Effect of the PCV 10 vaccination on community-acquired pneumonia hospitalisations after four years of its introduction into the Polish National Immunisation Programme: Follow-up study
CONCLUSIONS: Implementation of the PCV vaccination programme has effectively decreased the incidence of CAP hospitalisations, including children <2 years of age. The group that is most at risk of death are persons aged 60+. The results of our study can be useful in evaluating the vaccine efficacy and benefits, and they can be an essential part of public health policy. Effective prevention strategies for CAP should be implemented in different age groups.PMID:38641493 | DOI:10.1016/j.vaccine.2024.04.019 (Source: Vaccine)

The indirect costs of human papillomavirus-related cancer in Central and Eastern Europe: years of life lost and productivity costs
CONCLUSIONS: There is a high disease burden of HPV-related cancer-related deaths in the CEE region, with a large economic impact to society due to substantial productivity losses. It is critical to implement and reinforce public health measures with the aim to reduce the incidence of HPV-related diseases, and the subsequent premature cancer deaths. Improving HPV screening and increasing vaccination programs, in both male and female populations, could help reduce this burden.PMID:38638098 | DOI:10.1080/13696998.2024.2341572 (Source: Journal of Medical Economics)

Molecules, Vol. 29, Pages 1865: Influence of the Nitrogen Fertilization on the Yield, Biometric Characteristics and Chemical Composition of Stevia rebaudiana Bertoni Grown in Poland
„ski Stevia rebaudiana Bertoni is a plant native to South America that has gathered much interest in recent decades thanks to diterpene glycosides, called steviosides, which it produces. These compounds are characterised by their sweetness, which is 250–300 times higher than saccharose, and they contain almost no caloric value. Stevia is currently also grown outside the South American continent, in various countries characterised by warm weather. This research aimed to determine whether it is viable to grow Stevia rebaudiana plants in Poland, a country characterised by a cooler climate than the native reg...

Novel clades of tick-borne pathogenic nairoviruses in Europe
Infect Genet Evol. 2024 Apr 16;121:105593. doi: 10.1016/j.meegid.2024.105593. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTMembers of the Orthonairovirus genus (family Nairoviridae) include many tick-borne viruses of significant human and animal health impact, with several recently-documented pathogenic viruses lacking sufficient epidemiological information. We screened 215 adult ticks of seven species collected in Bulgaria, Georgia, Latvia and Poland for orthonairoviruses, followed by nanopore sequencing (NS) for genome characterization. Initial generic amplification revealed Sulina virus (SULV, Orthonairovirus sulinaense), for which an...

Development and validation of the Emotional Climate Change Stories (ECCS) stimuli set
Behav Res Methods. 2024 Apr 18. doi: 10.3758/s13428-024-02408-1. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTClimate change is widely recognised as an urgent issue, and the number of people concerned about it is increasing. While emotions are among the strongest predictors of behaviour change in the face of climate change, researchers have only recently begun to investigate this topic experimentally. This may be due to the lack of standardised, validated stimuli that would make studying such a topic in experimental settings possible. Here, we introduce a novel Emotional Climate Change Stories (ECCS) stimuli set. ECCS consists of 180 rea...

The attitude towards the forest and satisfaction with life of Polish students
by Anna Koprowicz, Robert Korzeniewicz, Wojciech Pusz, Marlena Baranowska The aim of the study is to determine the connection between the attitude towards the forest and life satisfaction of students. The study was conducted on a sample of 650 students from Polish universities using The Satisfaction With Life Scale and an original questionnaire measuring the approach to wards the forest–LAS scale. There are 3 subscales which measured: the perceived benefits from spending time in the forest; the degree of involvement in exploring the forest and working to its advantage; fears connected with the forest. The scale indicate...

Co-occurrence and cognitive basis of low language and low reading skills in children speaking a transparent language
AbstractWe investigated the comorbidity of low language and reading skills in 6- to 8-year-old monolingual Polish-speaking children (N = 962) using three different approaches: norming data to determine the prevalence of co-morbid difficulties, group comparisons of profiles on key cognitive-linguistic measures, and a case series analysis examining the frequency of single versus multiple deficits. We identified four groups of ch ildren based on their oral language and reading skills: children with low oral language skills alone, low reading skills alone, comorbid low language/reading skills, and typically developing chro...

The epidemiology of the most frequent cancers in Poland in 2015 –2021 and the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on cancer incidence
ConclusionsOur results show a significant decrease in the incidence rate of the most frequent cancers diagnosed in Poland in 2020 compared to 2019. Subsequently, in 2021 the increase of the incidence ratios was noted, most likely due to the gradual reduction of epidemic restrictions. (Source: Archives of Public Health)

Typical spelling errors of Grade 1 spellers of Polish: An exploratory study adapting the POMAS classification to the Polish orthography
AbstractThis paper presents the adaptation of the POMAS classification of spelling errors (Silliman et al., Developmental Neuropsychology 29:93 –123, 2006, Bahr et al., Journal of Speech, Language& Hearing Research 55:1587 –1599, 2012; International Journal of Bilingual Education and Bilingualism 18:73–91, 2015) to Polish orthography. We identified the most common phonological, orthographic, and/or morphological errors committed by Polish Grade 1 spellers based on a writing-to-dictation task. Some of the error typ es were included in the original POMAS; some we added, following the classification rationale, to ad...

Effect of composting and storage on the microbiome and resistome of cattle manure from a commercial dairy farm in Poland
This study examined how different cattle manure treatments, including composting and storage, affect its microbiome and resistome. The changes occurring in the microbiome and resistome of the treated manure samples were compared with those of raw samples by high-throughput qPCR for ARGs tracking and sequencing of the V3-V4 variable region of the 16S rRNA gene to indicate bacterial community composition. We identified 203 ARGs and mobile genetic elements (MGEs) in raw manure. Post-treatment reduced these to 76 in composted and 51 in stored samples. Notably, beta-lactam, cross-resistance to macrolides, lincosamides and strep...

Traditional Clinicopathological Biomarkers Still Determine Disease-Free and Overall Survival in Invasive Breast Cancer Patients: A Pilot Study
Conclusions: Our study provides essential information on the clinicopathological profile and future outcomes of early stage IBrC patients. Furthermore, the tumor diameter cut-off value of 1.6 cm discriminating between disease recurrence and those without disease progression patients represents an innovative direction for further research.PMID:38610786 | PMC:PMC11012512 | DOI:10.3390/jcm13072021 (Source: Clinical Breast Cancer)
