Mason’s story: A newborn with a peach-sized tumor
When Tara Johnson found out— after 10 years of trying to get pregnant—she was carrying boy-girl twins, she was thrilled. “It was so exciting, it felt like a double blessing,” she remembers. The pregnancy progressed normally until her 21-week checkup when everything changed. Doctors found a large growth on the neck of her unborn son. Tara’s care was transferred to Brigham and Women’s Hospital, and doctors from Endocrinology and Otolaryngology at Boston Children’s Hospital formed a team to manage her son’s care. When she was 31 weeks pregnant, Tara and husband Bruce were in Boston to meet with Boston Children...

Jimmy Carter Faithfully Teaches Sunday School Before Cancer Treatment
ATLANTA (AP) — Jimmy Carter always goes home to Plains, Georgia. The tiny town he calls a ‘‘haven’’ was there when he got out of the Navy, when he left the governor’s office and when he lost the 1980 presidential election. So after telling the world that melanoma that had spread would force him to ‘‘dramatically’’ reduce his humanitarian work, the Nobel Peace Prize winner had only one place to go. // (function(){var h=this,aa=function(a){var c=typeof a;if("object"==c)if(a){if(a instanceof Array)return"array";if(a instanceof Object)return c;...

Shaping Taste: Instinctual Intelligence
I love to eat and cook. When I was young I loved reading cook books. Once I began studying chemistry I realized that cooking was actually chemistry in action. And I have always been obsessed by our senses and all the doorways they can open into pleasure, our mind, consciousness, and imagination. Today's blog will focus on the sense of taste. Our Five Physical Senses Our senses communicate information through different energetic channels that obviously evolved to support our survival. The smell of something burning in the kitchen gets us there quickly to deal with the potential danger. The sound from down the block from an...

Management strategies to reduce catfacing in peaches
Researchers studied six under-tree vegetation-free strip widths and supplemental irrigation in years 4-8 of a young peach orchard to determine effects on peach tree growth and fruit yield, harvest maturity, and fruit size. Immature fruit samples were collected during thinning in years 4-6 to determine the effect of treatments on the incidence of hemipteran insect damage (catfacing). Results demonstrated that increasing vegetation-free strip width under trees had beneficial results for peach trees and fruit. (Source: ScienceDaily Headlines)

This Man Popping Out Of A Giant Water Balloon Is Our Collective Summer Dream
"Like a weird genie!" If you watch one video of a man getting inside of a giant water balloon today, make it this one.  The Slow Mo Guys are back with another giant water balloon video, but this time, one of them gets inside and they fill it until it can't be filled anymore. It's like if Franz Kafka wrote James and the Giant Peach.    Also on HuffPost:   -- This feed and its contents are the property of The Huffington Post, and use is subject to our terms. Teen With Cancer Uses Make-A-Wish To Share Story Of Sexual Abuse
Considering the pain Lena Strickling has endured throughout her life, it would be understandable if she used her one Make-A-Wish to lounge on a remote, sandy beach far, far away. But Strickling, who has Hodgkin’s lymphoma and was sexually abused by her father, isn’t one for idling. Instead, the 18-year-old decided to use the opportunity to help empower young people who have undergone similar traumas. Strickling asked Make-A-Wish, a nonprofit that grants free experiences to children diagnosed with life-threatening diseases, to fund a video that would allow her to tell her story. She also inv...

Fresh From Farms to Schools -- It Just Makes Sense
As the person in charge of ordering food for the Dallas school system, Dora Rivas certainly knew that the fruits and vegetables provided to her students came from farms. She just didn't know which farms. Or, more specifically, where those farms were located. Near Dallas? In Texas, even? Those questions came up almost three years ago when her team applied for a federal Farm to School grant to help pay for locally-grown produce to be delivered to schools. What's happened since has changed everything from the way kids are learning to what they are eating. Educators have happily learned some lessons, too. The result is ...

Scientists Emerge From 'Martian' Dome On Hawaiian Volcano
HONOLULU (AP) -- Six scientists who were living under a dome on the slopes of a dormant Hawaii volcano for eight months to simulate life on Mars have emerged from isolation. The crew stepped outside the dome that's 8,000 feet up the slopes of Mauna Loa to feel fresh air on their skin Saturday. It was the first time they left without donning a spacesuit. The scientists are part of a human performance study funded by NASA that tracked how they worked together as a team. They have been monitored by surveillance cameras, body-movement trackers and electronic surveys. Crew member Jocelyn Dunn said it was awesome to feel the ...
