Act on pay and help the NHS, staff and patients, say health unions
Unions representing more than a million staff working across the NHS have today (Tuesday) met with health secretary Steve Barclay to discuss the growing workforce crisis. At the Westminster meeting this morning, the unions made clear that without urgent government action on wages, experienced health workers would continue to quit their jobs, and the NHS struggle to attract new staff in sufficient numbers. Unions told the secretary of state that patient waits for treatment would carry on worsening, unless something was done about the dangerously low staffing levels affecting every part of the NHS.  Decent wages are ke...

Fee rise for stretched NHS workers is unfair and misjudged, says UNISON
Paramedics, occupational therapists, operating department practitioners and many other health professionals could see the fee allowing them to practise rise by an “unfair” 20% next year, warns UNISON today (Friday). In a consultation that opened this week, the Health & Care Professions Council (HCPC), which regulates 15 professions in the health sector, has proposed an increase in its compulsory annual registration fee from £98.12 to £117.74. UNISON says the rise is unfair and disproportionate, especially during the biggest income squeeze in a generation. The 2021 increase saw fees jump 9% from £90 to £98.12. I...

What to Know About Peripheral Artery Disease —and Its Connection to Diabetes
When we think of clogged arteries, most of us think about the heart. “But buildup of fatty plaques can happen in any artery, including those that carry blood away from the heart,” says Dr. Samuel Kim, a preventive cardiologist and lipidologist at Weill Cornell Medicine in New York. The arteries that branch out and feed into our arms and legs make up the bulk of what we call peripheral arteries. And the narrowing in these vessels is referred to as peripheral artery disease (PAD), a common condition in which the legs or arms don’t receive sufficient blood flow. “Interestingly, arteries in our legs and...

Delayed, disappointing pay rise will leave staff considering their futures, say health unions
Health unions representing more than a million NHS staff in England have reacted with dismay to the NHS pay rise of £1,400 announced today (Tuesday) by the government. UNISON head of health and chair of the NHS group of unions Sara Gorton said: “This is nowhere near what’s needed to save the NHS. “Demoralised and depleted health workers needed to know that ministers are serious about solving the staffing crisis and investing in the future. The way to do that was through a significant pay award. “With the pandemic barely behind us and the growing cost-of-living catastrophe, NHS staff, their bank ...

Government has ‘ made a big mistake ’ on pay and missed the chance to turn the NHS around
Commenting on the government’s announcement today (Tuesday) that NHS staff in England are to receive a pay rise of £1,400 this year, UNISON general secretary Christina McAnea said: “The government has made a big mistake. This short-sighted decision risks harming the UK’s most cherished institution beyond repair. “Ministers might have shifted their pay position a little, but nowhere near enough. This award is barely half the lowest level of inflation. The price surge shows no sign of easing and hikes to energy bills will wipe out the rise for almost everyone. “It’s unlikely the incr...
