Brain tumor surgery in adults.
Magy Onkol. 2024 Mar 14;68(1):13-25. Epub 2023 Nov 12.ABSTRACTDespite the advanced medical and radiation therapy, the role of surgical resection of brain neoplasms still remains indisputable. The maximal safe resection of benign brain tumors may result in complete recovery of the patient. Surgery of malignant tumors can resolve mass effect, improve the neurological condition of the patient providing the possibility for further complex oncotherapy based on molecular level histopathology results. The advances in technical and multidisciplinary environment of brain tumor surgery facilitate more radical and safer resection res...

Pituitary tumours without distinct lineage differentiation express stem cell marker SOX2
ConclusionsOur study is the first to biologically characterise pituitary tumours WDLD. We demonstrate that these tumours exhibit a higher expression of the stem cell marker SOX2 compared with other lineage-differentiated tumours, suggesting possible involvement of stem cells in their development. The impact of surgeon's academic leave on surgical outcomes for endoscopic transsphenoidal resection of pituitary tumors
CONCLUSIONS: Academic leave had no negative impact on most surgical outcomes for endoscopic transsphenoidal resection of pituitary tumors. Moreover, a trend toward shorter operative times and length of hospital stays was noted for patients receiving surgery immediately after surgeon's return from leave.PMID:38455343 | PMC:PMC10915428 | DOI:10.21037/gs-23-347 (Source: Hand Surgery)

Central hyperthyroidism due to an ectopic TSH-secreting pituitary tumor: a case report and literature review
Ectopic thyroid-stimulating hormone (TSH)-secreting tumors are extremely rare, with only 15 reported cases in the literature. Herein, we described a 60-year-old female patient with thyrotoxicosis and elevated or unsuppressed levels of TSH. Family history and laboratory and genetic tests did not support a diagnosis of resistance to thyroid hormone (RTH). Given the unsuppressed TSH, TSH-secreting tumor was suspected, and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) of the pituitary gland was performed. Surprisingly, the MRI scans revealed a nodule in the nasopharynx rather than a pituitary tumor in the sella region. Further evaluation u...

A novel pathogenic variant in TDP2 causes spinocerebellar ataxia autosomal recessive 23 accompanied by pituitary tumor and hyperhidrosis: a case report
AbstractTDP2 gene encodes tyrosyl DNA phosphodiesterase 2, an enzyme required for effective repair of the DNA double-strand breaks (DSBs). Spinocerebellar ataxia autosomal recessive 23 (SCAR23) is a rare disease caused by the pathogenic mutation of TDP2 gene and characterized by intellectual disability, progressive ataxia and refractory epilepsy. Thus far, merely nine patients harboring five different variants (c.425  + 1G >  A; c.413_414delinsAA, p. Ser138*; c.400C >  T, p. Arg134*; c.636 + 3_ 636 + 6 del; c.4G >  T, p. Glu2*) in TDP2 gene have been reported. Here, we describe the tenth pa...

Relevance of mutations in protein deubiquitinases genes and TP53 in corticotroph pituitary tumors
ConclusionsWe confirmed high prevalence of USP8 mutations and low incidence of USP48 and TP53 mutations. Changes in protein deubiquitinases genes appear to be favorable prognostic factors in CD. TP53 mutations are rare, occur in both functioning and silent tumors and are related to poor clinical outcome in CD. (Source: Frontiers in Endocrinology)

Clinical study on the selection of endoscopes and microscopes for transsphenoidal surgery of non-aggressive pituitary macroadenoma and microadenoma and the influencing factors of hyposmia after endoscopic transsphenoidal surgery
ConclusionMicrosurgery and endoscopic surgery are suitable surgical treatments for nonaggressive microadenomas and macroadenomas. The total tumor removal and postoperative hormone remission rates of the two surgical methods were approximately the same. However, the microsurgery group had a shorter operation time, less intraoperative blood loss, faster olfactory function recovery, and a lower average operation cost. The position of the nasal septal mucosal flap incision was a risk factor for hyposmia at 3 months postoperatively. Hyposmia is less likely to occur when the superior edge of the nasal septal mucosal flap incis...

Multi-omics Investigations in Endocrine Systems and Their Clinical Implications
Adv Exp Med Biol. 2024;1443:187-209. doi: 10.1007/978-3-031-50624-6_10.ABSTRACTInnovative techniques such as the "omics" can be a powerful tool for the understanding of intracellular pathways involved in homeostasis maintenance and identification of new potential therapeutic targets against endocrine-metabolic disorders. Over the last decades, proteomics has been extensively applied in the study of a wide variety of human diseases, including those involving the endocrine system. Among the most endocrine-related disorders investigated by proteomics in humans are diabetes mellitus and thyroid, pituitary, and reproductive sys...
