Risk factors for the development of cryptogenic stroke and the predictive value of right-to-left shunt in patent foramen ovale
CONCLUSIONS: The right-to-left shunt of patent foramen ovale was an independent risk factor for cryptogenic stroke, which was positively correlated with the paradoxical embolic risk score. Its combination with clinical serologic indexes had a high clinical value for predicting cryptogenic stroke.PMID:38375707 | DOI:10.26355/eurrev_202402_35338 (Source: Pharmacological Reviews)

A matching-adjusted indirect comparison of results from REDUCE and RESPECT-two randomized trials on patent foramen ovale closure devices to prevent recurrent cryptogenic stroke
CONCLUSIONS: This MAIC analysis found no statistically significant differences in efficacy and safety outcomes between PFO closure with the HELEX and CARDIOFORM Septal Occluders versus the Amplatzer PFO Occluder, as used in the REDUCE and RESPECT trials.PMID:38373018 | DOI:10.1080/13696998.2024.2320604 (Source: Journal of Medical Economics)

The Current State of Science Surrounding Patent Foramen Ovale
The exploration of patent foramen ovale (PFO) as a pathway for multiple disease states has been one of the more fascinating advances in cardiology over the last 25 years. This compendium of articles describe some of the major issues and clinical states surrounding the study of PFOs. The authors who wrote these articles are some of the leading people in this field. They deserve much credit for helping us understand the sometimes subtle mechanisms associated with PFO. It is our hope that this collection of articles will help educate neurologists and cardiologists who deal with PFO-associated clinical situations, such as stro...

Ignored Role of Paroxysmal Atrial Fibrillation in the Pathophysiology of Cryptogenic Stroke in Patients with Patent Foramen Ovale and Atrial Septal Aneurysm
Curr Cardiol Rev. 2024 Feb 1. doi: 10.2174/011573403X267669240125041203. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTThe association between cryptogenic stroke (CS) and patent foramen ovale (PFO) with or without atrial septal aneurysm (ASA) has been a debate for decades in terms of pathophysiologic processes and clinical courses. This issue has become more interesting and complex, because of the concerns associating the CS with so-called normal variant pathologies of interatrial septum, namely ASA and PFO. While there is an anatomical pathology in the interatrial septum, namely PFO and ASA, the embolic source of stroke is not clearly de...
