Metabolic syndrome and risk of gastrointestinal cancers: an investigation using large-scale molecular data
Gastrointestinal cancer risk is influenced by the presence of metabolic syndrome [MetS]. However, previous epidemiological studies lacked full serological biomarker data for the classification of MetS and the interaction of MetS with germline cancer risk variants is unknown. Anti-TNF α vs thiopurines for the prevention of postoperative recurrence in Crohn’s disease: a meta-analysis of individual participant data
The superiority of anti-TNF α agents to thiopurines for the prevention of postoperative recurrence of Crohn’s disease (CD) after ileocolonic resection remains controversial. In this meta-analysis of individual participant data (IPD-MA), the effect of both strategies was compared and assessed after risk stratification. (Source: Clinical Gastroenterology and Hepatology)

We thank Dr Li and coworkers for their interest in our study1 and insightful comments. They raised the question of the feasibility of the self-expandable metallic stent in our study cohort. We understand that self-expandable metallic stent is preferable to a plastic stent (PS) in patients with malignant distal biliary obstruction because of its longer stent patency, especially in cases requiring a few months of neoadjuvant chemotherapy.2,3 However, we believe that PS remains another good alternative for initial drainage in some circumstances because of its cost-effectiveness. Serum carboxypeptidase activity and genotype-stratified CA19-9 to detect early-stage pancreatic cancer
Serum diagnostic markers of early-stage pancreatic ductal adenocarcinoma (PDAC) are needed, especially for Stage I disease. As tumors grow and cause pancreatic atrophy, markers derived from pancreatic parenchyma such as serum carboxypeptidase A activity (CPA) lose diagnostic performance. We evaluated, with CA19-9, serum CPA as a marker of early pancreatic cancer. (Source: Clinical Gastroenterology and Hepatology)

Electronic outpatient referral system for liver transplant improves appropriateness and allows first visit triage
Missed or inappropriate referrals of potential candidates for liver transplantation (LT) are common and traditional referral methods (tRs) do not allow for efficient triage. We investigated the effects on these issues of a website developed for electronic oupatient referral to LT (eRW-LT) (Source: Clinical Gastroenterology and Hepatology)

The pandemic and inextricable relationship of COVID-19 and nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) have raised worldwide concerns. Although there was no population-based cohort study, some studies indicated NAFLD plays a role in the outcome of COVID-19 and is an independent predictor of severe COVID-19.1-3 So we read with great interest the cohort study conducted by Yoo et  al4 regarding the effect of NAFLD on COVID-19-related outcomes.
