Exploring gender disparities in the disease and economic tobacco-attributable burden in Latin America
The objective of this study was to explore the differences in tobacco-attributable disease and economic burden between men and women in Argentina, Brazil, Chile, Colombia, Costa Rica, Ecuador, Mexico, and Peru.METHODS: We used a previously validated economic model to quantify the impact of tobacco-related illnesses, including morbidity, mortality, healthcare costs, productivity losses, informal care expenses, and DALYs, by gender and age. We utilized data from national surveys, records, studies, and expert opinions to populate the model.RESULTS: In 2020, there were 351,000 smoking-attributable deaths. Men accounted for 69%...

Who Transmits Tuberculosis to Whom: A Cross-Sectional Analysis of a Cohort Study in Lima, Peru
CONCLUSIONS: This study identifies men, young adults, former prisoners, alcohol consumers, and smokers as priority groups for targeted interventions. Innovative strategies are needed to extend tuberculosis screening to social groups like young adults and prisoners with limited access to routine preventive care.PMID:38416532 | DOI:10.1164/rccm.202307-1217OC (Source: American Journal of Respiratory and Critical Care Medicine)

Management of primary anorectal mucosal melanoma during the COVID-19 pandemic
We present a case of a 77-year-old Peruvian who was eventually diagnosed with this cancer during the COVID-19 pandemic, which complicated her treatment and allowed the cancer to spread. Her treatment included abdominoperineal resection, bilateral pelvic lymphadenectomy, left internal iliac vein raffia and end colostomy, followed by 3D radiation therapy (50 Gy, 25 sessions) and systemic treatment with nivolumab, all of which were well tolerated. The patient was alive as of 20 August 2023, having survived for more than 3 years since the onset of symptoms.PMID:38414935 | PMC:PMC10898915 | DOI:10.3332/ecancer.2023.1610 (Source...

Digital health and the promise of equity in maternity care: A mixed methods multi-country assessment on the use of information and communication technologies in healthcare facilities in Latin America and the Caribbean
CONCLUSION: Digital health for maternity care provision relied on commonly available technology and did not necessitate highly sophisticated systems, making it a sustainable and replicable strategy. However, disparities in access to digital health remain and many facilities in rural and remote areas lacked connectivity. Use of ICTs in maternity care depended on countries' long-term commitments to achieving universal health and digital coverage.PMID:38412170 | PMC:PMC10898739 | DOI:10.1371/journal.pone.0298902 (Source: Rural Remote Health)

The surface of leaves and fruits of Peruvian cacao is home for several Hannaella yeast species, including the new species Hannaella theobromatis sp. nov
Antonie Van Leeuwenhoek. 2024 Feb 27;117(1):43. doi: 10.1007/s10482-024-01936-2.ABSTRACTAs part of a long-term study aiming to isolate and identify yeast species that inhabit the surface of leaves and fruits of native fine-aroma cacao in the department of Amazonas, Peru, we obtained multiple isolates of Hannaella species. Yeasts of the genus Hannaella are common inhabitants of the phyllosphere of natural and crop plants. On the basis of morphological, and physiological characteristics, and sequence analysis of the D1/D2 domains of the large subunit rRNA gene (LSU) and the internal transcribed spacer region (ITS), we identi...

Triatoma infestans (Hemiptera: Reduviidae) Population Genetics: What Have We Learned from Microsatellites?
AbstractPurpose of ReviewThe genetic structure of insect vectors offers valuable insights for identifying panmictic units, reinfestation sources, and minimal intervention units in vector control programs. This review highlights key findings on the genetic structure ofTriatoma infestans populations using microsatellites across various geographic scales and landscapes.Recent FindingsMicrosatellites have been employed to explore the genetic structure ofT. infestans across Argentina, Bolivia, Paraguay, Brazil, and Peru. Research has focused on understanding genetic structure, assessing the impacts of short and long-distance mi...
