Courts Should Review Executive-Agency Interpretations of the First Amendment
Among the types of speech that the First Amendment protects is commercial speech, such as advertising. But commercial speech that’s false or misleading isn’t constitutionally protected: you may be liable for defrauding someone through various communications. But what is “false” or “misleading,” and who decides? The Federal Trade Commission brought claims against POM Wonderful—you may know them as the producer of various pomegranate beverages in distinctive curved bottles—for consumer deceptive advertising. The agency determined that some of POM’s health-supplement ads were misleading. But this decision wa...

Food and Cancer—A Complicated Relationship
Marian L. Tupy Cancer, we are told, lurks everywhere: popcorn, non-organic fruit, canned tomatoes, processed meats, farm-raised salmon, potato chips, foods (salted, pickled, and smoked), GMOs (of course), candy, artificial sweeteners, diet soda, alcohol, red meat; even white flour can kill you.   Enough already! In fact, a recent study by researchers at the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine contends that most occurrences of cancers are simply a result of bad luck. To wit, “Plain old bad luck plays a major role in determining who gets cancer and who does not, according to researchers who found that tw...

What Words With Friends Can Reveal About Your Personality
I started to play ‘Words With Friends‘ about 4 years ago, but really got into it when a good friend from the UK started playing soon after. I have no idea how many games we’ve played but it’s many hundreds over the years. Things can often get highly abusive and extremely childish in the chat if one of us thinks we are losing through bad luck rather than the other persons skill – which is all of the time. Over the years in playing hundreds of different players I have started to pick up on certain personality types.  I think that how people play ‘Words With Friends’ over a sustained period ...

Foods That Fight…Illness, That Is
By Amy Campbell That time of the year is upon us: the "holidays." It's not even Thanksgiving yet, but the stores are already filled with Christmas decorations and gifts. Holiday music is playing on radio stations. Holidays are fun, but this season can come with side effects, including colds and flu, heartburn, upset stomach, headaches, muscle aches, and fatigue. Medicine is often needed to treat these maladies, but if you're looking for something a little more natural and gentle, think, instead, about food. Food is medicine, too, and what better way to remedy your maladies and nourish your body at the same time? Colds and ...

Latest reading round-up
I start with a recommendation not from me. I was sent ‘The Light Between Oceans’ by M. L. Steadman and passed it on to my mother as I knew it would be a long time until I got around to it. After doing nothing but read it from the moment she opened it, my mother commands that you read it. Yes, all of you. She is raving about it to everyone. So. Do as you’re told. I believe there’s a lighthouse, and a baby. (I haven’t read it yet because she is lending my copy around friends and neighbours. It will probably be 2017 before I get it back.) I almost loved ‘Perfect’ by Rachel Joyce. It’s beautifully...

Both the SUP and CON groups took a daily multivitamin/mineral supplemen...
