Hospital care in the first 10 years of life of children with congenital anomalies in six European countries: data from the EUROlinkCAT cohort linkage study
Conclusions Children with a congenital anomaly consume a significant proportion of hospital care resources. Priority should be given to public health primary prevention measures to reduce the risk of congenital anomalies. (Source: Archives of Disease in Childhood)

Towards evidence-based medicine for paediatricians
What could it be? It is often the case we would like to know what the chances of different types of diagnosis are, or the chance of a scan finding something or some things with a presentation. These types of questions can be answered in an ‘evidence-based’ way, but they rarely are even thought about let alone addressed. Their appraisal should follow the same model as others; does the paper produce valid findings? Are they meaningful and important? How far is the paper from the population or patient I am thinking of—too far to be helpful? Validity is best gained from an appropriate population, evaluated wi...

Assessment of visual fatigue in SSVEP-based brain-computer interface: a comprehensive study
AbstractFatigue deteriorates the performance of a brain-computer interface (BCI) system; thus, reliable detection of fatigue is the first step to counter this problem. The fatigue evaluated by means of electroencephalographic (EEG) signals has been studied in many research projects, but widely different results have been reported. Moreover, there is scant research when considering the fatigue on steady-state visually evoked potential (SSVEP)-based BCI. Therefore, nowadays, fatigue detection is not a completely solved topic. In the current work, the issues found in the literature that led to the differences in the results a...

Development of an Interpretable Deep Learning Model for Pathological Tumor Response Assessment After Neoadjuvant Therapy
CONCLUSION: This work illustrates deep learning's potential for assisting pathological response assessment. Spatial heatmaps and patch examples provide intuitive explanations of model predictions, engendering clinical trust and adoption (Code and data will be available at https://github.com/WinnieLaugh/ESCC_Percentage once the paper has been conditionally accepted). Integrating interpretable computational pathology could help enhance the efficiency and consistency of tumor response assessment and empower precise oncology treatment decisions.PMID:38632527 | PMC:PMC11022344 | DOI:10.1186/s12575-024-00234-5 (Source: Biological Procedures Online)

Safety and efficacy of thalidomide in treatment of gastrointestinal bleeding secondary to angioectasias: a systematic review and meta-analysis
DISCUSSION: In patients with angioectasias-related refractory/recurrent GIB, the use of thalidomide results in significantly decreased bleeding risk and may play a role in the management of such patients.PMID:38629130 | DOI:10.1080/00365521.2024.2342404 (Source: Scandinavian Journal of Gastroenterology)

Radiographic Outcomes in Paediatric Bronchiectasis and Factors Associated with Reversibility
CONCLUSIONS: This first large cohort confirms bronchiectasis in children is often reversible with appropriate management. Younger aged children and those with lesser radiographic severity at diagnosis were most likely to achieve radiographic reversibility whilst those with PsA infection were least likely.PMID:38631023 | DOI:10.1164/rccm.202402-0411OC (Source: American Journal of Respiratory and Critical Care Medicine)

Metabolic and ultrastructural renal changes in adult Wistar rats fed by a cafeteria diet
CONCLUSIONS: The intake of lipids and simple carbohydrates were found to be associated with alteration in the glomerular ultrastructure. However, more studies are needed to evaluate not only the effects of high-protein and high-fat diets on components of the glomerular filtration barrier, but also renal physiology.PMID:38629653 | PMC:PMC11020636 | DOI:10.1590/acb392224 (Source: Acta Cirurgica Brasileira)

Radiation dose reduction of 50% in dynamic myocardial CT perfusion with skipped beat acquisition: a retrospective study
CONCLUSION: Skipping every second beat acquisition during dynamic myocardial CTP appears feasible and may result in a radiation dose reduction of 50%. Diagnostic performance does not decrease after removing 50% of time points in dynamic sequence.PMID:38630492 | DOI:10.1177/02841851241240446 (Source: Acta Radiologica)

One generation apart: Individual income and life expectancy in two Swedish cohorts born before and after the expansion of the welfare state
CONCLUSIONS: Compared with a period approach to life expectancy trends, the cohort approach highlights the stagnation of mortality at the lowest income groups for men and the rapid emergence of a mortality gradient for women. Future research on health inequalities in welfare states should consider underlying factors both from a cohort and period perspective.PMID:38627923 | DOI:10.1177/14034948241246433 (Source: Scandinavian Journal of Public Health)

The utility of cone-beam computed tomography and multislice computed tomography scan for the evaluation of invasion versus erosion by mandibular squamous cell carcinoma as viewed on medical PACS
DISCUSSION: CBCT provides meaningful data that may be useful in identifying bony involvement in patients with mandibular squamous cell carcinoma. The utility in delineating erosion versus invasion is limited.PMID:38628331 | PMC:PMC11018060 | DOI:10.1080/08998280.2024.2308477 (Source: Baylor University Medical Center Proceedings)

A Case of Adult-onset Still's Disease (AOSD) with Gastrointestinal Lesions
Intern Med. 2024 Apr 16. doi: 10.2169/internalmedicine.3412-23. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTA 51-year-old woman with fever was admitted to our hospital. A computed tomography (CT) scan showed thickened colonic walls. Colonoscopy revealed erosion in the ileum and colon. Adult-onset Still's disease (AOSD) was diagnosed due to a subsequent sore throat and skin rash. Following AOSD treatment, methylprednisolone pulse therapy, followed by prednisolone and cyclosporine, was initiated. Despite achieving a temporary improvement, relapse occurred with fever, abdominal pain, with worsening CT and endoscopic findings. The reappeara...

Surgical management of a case of non-resolving bullous retinal detachment due to probable Vogt-Koyanagi-Harada syndrome
Eur J Ophthalmol. 2024 Apr 17:11206721241247582. doi: 10.1177/11206721241247582. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTA 45-year-old male with Vogt-Koyanagi-Harada (VKH) syndrome presented with vision loss in his right eye after discontinuing treatment during the COVID-19 pandemic. He was found to have bullous retinal detachment (RD) in the right eye and was started on subcutaneous adalimumab with oral corticosteroid following three doses of pulse corticosteroid. But when RD did not resolve after 4 months of treatment and ultrasound B scan showed bullous RD with retino-retinal adhesion, he was planned for surgical intervention. Du...

Late Outcomes of Porcine and Pericardial Bioprostheses after Mitral Valve Replacement in 1162 Patients
CONCLUSIONS: We demonstrate similar rates of 10-year survival and structural deterioration with porcine and pericardial bioprosthetics in mitral valve replacement. This study suggests a lack of major improvement in durability of mitral bioprosthetic valves over time. Failure mode may have greater influence on surgeon decision-making of valve choice.PMID:38631662 | DOI:10.1016/j.athoracsur.2024.04.002 (Source: The Annals of Thoracic Surgery)
