Daring ‘James Bond’ mission to drill Antarctic ices cores could reveal future of sea level rise
The helicopter hovered overhead, whipping up snow. Shielding his face, Peter Neff grabbed the dangling cargo load and guided it to the Antarctic ice. The helicopter sped back to the South Korean icebreaker RV Araon , 20 kilometers away, to fetch more gear. One trip down, 17 more to go, thought Neff, a polar glaciologist at the University of Minnesota (UM) Twin Cities. Time was ticking away on this day in January. In the best-case scenario, Neff and his team would have just 10 days to drill ice cores on Canisteo, a peninsula on the west coast of Antarctica—and a blizzard was already looming. Ever...

It's OK to move! Effect of a brief video on community confidence in activity despite back pain: A randomised trial
CONCLUSION: Participants who viewed a brief video intervention reported a very small difference in confidence to become active despite low back pain, compared with no intervention. The difference may lack clinical relevance.PMID:38635937 | DOI:10.2519/jospt.2024.12412 (Source: Health Physics)

Raman Characterization of Plastics: A DFT Study of Polystyrene
This study addresses this gap by using theoretical calculations to generate ab initio spectra for polystyrene, a reference material. The aim is to explain the origins of the spectral peaks and their consistency across various compositions and structures using linear ordered polymeric and finite amorphous models. The CRYSTAL package is employed to obtain full Raman spectra based on a careful benchmark of computational settings. While some peaks are present across all spectra and can serve for calibration, others exhibit structure-dependent behavior, enabling polymer identification. We conclude that Raman spectroscopy is a w...

Deep learning-based optimization of field geometry for total marrow irradiation delivered with volumetric modulated arc therapy
CONCLUSIONS: The generated field geometries were clinically acceptable and adequate, even for an MP with high level of expertise in TMI/TMLI. Incorporating the knowledge of the MPs into the development cycle was crucial for optimizing the models, especially in this scenario with limited data.PMID:38634859 | DOI:10.1002/mp.17089 (Source: Health Physics)

The impact of advancing the standard of care in radiotherapy on operational treatment resources
CONCLUSION: The clinical implementation of hypofractionated treatment regimens has successfully reduced the radiotherapy workload and operational treatment hours required to treat patients. This analysis describes the impact of changes to the standard of care on institutional resources.PMID:38634814 | DOI:10.1002/acm2.14363 (Source: Journal of Applied Clinical Medical Physics)

Evaluation and mitigation of deformable image registration uncertainties for MRI-guided adaptive radiotherapy
CONCLUSIONS: Among the three MIM DIR algorithms, MIM-CC shows the smallest errors in terms of MDA and DSC but exhibits significant Jacobian uncertainties in the interior regions of abdominal organs. The hybrid FEM technique effectively mitigates the Jacobian uncertainties in these regions.PMID:38634799 | DOI:10.1002/acm2.14358 (Source: Journal of Applied Clinical Medical Physics)

DIMOND: DIffusion Model OptimizatioN with Deep Learning
Adv Sci (Weinh). 2024 Apr 18:e2307965. doi: 10.1002/advs.202307965. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTDiffusion magnetic resonance imaging is an important tool for mapping tissue microstructure and structural connectivity non-invasively in the in vivo human brain. Numerous diffusion signal models are proposed to quantify microstructural properties. Nonetheless, accurate estimation of model parameters is computationally expensive and impeded by image noise. Supervised deep learning-based estimation approaches exhibit efficiency and superior performance but require additional training data and may be not generalizable. A new DIf...
