Recurrent stroke in a reproductive age women with patent foramen ovale
Patent foramen ovale (PFO) is a known cause of ischemic stroke in young adults and combined oral contraceptives (COCs) are widely used by women of reproductive age. If young women with PFO are taking COCs, the... (Source: BMC Women's Health)

Relationship between patent foramen ovale anatomical features and residual shunt after patent foramen ovale closure
This study aimed to evaluate the relationship between the anatomical features of PFO and residual shunt. The degree of residual shunt and its relationship with the anatomical features of PFO were evaluated in 106 patients who underwent PFO closure at our institution between March 2011 and January 2022 and in whom contrast transthoracic echocardiography was performed 1  year later. The mean PFO tunnel length was 9.3 ± 3.6 mm and the mean PFO height was 3.2 ± 2.2 mm. Atrial septal aneurysm (ASA) was found in 37 patients. After PFO closure, residual shunt was observed in 28 patients (grade 1, n = 8; grade 2, ...

Uncommon cause of acute coronary syndrome  : Paradoxical embolism
We report three cases who presented ST-elevation MI (STEMI) due to paradoxical embolism with high risk PFO that can justify embolic infarction. The aim of this article is to define the high risk PFO, to establish causal link between PFO and embolic events and to guide therapeutic management.PMID:38262255 | DOI:10.1016/j.ancard.2023.101721 (Source: Annales de Cardiologie et d'Angeiologie)

Embolic stroke of undetermined source: Focusing on atrial cardiopathy and patent foramen ovale
Atrial cardiopathy(AC) and patent foramen ovale (PFO) are two etiologies of embolic strokes of undetermined source (ESUS). We aimed to explore the relationship between them in ESUS. (Source: International Journal of Cardiology)

Decrease in lipid metabolic indexes in infants with neonatal respiratory distress syndrome
Exp Ther Med. 2023 Dec 19;27(2):69. doi: 10.3892/etm.2023.12357. eCollection 2024 Feb.ABSTRACTIncomplete pulmonary function and insufficient production of pulmonary surfactant in premature infants may affect alveolar relaxation, inducing neonatal respiratory distress syndrome (NRDS). The present study was a retrospective comparison of lipid metabolism indexes and clinic information between NRDS and non-NRDS infants. Data on general information, pregnancy, clinical symptoms, family history as well as plasma biochemical and lipid metabolic indexes were retrospectively collected and statistically analyzed from 79 patients wit...

Management of patent foramen ovale; findings from a nationwide survey
Several clinical trials have provided evidence supporting the transcatheter closure of patent foramen ovale (PFO) in selected patients following a cryptogenic stroke. However, it remains unknown to what extent these guidelines have been implemented in everyday clinical practice and the familiarity of physicians from different specialties with PFO closure. The aim of our nationwide survey is to explore the implementation of transcatheter PFO occlusion in Greek clinical practice. (Source: Journal of Stroke and Cerebrovascular Diseases)

The association between patent foramen ovale and unexplained syncope in pediatric patients
ConclusionPFO may not increase the risk of syncope in pediatric patients. Further study may include a large and multicenter sample to investigate the association between PFO and unexplained syncope. (Source: Italian Journal of Pediatrics)

The association between patent foramen ovale and unexplained syncope in pediatric patients

Risk factors, clinical implications, and management of peridevice leak following left atrial appendage closure: A systematic review
ConclusionFollowing LAAC, the emergence of a PDL is a significant complication to be aware of. Current evidence suggests possible risk factors that are worth assessing in-depth. Additional research is required to assess suitable candidates, timing, and strategies to managing patients with PDL. (Source: Journal of Interventional Cardiac Electrophysiology)
