as we tuned the electric field strength by a few percent across resonance. In a quasi–two-dimensional geometry, we accurately determined the contributions from the three dominant angu...

Non-invasive electrolyte levels' measuring method can prevent sudden cardiac death
(Kaunas University of Technology) Researchers from Kaunas University of Technology (KTU), Lithuania came up with the idea on how to measure fluctuating blood potassium levels non-invasively, through electrocardiogram. The researchers claim that their method may become a digital biomarker in the future for managing electrolyte levels. This would be a huge step towards preventing potentially life-threatening conditions among people who suffer from chronic kidney disease. (Source: EurekAlert! - Biology)
