Parkinson ’s disease and autonomic instability
Recently I had two case (both happened to be long ortho cases) where the patients had severe Parkinson’s dz and they were extremely labile during the case. I figured it was autonomic dysfunction related to their Parkinson’s; anyone have any experience with this? (Source: Student Doctor Network)

RFA in a patient with a DBS
Question for the hive: I have a patient I considered doing lumbar MBB RFA on but he has a DBS for parkinson's disease. I reached out to medtronic to see if the device needs to be turned off prior to RFA. Turns out that the safety has not been established for RFA in patients with a DBS due to the electrical currents potentially causing heating of the electrodes and possible tissue damage. I have performed RFA in patients with pacemakers and I believe SCS in the past. I'm assuming this is out... Read more (Source: Student Doctor Network)

Lack of Shadowing Hours on Application
I am a John Carroll Grad. Cell and Molecular Biology major with a 3.73 GPA. GRE: 155 Quant 154 Verb, 4.5 Writing. 500 hours of Parkinson's Disease research in a gap year so far. I only have 60 shadowing hours, 40 outpatient and 20 inpatient, but I switched from an early acceptance in DO school to pre-pt at the end of my senior year. I explained this in my personal statement. Is anybody in a similar situation? Will schools overlook shadowing hours if everything else is strong? I am currently... Read more (Source: Student Doctor Network)

PGY-2 Fellowship Decision - Movement vs Others?
Hi all, I'm finishing up my PGY-2 year right now and as such am starting to seriously consider different fellowships. At this point I'm starting to lean towards Movement Disorders, but have some reservations about. My top priority is lifestyle at this point as I have small kids and want to be around to see them grow up. Money would be nice but is a distant second priority. Movement Pros: Ataxia is probably the most interesting group of disorders to me and Parkinson's/Parkinson's plus are... Read more (Source: Student Doctor Network)

Parenteral amino acid and serotonin syndrome
My hospital system has a high alert flag for parenteral AA's + serotonergic drugs, but I'm having a hard time finding any literature to substantiate it. Best I could find was a study protocol for an experimental amino acid that excluded patients on an SSRI. Was able to find a case report of NMS from parenteral AA's in a patient with Parkinsons which maybe offers some biological plausibility. Just wondering if this is a real thing or not (Source: Student Doctor Network)

What turned you away from other subspecialties? Why did you choose your subspecialty?
There are lots of information about the different subspecialties regarding training, procedures etc. But I'm looking for insights, experiences, or opinions about what it actually feels like to work in each area particularly Neuromuscular, Movement, Headache, MS, Stroke... For example, in my limited experience, Movement Disorders programs talk about the variety of pathologies, DBS and Botox. But outside of academia, out in the community you're mostly seeing Parkinson's, you need a... Read more (Source: Student Doctor Network)

Would conductive education be considered clinical volunteering?
Hi everyone, super simple question. I'm working as a volunteer at a conductive education program that helps both teach (as in a classroom setting) and physically help babies to senior individuals who are diagnosed with Cerebral Palsy, Spina Bifida, Parkinson's, and other neurological motor disabilities. I also do help with taking students to the bathroom, learning more about motor disabilities, and assisting them with physical activities. Conductive education isn't a fairly common thing in...
