Inter- and Intra-rater Reliability of Modified House-Brackmann and Sunnybrook Facial Nerve Grading Systems in Post Parotidectomy Patients
AbstractTo compare inter-rater, intra-rater and inter-system reliability of modified House-Brackmann and Sunnybrook grading systems. The study was conducted in a tertiary care hospital with a single cohort of 20 patients and 3 raters. The patients, eligible to be included for the study, were those over 18  years of age planned for nerve sparing parotidectomy. In the postoperative period, patients were video recorded performing specific movements according to the requirements of modified House-Brackmann and Sunnybrook systems. These recordings were used for the grading once recruitment was completed. The inter-rater, intra...

Assessment of a Limited-Access Parotidectomy Technique's Complications and Scar-Characteristics – A Cohort Study Effect of parotid mass location on benign tumour parotidectomy scar's characteristics and on patient's quality of life – a cohort study
: Parotidectomy is the treatment of choice for benign tumours of the parotid gland, with the modified Blair incision most commonly utilized. This retrospective analysis aimed to determine the incidence of complications, and to assess the relation between the mass and scar characteristics, in patients who had undergone parotidectomy. Pleomorphic adenoma of parotid gland: a case report
This study reports a case of pleomorphic adenoma in the parotid gland. A 67-year-old female presented with 20-year history of painless swelling in the right parotid gland region. Surgical excision of the tumor was performed under general anesthesia. The lesion was excised with a partial parotidectomy and a compressive dressing. Applying Tumescent solution for preserving the facial nerve in parotidectomy
CONCLUSIONS: The application of Tumescent solution for preserving facial nerves in parotidectomy could minimize nerve injury and shorten the length of surgery.PMID:35963669 | DOI:10.1016/j.asjsur.2022.07.155 (Source: Asian Journal of Surgery)

Comparison of various surgical incisions in parotidectomy: A systematic review and network meta-analysis
Conclusion: The traditional MBI is frequently used for large tumor volumes, but the incision satisfaction score is low and postoperative complication control is poor. However, emerging incisions performed well in terms of incision satisfaction scores and control of complications. More randomized controlled trials are needed to compare the different parotidectomy incisions. Patients should be fully informed about the characteristics of each incision to make the most informed decision, along with the physician's advice. (Source: Frontiers in Oncology)

Cystic Salivary Duct Carcinoma Penetrated by Facial Nerve
Arch Plast Surg. 2022 Jul 30;49(4):523-526. doi: 10.1055/s-0042-1751108. eCollection 2022 Jul.ABSTRACTSalivary duct carcinoma is a rare malignant salivary gland tumor that mainly has solid features. When it occurs in the parotid gland, it can invade the facial nerve and cause facial nerve paralysis. However, in our case, the salivary duct carcinoma exhibited cystic features on computed tomographic imaging, and the facial nerve passed through the cyst. Total parotidectomy with level-I to -III dissections was performed and nerve passing through the tumor was sacrificed. The patient received postoperative radiotherapy and was...

Facial Nerve Repair following Acute Nerve Injury
Conclusion Iatrogenic and traumatic facial nerve injuries are common etiologies of acquired facial paralysis. In such cases, immediate repair should be performed. For patients presenting with facial paralysis following previous surgery or trauma, nerve repair should be considered up to at least 6 months of injury. Longstanding paralysis is best treated with standard facial reanimation procedures.PMID:35919546 | PMC:PMC9340172 | DOI:10.1055/s-0042-1751105 (Source: Archives of Plastic Surgery)
