Osteoid Osteoma of the Talus Mimicking Pigmented Villonodular Synovitis in a 15-Year-Old Male: A Case Report
We report the case of a 15-year-old male with a subperiosteal osteoid osteoma of the talus, who was misdiagnosed with pigmented villonodular synovitis and operated through anterior ankle arthrotomy. A nodular lesion 1 cm in diameter with hard rubber consistency was removed from the dorsal aspect of the talar neck. The pathological specimens were consistent with subperiosteal osteoid osteoma. The patient's symptoms resolved rapidly in the early postoperative period. The patient remained asymptomatic at the 20th-month follow-up and the control MRI revealed no signs of recurrence. Atypical radiological and clinical presentati...

Foreword
When I first started as Consulting Editor in 2018, one of the first topics I selected was a “Trauma Update 2018.” Dr Justin Fleming was the Guest Editor on that particular issue, and I gave well-deserved recognition to Drs Jack Schuberth and George Gumann, who paved the way for many of our podiatric colleagues managing lower-extremity trauma in their communities. Nursing and allied health workforce in Australian public rheumatology departments is inadequate: a cross-sectional observational study
AbstractRheumatological conditions are complex and impact many facets of daily life. Management of people with rheumatological conditions can be optimised through multidisciplinary care. However, the current access to nursing and allied health professionals in Australia is unknown. A cross-sectional study of nursing and allied health professionals in Australian public rheumatology departments for adult and paediatric services was conducted. The heads of Australian public rheumatology departments were invited to report the health professionals working within their departments, referral pathways, and barriers to greater mult...

Utah flouts FDA with law greenlighting placental stem cell therapies
The state of Utah is challenging the authority of the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) with a new, unusually bold law that allows patients to receive unapproved placental stem cell “therapies.” Observers predict that the law, which takes effect on 1 May, could significantly undermine FDA’s authority to regulate drugs and other treatments. The new statute , passed almost unanimously by both houses of the Utah legislature in February and signed by Governor Spencer Cox (R) last month, declares that Utah health care providers “may perform a [placental] stem cell therapy that is not approved by [F...

Assessing equity in the uptake of remote foot temperature monitoring in a large integrated US healthcare system
ConclusionsRTM growth was concentrated in a small number of higher-resourced facilities, with evidence of lower enrollment among those who were Black and lived farther from specialty care. Future studies are needed to identify and address barriers to uptake of new interventions like RTM to prevent exacerbating existing ulceration and amputation disparities. (Source: PLoS One)

Diagnostic imaging of the diabetic foot: an EANM evidence-based guidance
CONCLUSION: These practical recommendations highlight, and should assist clinicians in understanding, the role of imaging in the diagnostic workup of diabetic foot complications.PMID:38532027 | DOI:10.1007/s00259-024-06693-y (Source: Molecular Medicine)

Pediatric Trauma
Pediatric foot and ankle trauma includes a range of injuries affecting the lower extremities in children, typically aged from infancy to adolescence. These incidents can arise from various causes, including sports-related accidents, falls, and high-velocity injuries. Due to the dynamic growth and development of bones and soft tissues in pediatric patients, managing these injuries requires specialized knowledge and care. Early diagnosis and appropriate treatment are crucial to ensure optimal recovery and prevent potential long-term consequences. Treatment depends on severity and type of injury but may involve a combination ...

Can routine assessment of older people ’s mental health lead to improved outcomes: A regression discontinuity analysis
ConclusionCase finding of depression in podiatry patients based on a GDS-15 score of 10 or more followed by a letter to their General Practitioner significantly reduced depression severity. Whether this applies to all older patients in primary care is unknown. Further research is required to confirm these findings. Regression discontinuity analyses could be prespecified and embedded within other existing research studies. (Source: PLoS One)

Preface
Over 20 years ago, both of us entered the operating room with a completely different landscape. There was an improved understanding of anatomic fixation of fractures and a widespread acceptance of open reduction and internal fixation principles. However, the superior results achieved by these techniques faced appropriate skepticism, which forced the orthopedic and podiatric community to continue to advance technology, research, and training. Primary Arthrodesis versus Open Reduction and Internal Fixation for Lisfranc Joint Fracture-Dislocations in Adults: A Systematic Review
CONCLUSIONS: We recommend primary arthrodesis over open reduction and internal fixation for adult Lisfranc injuries.PMID:38446576 | DOI:10.7547/21-232 (Source: Journal of the American Podiatric Medical Association)

Association of Demographic Characteristics and Laboratory Values in Diabetic Foot Infections Leading to Lower-Extremity Amputation
CONCLUSIONS: An admission WBC count may be used as a predictor of lower-extremity amputation level and outcomes in diabetic infections. Although a statistically significant difference was not found for CRP or HbA1c levels between amputation procedures and number of procedures performed, these values remain useful in managing lower-extremity infections in diabetic patients.PMID:38446563 | DOI:10.7547/21-187 (Source: Journal of the American Podiatric Medical Association)
