Where science meets fiction: the dark history of eugenics
The scientist and author Dr Adam Rutherford looks at how the study of genetics has been warped for political endsIt ’s a quirk of history that the foundations of modern biology – and as a consequence, some of the worst atrocities of the 20th century – should rely so heavily on peas. Cast your mind back to school biology, and Gregor Mendel, whose 200th birthday we mark next month. Though Mendel is invariably described as a friar, his formidable legacy is not in Augustinian theology, but in the mainstream science of genetics. In the middle of the 19th century, Mendel (whose real name was Johann – Gregor was his August...

Photorhabdus Virulence Cassette as a causative agent in Photorhabdus asymbiotica
(Science China Press) PVC effectors Pdp1 (a new family of widespread dNTP pyrophosphatase effector in eCIS) and Pnf (a deamidase effector) are loaded inside the inner tube lumen in a " Peas in the Pod " mode. Moreover, Pdp1 and Pnf can be directly injected into J774A.1 murine macrophage and kill target cells by disrupting dNTP pools and actin cytoskeleton formation, respectively. The results provide direct evidence of how PVC cargoes are loaded and delivered directly into mammalian macrophages. (Source: EurekAlert! - Biology)

Bee-impersonating flies show pollinator potential

A minty-fresh solution: Using a menthol-like compound to activate plant immune mechanisms
(Tokyo University of Science) Certain chemicals can activate the innate defense mechanisms of plants, and researchers at the Tokyo University of Science are working on ways to use such chemicals as alternatives to harmful agricultural pesticides. These researchers have found that a compound derived from menthol can boost the expression of defense-related genes in soybeans, corn, peas, and other crop species. This finding may pave the way to green agricultural technologies that shield crops from pests while minimizing damage to the environment. (Source: EurekAlert! - Biology)

Legumes research gets flexitarian pulses racing with farming guidance
Plant more bean-like crops in Europe and consider ‘healthy diet transition’ to beat climate crisis, say scientistsAdding the likes of peas, lentils, beans, and chickpeas to your diet, and farming more of them, could result in more nutritious and effective food production with large environmental benefits, scientists have found.Researchers calculated a “nutritional density” unit for different types of crops. They found that swapping cereals for leguminous plants in European crop rotations provided more nutrient-rich produce for both animal and human consumption. Thanks to the way that legumes grow, it also reduced s...

Crop rotations with beans and peas offer more sustainable and nutritious food production
(Frontiers) Adding more legumes, such as beans, peas and lentils, to European crop rotations could provide nutritional and environmental benefits, shows a recent study. The authors use a first-of-its-kind approach to show that the increased cultivation of legumes would deliver higher nutritional value at lower environmental and resource costs. This provides additional evidence for strategies to meet the European Union's urgent environmental targets. (Source: EurekAlert! - Biology)
