Misight
So My 12 yo kid was recommended Misight for his nearsightedness. I did some research and almost all recommendations online are from optometrists selling the product (red flag #1). Also, improvement is in the 20-50% range so projection without is -4, and with is -2 to -3. From a practical standpoint, doesn't make much of a difference. Expense is somewhat high too and from what I understand, most of the $$$ goes to the optometrists pocketbook. Talked to our pediatrician, who never heard... Read more (Source: Student Doctor Network)

Has anyone here gone non-clinical?
So I’ve been feeling a little burned out in general pediatrics. We see 27-30 patients a day with forms, patient calls, and labs to deal with in between, work two weekends a month, take evening phone call one a week and those 9-11 hours at work feel like a sprint, I barely get 10-15 minutes to eat my lunch. Several docs have left my practice due to the workload. I interviewed at other gen peds jobs in my area but they don’t seem much better and I don’t want to be a hospitalist. I’ve... RSV Vaccine
Strong RSV vaccine data lifts hopes after years of futility New research shows vaccinating pregnant women helped protect their newborns from the common but scary respiratory virus called RSV that fills hospitals with wheezing babies each fall. apnews.com Interesting news. An effective RSV vaccine after so many years. One has to wonder 1) how this will change seasonal viral patterns and 2) if ever there will be vaccine fatigue. The latter maybe won’t happen but I do wonder if people are going to continually sign up for multiple booster shots for v...

CSUDH OTD Applicants 2022
Hello! I haven't seen any threads or come across anyone else applying to CSUDH's OTD program this cycle, so I figured I'd start one! Would be nice to see if there's anyone else also applying! STATS: Cumulative GPA: 3.3 (From a UC) Prerequisite GPA: 4.0 (Half taken at CC's and half during undergrad) Observation Hours: 120 in a school district, also shadowed at other settings for about 5 hours each just to get a feel (SNF, pediatric private practice, hospital) Work/Volunteer Experience... Inability to find Pediatric (and ICU) landing spots
Those of you that work in community hospitals surely know the pain of making dozens of calls, begging transfer coordinators to accept your dying tertiary/specialty patients who are lingering in your overly full community EDs for hours (days…). Which explains why I got 4 different texts today asking if I was the author of the above mentioned text. No, I’ll have you know my text-rants are fine works of literary genius, mixing the tone of Faulkner, the ironic cynicism and obscure... Read more (Source: Student Doctor Network)

What specialty should I pursue? please advise a lost 3rd year!
HELP! I'm looking for advice. I'm in my 3rd rotation of 3rd year and suddenly I'm so confused about what direction to go for residency. Getting ready to start this year, Psych was at the top of my list. Actually really Family med/Psych or the triple board for pediatric/adolescent psych was what I wanted to do. What I really dreaded and was 100% sure I did not want to do is surgery and was pretty sure I didn't want to do IM except maybe I was interested in endocrinology. Now I'm 2/3... Adult ICU vs peds ICU (procedures, pathology, etc.)
Peds-trained here, currently in pediatric ICU training. Hearing a lot more about individuals that do both peds and adult ICU ultimately. Curious as to what types of pathology and procedures adult ICU has less exposure to when compared to peds ICU? In peds, something I think sets us apart is the complex congenital heart post-op patients. For us, we also do a fair amount of intubations > peripheral A-lines > CVLs > fem A-lines > chest tubes. It appears that adult CCM does essentially... Read more (Source: Student Doctor Network)

What salary to expect for pediatric dentistry?
Currently a peds resident, I’m wondering if there is any data on salary ranges for peds? What’s a normal starting and what can you get up to? What are most peoples schedules like? (Source: Student Doctor Network)

Alternate Site for PICU Fellowship Training
Hey all, For some PICU fellowship programs, you rotate for a few months at a hospital that has something they don’t have at their primary training site (e.g. MGHfc doing CICU at Boston Children’s, UChicago doing CICU at Oak Lawn, UBuffalo doing CICU at UPMC). While this is great for training, I’m curious as to how long of a way this goes when looking for jobs/further fellowship training in cardiac intensive care? I’m unsure if this model is beneficial or disadvantageous. Would one be more... Read more (Source: Student Doctor Network)

Questions for pediatric residents at Yale-New Haven pediatric program
I've been really interested in pediatric dentistry for a little while now, namely, working on patients with disabilities. Can anyone shed some light on the program and some of the qualities they are looking for in an applicant? Any insight would be appreciated. (Source: Student Doctor Network)

NYU Langone Pediatric Dentistry- insights?
Any current or past residents at any NYU Langone sites (especially CA or MA sites) can chime in on their program? I feel like there is generally little information about these programs on here leaving many of us wondering about them! Some questions I have but feel free to add more: 1. How many patients do you see daily? 2. What is your OR/sedation experience like? 3. What are the didactics like (read that NYU Langone does some sort of virtual didactics with all residents?) 4. How many FT... Read more (Source: Student Doctor Network)

Verified Hours
Hi all, I'm just finishing up inputting my observation hours in and am not certain what to do. I have over 1000 hours at an outpatient clinic, and another 40 hours at a pediatric outpatient clinic. I have been looking really hard for inpatient settings but in the greater Seattle area where I live hospitals, rehab facilities, and nursing homes are still not accepting volunteers due to COVID. However, I do have a PT at a hospital who agreed to take me in for shadowing once restrictions are... Read more (Source: Student Doctor Network)

Need help picking MPH programs
Hi everyone, I am planning on applying to MPH programs but I am a little late to the game. I was unsure on how many schools to apply to and where I should apply to maximize my chances. I was pre-med so a lot of my undergrad experiences are leaning towards clinical. Undergraduate School/School type: UCLA 2021 Undergrad GPA: ~3.7 Major/minor: Psychology and Biology No GRE Experience/research: -Currently working as a full-time medical assistant in a pediatric pulmonary clinic but I also... White noise machines?
Are you guys aware of literature on these? I tried to look but couldn’t find much. Are they recommended for infants/babies? I see they are very popular these days but worry about the child becoming reliant on them or effects on ear development if they’re on all night. Any thoughts on these? Thx (Source: Student Doctor Network)
