Retinoblastoma with Isolated Parotid Gland Metastasis: A Report of 2 Cases with Review of Literature
AbstractRetinoblastoma, the most common primary intraocular malignant neoplasm in young children, show frequent metastasis to lymph nodes, central nervous system and bones. However, retinoblastoma metastasizing to parotid gland is very rare. We here present 2 cases of isolated parotid gland metastasis in two children with unilateral retinoblastoma.Case 1 was a one-year-old child presenting with left globe lesion which was diagnosed as Retinoblastoma. Post chemotherapy, enucleation was done which on histopathology examination showed retinoblastoma with scleral invasion and anterior chamber seeding. On 3 month follow up, pat...

Feasibility of facial nerve monitoring using adhesive surface electrodes during parotidectomy: a comparative study with needle electrodes
ConclusionsFacial nerve monitoring (FNM) using adhesive surface electrodes is feasible in parotid surgery. Although the mean amplitude value of the surface electrode was relatively lower than that of the needle electrode, the surface electrode is considered a feasible and safe EMG recording device for FNM in parotid surgery. Pathology Mimicking Orofacial Pain
A case of a 64-year-old woman is reported, who developed new-onset pain over a preexisting area of right mandibular fullness. Clinical examination, MRI, and fine-needle aspiration cytology confirmed the diagnosis of a benign parotid gland tumor-pleomorphic adenoma, which was treated by total parotidectomy with complete removal of the tumor. When evaluating a patient with orofacial pain, oral health care providers should be cognizant of all potential differential diagnoses, especially in the setting of red flags such as persistent or enlarging facial swelling/fullness. Parotidectomy and Parapharyngeal Space Dissection: 3D Anatomy
Parotidectomy and surgical access to the parapharyngeal space are common procedures for the head and neck surgeon, and an understanding of the complex anatomic relationships in this region is critical for safe navigation and management of both benign and malignant processes here. With the use of 3-dimension stereoscopic imaging techniques, parotidectomy and parapharyngeal space dissection are herein reviewed with an emphasis on important anatomic structures and their relationships. Pure extracellular mucin-producing (colloid) myoepithelioma of the parotid gland
Pathol Res Pract. 2022 Oct 8;239:154162. doi: 10.1016/j.prp.2022.154162. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTMucinous (secretory) myoepithelioma is a very uncommon variant of myoepithelioma characterized by the presence of intracellular mucin. We herein report the findings of a 51-year-old woman who presented with a mass in the right parotid region, which had been slowly growing over the previous year. Magnetic resonance imaging revealed a rounded mass with lobulated margins in the tail of the right parotid gland that showed heterogeneous uptake in the anterior margin of the mass. A clinical diagnosis of pleomorphic adenoma was ...

Cancers, Vol. 14, Pages 4862: Systematic Review of Parotid Gland Sarcomas: Multi-Variate Analysis of Clinicopathologic Findings, Therapeutic Approaches and Oncological Outcomes That Affect Survival Rate
Marco de Vincentiis The aim of this study was to systematically review the literature of sarcoma of the parotid gland in order to analyze the main factors affecting survival rate. A systematic literature review was performed between January 1990 to November 2021, and 88 patients affected by parotid gland sarcomas were included. The most common histological types were Rhabdomyosarcoma and Synovial Sarcoma. From our review, it emerges that primary sarcomas of the parotid glands are locally aggressive but show low tendency to metastasize to the lymph nodes of the neck and that surgery (i.e., total or radical parotidecto...

Rate of Fat Graft Volume Loss After Parotidectomy
Conclusions: Fat grafts have the potential of 60% volume loss at approximately 1 year. If there is clinical suspicion that patients will require adjuvant radiation or have clinical factors such as a smoking or alcohol-use history, volume requirements may be even greater to maintain adequate parotid volume for aesthetic purposes. Aesthetic Reconstruction of a Facial Defect After Subtotal Resection of the Parotid Gland Using a Superficial Circumflex Iliac Artery Pure Skin Perforator Flap
Abstract: In the reconstruction of facial defects, thin and flexible coverage of the defect is desirable for cosmetic reasons. A free flap is 1 possible surgical option; however, a flap containing a fatty layer is bulky. in this study, the authors describe the reconstruction of a facial defect after subtotal parotidectomy for right parotid carcinoma using a superficial circumflex iliac artery pure skin perforator flap, with consideration given to facial contour. The superficial circumflex iliac artery pure skin perforator flap is a viable option to achieve the desired clinical and aesthetic outcome. (Source: Journal of...

Results of 301 Parotidectomies: A Twenty-Year Experience of One Single Institution
AbstractTo evaluate demographic, clinical, surgical and histopathological results and complications of 301 parotidectomies performed in southern part of Turkey. The results of 297 patients undergoing 301 parotidectomies between 2000 and 2019 were retrospectively reviewed. Four patients underwent bilateral parotidectomy. Age, gender, side and size of lesion, postoperative facial nerve function (FNF) for benign tumors and types of surgery were evaluated. There were 172 male and 125 female patients. The mean age was 52.53  ± 16.67 years (range 11–90 years). Patients with malignant tumor had higher mean age than the p...

High-grade transformation of adenoid cystic carcinoma of parotid gland with isolated intratemporal facial nerve involvement: a case report and literature review
CONCLUSION: The radiological features of isolated perineural spread in intratympanic part of facial nerve can be easily missed if not specifically looked for. Every attempt should be made preoperatively and intraoperatively to determine the complete extent of the tumor for adequate disease clearance. A combined clinico-radiological approach aided by histopathology examination helps in early detection of this carcinoma and in better patient management.PMID:36117195 | DOI:10.1186/s43046-022-00144-1 (Source: J Egypt Natl Canc In...)
