Retrospective Analysis of Radiographic Outcomes After Closing Base Wedge Osteotomy for Correction of Bunion Deformity
CONCLUSIONS: Although clinical concern persists for the development of postoperative elevatus with CBWO, this case series showed plantarflexion of the CBWO. The CBWO is a powerful yet stable procedure for severe bunion deformities and should be viewed as a viable alternative to the Lapidus procedure.PMID:38441966 | DOI:10.7547/21-079 (Source: Journal of the American Podiatric Medical Association)

Association Between Altmetrics and Traditional Bibliometrics in the Journal of the American Podiatric Medical Association and The Journal of Foot and Ankle Surgery
CONCLUSIONS: The results of this investigation show the utility and predictivity of alternative metrics in complementing traditional bibliometrics and encourage the promotion of publications through journal-specific social media.PMID:38441964 | DOI:10.7547/21-006 (Source: Journal of the American Podiatric Medical Association)

The Effect of the Lateral First Metatarsal Head Shape on Hallux Valgus in Forced Turnout in Pre-Pointe Female Ballet Dancers: A Pilot Study
CONCLUSIONS: Our findings suggest no association between the HAA and lateral first metatarsal head shape; however, HAA does increase when a dancer assumes forced turnout. The paper method demonstrated similar reliability to the photographic method and shows the potential for future use as a clinical tool in assessing hallux abducto valgus.PMID:38441963 | DOI:10.7547/21-129 (Source: Journal of the American Podiatric Medical Association)

Winograd Wedge Resection Matrixectomy versus Partial Nail Avulsion with Chemical Cautery: A Tertiary Institution's Clinical Outcomes and Proposed Triaging Protocol
CONCLUSIONS: From our study, we conclude that both techniques (WG-M and PNA-P) are able to achieve similar clinical outcomes, with the PNA-P procedure being less invasive and less resource intensive, and also achieving a shorter healing time.PMID:38441962 | DOI:10.7547/22-108 (Source: Journal of the American Podiatric Medical Association)

Lisfranc Injuries
Lisfranc injuries were thought to primarily occur during high-energy events, leading to a preference for fusion treatment; however, recent data have shifted this perspective by highlighting a greater occurrence of low-energy injuries and reshaping the focus on open reduction internal fixation. This multifaceted process is guided by various factors, including the nature of the injury, specific anatomic considerations, and the involved joints. Our overarching goal remains to achieve anatomic reduction, with flexibility in hardware fixation methods. In cases of comminution, bridge plating may be warranted, potentially followe...

Comparison of Two Techniques for Proximal Margin Analysis of Toe Amputations: a Retrospective Review
Toe amputations are a common podiatric procedure for treatment of osteomyelitis. Whether or not the surgeon obtains a surgical cure, thus resolving the infection, can be difficult to assess. Obtaining a proximal bone margin can assist the treatment team in deciding the duration of postoperative antibiotics, need for re-operation, and postoperative care. The two senior surgeons use different methods to analyze proximal bone margins. The first surgeon obtains a microbiologic culture from the remaining bone, either at the proximal phalanx or metatarsal head, following the removal of the toe to be reviewed for osteomyelitis. (...

Rearfoot and Ankle Dislocations
Subtalar dislocations, ankle dislocations, and total talar dislocations are high-energy injuries. As such, there may be associated osseous or soft tissue injuries that can be diagnosed with advanced imaging such as computed tomography (CT) or MRI. With closed injuries, closed reduction may require sedation or general anesthesia, flexion of the knee to release the tension of the gastrocnemius-soleus complex, distraction is applied, the deformity is accentuated, then the deformity is corrected. Open injuries are usually associated with a higher level of energy and a higher rate of infection. It is important to thoroughly irr...

Syndesmotic Injuries
Syndesmotic ankle injuries, though rare in isolation, are complex destabilizing injuries often accompanied by fractures. Misdiagnoses, particularly overlooking posterior malleolus fractures, are common in ankle sprains. Thorough physical examinations, emphasizing high fibular pain and anterior tibia palpation, aid in accurate diagnosis. Grading helps assess injury severity and guiding treatment. Initial imaging involves three ankle views, with stress radiographs enhancing accuracy. If conservative care fails, MRI reveals ligament and tendon damage. Physical therapy may suffice for functional instability; surgical intervent...

Soft Tissue Coverage for Foot and Ankle Trauma
Lower extremity trauma can result in extensive soft tissue loss, which can require a staged multispecialty approach. Flaps can be an excellent choice for significant soft tissue loss. A variety of variables goes into the selection of a flap including understanding what the recipient site needs, available donor sites, nature of trauma, and utilization of indices to predict limb salvageability in order to strategically select the correct flap option. A Method for Diabetic Wound Specific Insole Design, Manufacturing and Biomechanical Validation for Better Recovery
In this study, 3 types of ethylene-vinyl acetate have been utilized to optimize the off-loading performance for pre-determined early-stage diabetic foot ulcer scenarios by means of baropodometric plantar pressure analyses and finite element method for each gait phase. The total cost of the manufacturing for this study was reduced down to $10.26 and was performed in 24.6 minutes. In addition, the offloaded pressure was increased by 2.3 times while the volume of the off-loading geometry was increased 8.12 times based on the utilized foam polymer. Consequently, improved off-loading was obtained and a standard was proposed for...

Long-term Clinical and Radiographic Outcomes Following Surgical Treatment for Ankle Fracture-Dislocations: Do poor radiographic outcomes always matter?
Conclusion The results illustrated that although post-traumatic osteoarthritis rate was high for ankle fracture-dislocation patients, surgical treatment achieved excellent functional results. Even if advanced stages of ankle arthritis according to Takakura's classification developed, patients had satisfactory clinical and functional results.PMID:38407969 | DOI:10.7547/22-225 (Source: Journal of the American Podiatric Medical Association)
