How Many Pounds Did You Get for Christmas?
How can anyone not gain weight during the holiday season? Starting with the national binge day, Thanksgiving, the country seems to be in a whirlwind of feasting and drinking. Or at least it seems that way... Stores typically selling shoes or sheets now feature shelves full of imported cakes, candies, nuts, jams, processed meats and cheeses all seemingly encased in hard to remove plastic wrap, as well as fancy liquors whose bottles resembling perfume jars. Going into a home goods store the other day in search of a potato grater (mine seems to have disappeared), I had to avert my eyes from these food displays, feeling my blo...

25 Tips for Living With Diabetes
This holiday season I'm sharing the gift of tips -- real tips from real people living with diabetes. Recently I was approached by a publisher to write a book of diabetes tips from medical professionals. Since those already exist, and most medical professionals don't live with diabetes, I thought how much better to gather tips from people who actually do. Alas, the publisher disagreed, so there won't be a patient tips book, but here's my patient tips list. Some of these tips, and plenty more, are in my books. Each of these come from diabetes friends, colleagues, peers and me. These tips are in no particular order, and...

How To Have A Paleo Thanksgiving
By Angela Haupt for U.S. News The pilgrims -- or the cavemen? On Thanksgiving, paleo dieters honor both. That means a holiday feast revolving around meat, fish, poultry, fruits and veggies -- with no refined sugar, dairy, legumes or grains. While that's problematic for Thanksgiving staples like bread stuffing, a few tweaks can save the turkey-filled day. "Almost any traditional Thanksgiving dish can be modified to become paleo," says registered nurse Katy Haldiman, health director of the Paleo Movement Magazine. Here are menu ideas for your paleo Thanksgiving. Appetizers Haldiman ticks off protein-heavy appetizer ideas: ...

Elevate Your Tailgate With These Healthier Game Day Favorites
If you're like me, and love game day snacks as much as sacks, you're not alone. Many sports fans fess up to enjoying football food more than the game. Problem is, typical fan fare like chips and dip, burgers and brats, pizza, wings and beer can easily add up to more than a day's worth of calories and several days' worth of saturated fat -- all before kick-off! Here are some of my favorite lighter football snacks so you don't end up feeling like a 300-pound lineman by the end of the season. Skinny Dips To contain calories when there's a "blitz" on chips and dip, I opt for dips with more filling fiber and fewer calories ...

Survey reveals consumers' pecan preferences
(American Society for Horticultural Science) A survey explored demographics of pecan consumers, determined their knowledge of tree nut nutrition knowledge and examined preferences in pecan purchases. Almost three-quarters of survey respondents said they consumed pecans, although respondents' knowledge of general and tree nut nutrition concepts varied. The responses showed that people most frequently purchase pecans from a grocery store, buy them shelled for baking/cooking, and consume pecans four to six times per year. How to donate blood for newbies and needle-haters
Background: I’ve been working at the American Red Cross for nine months and 15 days, and during those nine months and 15 days, I’ve adamantly told myself I’m going to give blood. Yet I haven’t because I, like so many others, prefer not to be poked in the arm with a needle. This serious, full-blown, irrational, paranoid fear of needles is exemplified in the two experiences with shots below. 1. The immunization shot. This shot was no big deal, I barely felt a pinch. Afterwards, while my mom was chatting with the nurse, I was trying to get her attention. She kept consistently nudging me away thinking I was trying to i...
